HP Printer error codes explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HP printer error codes can appear on a printer’s display panel, in the HP Smart app, on a computer screen, or as blinking lights with no clear message. Some codes point to simple issues such as low ink, an open door, or a paper jam, while others can indicate cartridge recognition problems, printhead failures, network conflicts, firmware glitches, or hardware faults.

Because HP inkjet and LaserJet models report problems differently, the same symptom can look like a numeric code, a short message, or a software alert depending on the device. Understanding what the most common errors usually mean helps you avoid unnecessary parts replacement, protect the printer from damage, and decide whether a safe reset, cleaning step, driver update, or support request is the right next move.

How HP Printer Error Codes Work

HP printer error codes are shorthand messages that point to a condition the printer or its software has detected. The code may appear on the printer’s control panel, in the HP Smart app, in Windows or macOS print queues, or on an embedded web page for networked models. Some messages are plain-language alerts such as Paper Jam, Cartridge Problem, or Printer Offline, while others use numeric or alphanumeric formats such as 0x6100004a, 49 Service Error, or 79 Service Error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same code does not always identify a single failed part. In many cases, it identifies the stage where the printer stopped working. For example, a carriage error on an inkjet may be caused by a stuck printhead carriage, a torn scrap of paper, an improperly seated ink cartridge, or a sensor reading that did not update correctly. A LaserJet fuser-related message may indicate a heating problem, but it can also be triggered by unstable power, incorrect paper type settings, or a temporary firmware fault. This is the safest first steps focus on clearing obstructions, reseating consumables, restarting the device, and checking software status before replacing parts.

Where error codes usually appear

  • Printer display panel: Common on OfficeJet Pro, ENVY, Smart Tank, LaserJet Pro, and enterprise LaserJet models. These messages are usually closest to the hardware condition.
  • HP Smart app: Often shows setup, cartridge, network, firmware, and account-related messages, especially for wireless inkjet and Smart Tank printers.
  • Computer print queue: Windows and macOS may show “offline,” “paused,” “driver unavailable,” or “attention required,” even when the printer itself has a different panel message.
  • Embedded Web Server: Networked printers can display status, supply levels, event logs, and firmware information through the printer’s IP address in a browser.

HP uses different error styles across product families. Inkjet models often report cartridge, printhead, carriage, ink system, or alignment issues. LaserJet models more commonly report paper path, toner, fuser, formatter, memory, and firmware service errors. Entry-level printers may use blinking lights instead of a text display, so the pattern of lights becomes the error code. In those cases, the model’s support page or user guide is usually needed to match the light sequence to the fault condition.

Code or message type Typical area involved Safe first response
Paper jam or carriage jam Paper path, rollers, carriage movement Remove paper carefully, inspect trays and access doors, restart the printer
Cartridge, toner, or printhead problem Consumables, contacts, print system Reseat supplies, check protective tape, clean contacts only as directed
Offline or connection error Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, driver, print queue Check network status, restart router and printer, verify the selected printer
49, 79, or firmware-related service error Firmware, print job processing, accessories Power cycle, clear the print queue, update firmware if the printer becomes ready

When reading an HP error code, record the exact wording, numbers, and when it appears: during startup, while printing, after a cartridge change, after a firmware update, or only from one computer. Also the printer model and connection type. Those details help separate a hardware condition from a driver, network, or app issue, and they make later support steps faster if basic troubleshooting does not clear the message.

Common HP Inkjet Error Codes and Meanings

HP inkjet printers, including DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet, and Smart Tank models, may show error codes on the printer display, in the HP Smart app, or in the Windows/macOS print queue. The exact wording varies by model, but most inkjet errors point to a small group of problems: cartridge detection, printhead health, paper movement, carriage movement, firmware status, or wireless communication. Before replacing parts, check the simple causes first, especially recently changed cartridges, loose packaging material, jammed paper scraps, or an interrupted update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Error code or message Typical meaning Safest first steps
E0 Cartridge problem, unsupported cartridge, or cartridge not seated correctly. Open the cartridge access door, remove and reinstall the cartridges, confirm they are the correct type for the printer, and clean only the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth if needed.
E1 or E2 Paper size mismatch or paper length mismatch between the printer settings and loaded paper. Check the paper guides, confirm the loaded size, then match the paper size in the print dialog, HP Smart app, or printer control panel.
E3 Carriage jam or the ink carriage cannot move freely. Turn the printer off, disconnect power, look for torn paper or packing material inside the carriage path, then gently slide the carriage only if it moves without force.
E4 Paper jam or feed path obstruction. Remove paper from the input tray, inspect the rear access area and output path, pull jammed sheets slowly with both hands, and reload flat, undamaged paper.
E5 Scanner failure on many all-in-one inkjet models. Restart the printer, make sure the scanner lid moves freely, and test a copy from the printer panel to separate scanner issues from computer software issues.
E6 General printer error, often after a stalled job, power interruption, or internal state fault. Cancel pending jobs, restart the printer, unplug it from the wall for about 60 seconds, then reconnect directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge strip.

