On most HP laptops running Windows 10 or 11, disable the touchpad in Windows’ Touchpad settings. You can also configure it to switch off only when a mouse is connected, and some models support a double-tap gesture on the touchpad itself.

Turn the HP touchpad off in Windows

  1. Search Windows for touchpad settings and open the matching Settings result. In Windows 11, the path is Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Switch the Touchpad control off. To use the touchpad again, return to the same setting and switch it on.

These steps follow HP Support’s instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact options can vary by device. HP Notebook PCs – Using the touchpad (Windows 11, 10)

Disable it only while a mouse is connected

If you want the touchpad available when you are away from your mouse, leave the main Touchpad control on and clear Leave the touchpad on when a mouse is connected. HP documents this option for Windows 10 and 11. A mouse is not required to change the setting.

Use the keyboard if the touchpad is already off

You can navigate to the Touchpad control without a working pointer. In Settings, press Tab until the Touchpad button has focus, then press Space to change its state. Use the same keyboard method to turn it back on.

Try the touchpad’s corner gesture

Some HP touchpads toggle on or off when you double-tap the upper-left corner. HP does not describe this as a feature available on every model, so use Windows settings if the gesture does not work. HP’s wording is: “On some touchpads, you can turn the touchpad on or off by double tapping in the upper-left corner of the touchpad.”

If Windows does not show a Touchpad switch

HP recommends installing the latest touchpad driver through Windows Update when Windows does not show an enable/disable option. Settings and gestures can differ by model; consult the user guide for your specific HP computer for its supported controls.