Cartridge and ink-system messages are especially common on HP inkjets. Messages such as “Cartridge Problem,” “Incompatible Cartridge,” “Protected Cartridge,” “Depleted Cartridge,” or “Ink Cartridge Failure” usually mean the printer cannot validate or use one of the cartridges. This may happen after installing the wrong regional cartridge, using a cartridge locked to another printer, touching the electrical contacts, or leaving protective tape on a new cartridge. For HP Instant Ink users, subscription status and printer connectivity can also affect whether enrolled cartridges are accepted.

Printhead-related errors usually appear as messages rather than short codes. “Printhead Problem,” “Missing or Failed Printhead,” “Printhead Appears to Be Missing,” and “Ink System Failure” often indicate clogged nozzles, poor electrical contact, air in the ink system, or a printhead that has failed. On cartridge-based DeskJet and ENVY models, the printhead may be built into the cartridge, so replacing the affected cartridge can resolve the fault. On OfficeJet Pro and Smart Tank models with a separate or semi-permanent printhead, use the printer’s built-in printhead cleaning routine first and avoid manually flushing the printhead unless HP documentation for that model specifically allows it.

Some HP inkjet errors are shown only in software. “Printer Offline,” “Driver Unavailable,” “Attention Required,” “Printer in Error State,” and “Unable to Communicate with Printer” do not always mean the printer hardware has failed. They often point to a paused print queue, a changed Wi-Fi network, duplicate printer entries, an outdated driver, or a blocked connection between HP Smart and the device. In those cases, print a network configuration page if the model supports it, confirm the printer and computer are on the same network, remove duplicate printer icons, and update the HP Smart app or full HP driver package before assuming the error is mechanical.

Common HP LaserJet Error Codes and Meanings

HP LaserJet printers often report faults as numeric codes on the control panel, in the HP Smart app, in Windows or macOS print queues, or through the printer’s Embedded Web Server. These codes are common on single-function LaserJets, LaserJet Pro models, and larger Enterprise devices, although the exact wording can vary by model. Most LaserJet errors point to one of four areas: paper movement, toner and imaging supplies, memory or formatter issues, and network or firmware communication.

Frequently seen LaserJet display-panel codes

Error code or message Typical meaning Safe first steps
13.xx Paper Jam Paper is stuck in the input tray, output path, duplexer, fuser area, or rear door. Power the printer off, open the indicated doors, remove paper slowly with both hands, check for torn scraps, then reload undamaged paper.
10.xx Supply Memory Error The printer cannot read the toner cartridge chip or supply information. Remove and reinstall the toner cartridge, check for protective tape or packaging, clean visible contacts gently, and confirm the cartridge is compatible with the exact model.
49 Error or 49.xxxx Error A firmware, print job, driver, or network command caused the printer to stop processing. Cancel the current job, restart the printer, disconnect network or USB temporarily, then update firmware and drivers before resending the file.
50.x Fuser Error The fuser is not heating correctly, is overheating, or has a power-related fault. Turn the printer off for several minutes, plug it directly into a wall outlet, and restart. Avoid repeated attempts if the code returns.
51.x or 52.x Error The laser scanner assembly or internal imaging system is not operating as expected. Restart the printer once, remove surge strips if present, and contact service if the message reappears.
79 Service Error A firmware crash, accessory conflict, corrupted job, or network print issue has occurred. Power cycle the printer, clear queued jobs from all computers, disconnect accessories if fitted, and install the latest firmware.

13.xx jam codes are among the most common LaserJet alerts. The digits after 13 may identify a more specific area, such as tray pickup, registration, duplexing, or the fuser exit path. Even when the printer says the jam is cleared, a small torn piece of paper, curled label, or overloaded tray can make the code return. Use only paper sizes and weights supported by the tray, fan the stack before loading, and set the tray guides so they touch the paper without bending it.

10.xx supply errors usually involve toner cartridges rather than ink tanks or printheads. LaserJet cartridges often include a memory chip that reports toner level and cartridge identity. If the printer displays “Supply Memory Error,” “Incompatible Cartridge,” or “Cartridge Problem,” reseat the cartridge first. Do not force the cartridge into place, touch the imaging drum, or scrape contacts with sharp tools. If the error started immediately after replacing toner, compare the cartridge part number with the printer’s supported cartridge list.

49 and 79 errors are often linked to software rather than a broken mechanical part. A complex PDF, damaged spreadsheet, outdated PCL or PostScript driver, or interrupted network print job can trigger the fault. Clear the print queue on every connected device, restart the printer, and try printing a simple internal report from the control panel. If the internal report prints but the document fails again, save the file as a new PDF, print fewer pages at a time, or switch between the HP PCL 6, Universal Print Driver, AirPrint, or PostScript driver where supported.

50.x, 51.x, and 52.x errors deserve more caution because they can involve internal hardware such as the fuser or laser scanner. A fuser becomes extremely hot during normal operation, so users should not disassemble that area beyond opening customer-access doors and removing accessible paper. If a power reset and a direct wall connection do not clear the message, continued use may risk further damage. At that point, record the full code, printer model, firmware version if available, and recent changes such as new toner, a firmware update, or a paper jam before contacting HP or an authorized service provider.

Paper Jam, Cartridge, and Printhead Errors

Paper jam, cartridge, and printhead errors are among the most common HP printer problems because they involve the parts users handle most often. These messages may appear on the printer display, in the HP Smart app, in Windows or macOS print queues, or as blinking lights on models without a screen. The exact wording varies by model, but messages such as Paper Jam, Carriage Jam, Cartridge Problem, Incompatible Cartridge, Printhead Missing, or Printhead Failure usually point to a physical obstruction, an installation issue, or a component that cannot be detected correctly.

A paper jam error does not always mean a full sheet is visibly stuck. Small torn scraps, curled paper, overloaded trays, damaged rollers, or paper loaded too tightly can trigger the sensor. On HP inkjet printers, a related carriage jam message means the cartridge carriage cannot move freely across the rail. On LaserJet models, jam codes and messages often identify the area affected, such as the input tray, duplexer, rear door, fuser area, or output bin. Always turn the printer off and unplug it before reaching into the paper path, and avoid pulling paper against the normal feed direction unless the model’s instructions specifically say to do so.

Safe checks for jam and feed errors

  • Remove loose paper from the input and output trays, then reload a smaller, neatly aligned stack.
  • Open the access doors and gently remove stuck sheets using both hands to prevent tearing.
  • Check the rear access door, duplexer, automatic document feeder, and output area for scraps.
  • Inspect rollers for dust, labels, adhesive residue, or worn spots that can cause repeated jams.
  • Make sure the paper type and size selected in the print settings match the paper in the tray.

Cartridge errors usually relate to ink or toner supplies not being recognized, not seated correctly, protected for another printer, empty, damaged, or incompatible with the region or model. Inkjet messages such as Cartridge Problem, Remove and Reinstall Cartridge, or Ink Cartridge Failure are often caused by protective tape left on a new cartridge, dirty copper contacts, or a cartridge that clicked in unevenly. LaserJet toner messages may mention Supply Memory Error, Install Black Cartridge, or Unauthorized Cartridge, which can occur when the toner chip is not readable, the cartridge is not fully seated, or the printer’s firmware rejects a non-HP or incompatible supply.

Printhead errors affect many HP inkjet and OfficeJet models, especially printers with separate ink tanks or removable printhead assemblies. A Printhead Missing, Printhead Problem, or Printhead Failure message means the printer cannot communicate with the printhead or detects poor electrical contact, clogging, overheating, or internal failure. Start with the least invasive steps: power the printer off, reseat the cartridges or printhead if the model allows it, and clean only the visible electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Do not touch ink nozzles, use alcohol on sensitive parts unless HP documentation allows it, or force a printhead latch that does not move easily.

Common message patterns

Error message Typical meaning Safest first action
Paper Jam or Jam in Tray Paper, scraps, or a feed sensor obstruction Remove paper carefully and inspect the full paper path
Carriage Jam Ink cartridge carriage cannot move freely Check for obstructions around the carriage rail
Cartridge Problem Ink cartridge not detected or not seated correctly Remove, inspect, and reinstall the cartridge
Supply Memory Error LaserJet toner chip cannot be read Reseat the toner and confirm model compatibility
Printhead Failure Printhead communication or hardware fault Power cycle, reseat if removable, then run HP diagnostics

Network, Driver, and Firmware-Related Errors

Some HP printer errors do not come from a mechanical fault inside the printer. They appear when the printer cannot communicate reliably with a computer, phone, router, print server, or HP software service. These errors may show on the printer control panel, in the HP Smart app, in Windows or macOS print queues, or inside a browser-based embedded web server page. Common messages include Printer Offline, Driver Unavailable, Unable to Communicate with Printer, Connection Error, Update Failed, and Supply System Problem after a firmware change.

Network and wireless connection errors

Network-related errors are especially common on Wi-Fi inkjet and LaserJet models. A printer may be connected to the wrong wireless network, lose its IP address after a router restart, or fail when the signal is weak. Dual-band routers can also cause confusion if the printer supports only 2.4 GHz while the computer or phone is on a 5 GHz network with client isolation enabled. On many HP models, blinking wireless lights, an Offline status, or messages such as Cannot Connect to Server point to this type of issue rather than a broken printer.

  • Printer Offline: The computer cannot reach the printer over USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or the selected print port.
  • Unable to Communicate with Printer: HP Smart, HP Easy Start, or the operating system cannot complete a status check or send a job.
  • Cannot Connect to Web Services: The printer cannot reach HP cloud services, often because of DNS, router, proxy, or date-and-time problems.
  • IP Address Conflict: Another device may be using the same address, or the router has reassigned the printer after a restart.

Driver and print queue messages

Driver errors usually appear on the computer rather than on the printer display. In Windows, Driver Unavailable, Error Printing, or a stuck job in the print queue may mean the installed driver does not match the model, the print spooler has stalled, or Windows has switched to a generic class driver. On macOS, messages such as Filter Failed or repeated prompts to add the printer again can point to an outdated driver package, an AirPrint mismatch, or a damaged printer entry. Before reinstalling everything, cancel stuck jobs, restart the printer and computer, and confirm that the selected printer is the correct one, not an older copy with a similar name.

Firmware update and web services errors

Firmware-related errors can occur during or after an update. A failed update may leave the printer restarting repeatedly, displaying Update Failed, or refusing certain features until it reconnects to HP services. Some LaserJet models may show service-style codes after firmware issues, while inkjet models may report cartridge, supply, or web services problems if the update affected communication with supplies or cloud features. During a firmware update, keep the printer powered on, avoid unplugging network cables, and do not restart the router unless the update has clearly stopped for an extended period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Error or message Typical meaning Safe first step
Printer Offline The computer cannot reach the printer on the selected connection. Restart the printer, confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, and select the correct printer queue.
Driver Unavailable The installed driver is missing, outdated, or incompatible. Install the current HP driver or use HP Smart, HP Easy Start, or AirPrint where supported.
Cannot Connect to Server The printer cannot reach HP Web Services or cloud features. Check internet access, router settings, DNS, and the printer date and time.
Update Failed A firmware update did not complete correctly. Power-cycle only after waiting, then retry from the printer menu, HP Smart, or HP support site.

If these errors continue, print a Network Configuration Page or Wireless Test Report from the printer menu. The report can confirm the current IP address, signal strength, connection status, and any gateway or DNS failures. For USB printers, try a direct cable connection without a hub and use a known-good cable. For network printers, removing duplicate printer entries and adding the printer again by its current IP address often resolves persistent driver and offline messages without changing hardware.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Checklist

When an HP printer shows an error code on the control panel, in HP Smart, or on your computer, start with the least disruptive checks first. Many inkjet and LaserJet errors are caused by temporary communication failures, paper feed problems, cartridge seating issues, or jobs stuck in the print queue. Work through the steps in order and test the printer after each one so you know what actually resolved the issue.

HP DeskJet 4355 Color Inkjet Printer | Wireless | All-in-One
  • AFFORDABLE COLOR PRINTING – Print everyday color documents like to-do lists, letters, financial documents and recipes
  • KEY FEATURES – Color print, copy, scan, a 35-sheet auto document feeder and a 60-sheet input tray, plus mobile and wireless printing
  • OPTIMIZE PRINT FORMATTING WITH HP AI – Print web pages and emails with precision—no wasted pages or awkward layouts; HP AI easily removes unwanted content, so your prints are just the way you want
  • ICON LCD – Print your basic documents with ease from the intuitive control panel
  • PRINT SPEED – Up to 8.5 ppm black, 5.5 ppm color
  1. Record the exact error message or code. Write down the full code, including any letters, numbers, and punctuation. For example, a “0x” inkjet error, a “49” LaserJet service error, and a “Cartridge Problem” message point to different causes. Also note whether the message appears on the printer display, in HP Smart, in Windows or macOS, or only when printing from one app.
  2. Check the printer’s basic status. Make sure the printer is powered on, not in sleep mode, and connected directly to a working wall outlet if possible. Confirm that all doors, trays, duplexers, and access panels are fully closed. On LaserJet models, reseat the toner cartridge and paper tray; on inkjet models, check that the cartridge access door and printhead latch are secure.
  3. Clear paper path problems carefully. Remove loose paper from the input and output trays, then follow the printer’s jam-clearing path shown on the display or in the manual. Pull jammed sheets slowly in the direction of the paper path to avoid tearing. Look for small scraps around rollers, the rear door, the duplexer, and under the carriage area on inkjet models.
  4. Inspect cartridges, toner, and printheads. Remove and reinstall ink or toner cartridges one at a time. Check for protective tape left on new supplies, damaged chips, leaking toner, or dried ink around the contacts. If your inkjet has a removable printhead, reseat it only if the model’s instructions allow it, and avoid touching nozzles or copper contacts with your fingers.
  5. Restart the printer and the sending device. Turn the printer off, wait at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Restart the computer, phone, or tablet that is sending the job. This can clear temporary panel codes, stalled jobs, and app-to-printer communication errors without changing printer settings.
  6. Check the print queue. Cancel stuck or duplicate jobs in Windows, macOS, HP Smart, or the mobile print dialog. A corrupted job can repeatedly trigger errors such as “Printer Offline,” “Filter Failed,” or a LaserJet processing error. After clearing the queue, send a simple one-page test document rather than a large PDF or image-heavy file.
  7. Verify the connection. For USB printers, try a different port and avoid unpowered hubs. For Wi-Fi models, confirm the printer and device are on the same network, not a guest network. Print a network configuration page if available and compare the printer’s IP address with the one used by the driver or HP Smart app.
  8. Update software and firmware. Install current HP drivers, HP Smart updates, and printer firmware from trusted HP sources. Firmware updates can fix known error loops, cartridge recognition issues, and network reliability problems. Keep the printer powered on during the update and do not interrupt it once it begins.

If the error appears only during a specific task, narrow the test. Try copying from the scanner glass to separate printer hardware issues from computer or network problems. If copying works but printing fails, focus on the driver, queue, cable, Wi-Fi, or application. If copying also fails, the issue is more likely related to paper feed, cartridges, toner, printhead, scanner hardware, or an internal printer fault.

Symptom Safest first action
Paper jam or “Clear Jam” message Power off, remove paper gently, check rollers and scraps
Cartridge or toner not recognized Reseat the supply, check contacts, confirm it matches the model
Printer offline or unavailable Restart devices, verify network, check the selected printer
Error after firmware or driver change Restart, reinstall the driver, then check for a newer update

Avoid forcing parts, disassembling covers not meant for user access, or repeatedly power-cycling the printer during firmware updates. If the same code returns after these checks, keep your s, test pages, supply details, connection type, and recent changes ready before contacting HP support or an authorized service provider.

When to Reset the Printer or Contact HP Support

A reset can clear temporary memory faults, stalled print jobs, wireless handshakes, and firmware glitches, but it should be used carefully. Start with the least disruptive option: turn the printer off with the power button, wait until it fully shuts down, unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet, wait 60 seconds, then reconnect it directly to a wall outlet. This basic power reset is safe for most HP inkjet and LaserJet models and will not normally erase network settings or stored preferences.

Use a stronger reset only after basic checks have failed. If the printer keeps showing the same display-panel code after you have removed jammed paper, reseated cartridges or toner, checked doors and trays, restarted the computer, and updated the HP Smart app or print driver, a reset may help. For network-related errors, try restarting the router and printer first, then reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi from the control panel or HP Smart. Avoid repeated resets in quick succession, especially during updates, calibration, cartridge alignment, or while the printer says it is cleaning, initializing, or processing.

When a reset is appropriate

  • The printer is frozen or unresponsive: The display panel does not react, buttons do nothing, or the printer remains stuck on “Printing,” “Processing,” or “Canceling.”
  • Software shows the printer offline: HP Smart, Windows, macOS, or a mobile device cannot communicate with the printer even though the printer is powered on and connected.
  • A temporary error returns after restart: General service messages, communication errors, or app status mismatches continue after clearing the print queue.
  • Network settings are confused: The printer was moved to a new router, changed Wi-Fi bands, or keeps connecting to an old network.

Contact HP Support instead of continuing to troubleshoot if the printer shows a hardware service code repeatedly, makes grinding or clicking noises, smells hot, leaks ink or toner, or trips power when plugged in. You should also stop if paper tears deep inside the printer, a cartridge carriage will not move freely, a printhead error remains after using genuine or known-good supplies, or a LaserJet fuser, scanner, or fan error returns after a power reset. These symptoms can involve internal parts that are not safe or practical for most users to repair.

Information to collect before contacting support

  • The exact error code or message shown on the printer display, HP Smart app, computer, or mobile device.
  • The printer model name and product number, usually found on the front label, rear label, or inside the cartridge access area.
  • The connection type: USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or shared network printer.
  • The computer or mobile operating system and whether the issue happens from one device or all devices.
  • Recent changes, such as a new router, firmware update, paper change, cartridge replacement, toner replacement, or driver installation.

If the printer is under warranty, using HP Support is often the safest path because service options may include guided diagnostics, replacement parts, or device exchange. Even out of warranty, support can confirm whether a code points to a replaceable supply, a maintenance kit, a firmware issue, or a failed internal component. If repair costs approach the price of a new printer, ask for the estimated part and labor cost before approving service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether an HP printer error code is a hardware problem or a software problem?

If the code appears on the printer’s own display panel and stays after restarting, it often points to a printer-side issue such as a jam, cartridge fault, printhead problem, or internal hardware error. If the message appears only in HP Smart, Windows, macOS, or a print queue, check the connection, driver, firmware, and selected printer first. Testing a copy or printer self-test page can help separate printer hardware issues from computer or app issues.

What should I do first when my HP printer shows a paper jam error but I cannot see any paper?

Turn the printer off, unplug it, and carefully inspect all access doors, input trays, output areas, duplexer, and rear panel if your model has one. Look for small torn scraps, labels, dust buildup, or a slightly misaligned paper stack, because these can trigger jam sensors even when no full sheet is visible. After clearing the path, reload plain paper neatly and restart the printer before trying another print job.

Can I keep printing if my HP printer shows a cartridge or printhead error?

Sometimes you can continue if the message is only a low-ink or low-toner warning, but errors such as “Cartridge Problem,” “Incompatible Cartridge,” “Printhead Missing,” or “Printhead Failure” usually need attention before printing resumes. Remove and reinstall the cartridge, check protective tape, clean the electrical contacts gently with a lint-free cloth, and make sure the cartridge is genuine or supported by your model. If the same printhead error returns after reseating and restarting, avoid repeated forced printing because it may waste ink or worsen print quality.

Do HP firmware updates fix error codes, or can they cause new ones?

Firmware updates can fix known bugs, improve wireless reliability, and resolve some driver or printer communication errors. However, an interrupted update or outdated HP Smart/driver installation can also lead to new messages, offline status, or compatibility problems. Use a stable power source and network connection during updates, then restart the printer, router, and computer if errors appear afterward.

When should I reset my HP printer instead of contacting HP support?

Try a basic power reset after you have checked for jams, reseated cartridges, confirmed the network connection, and restarted the print job. Unplug the printer from the wall for about 60 seconds, reconnect it directly to a wall outlet, and turn it back on. Contact HP support if the same service error, printhead failure, fuser error, scanner error, or repeated hardware code returns after safe troubleshooting.

Bottom Line

HP printer error codes usually point to a specific area—paper feed, cartridges or toner, printhead, firmware, network connection, or hardware sensors. Start with the safest fixes first: restart the printer, check paper and supplies, reseat cartridges or toner, clear jams carefully, update firmware and drivers, and verify the connection in the HP app or your computer’s printer settings.

If the same code returns after basic troubleshooting, stop repeated resets or forced printing attempts, especially with cartridge, fuser, formatter, or printhead-related errors. Record the exact code, printer model, and recent changes, then contact HP Support or an authorized technician for model-specific repair guidance.
