Whether you can upgrade your HP laptop’s RAM depends on its exact model. Check the installed memory in Windows, then use that laptop’s HP Maintenance and Service Guide or Hardware Reference Guide to confirm upgrade support, compatible memory, capacity limits, and installation steps before buying or opening the computer.
Identify your exact HP laptop
Start with the laptop’s product name, product number, or serial number. Enter it on HP’s RAM verification support page to reach the guidance for identifying supported memory. HP’s support process also offers an option to detect the product.

From the product’s support page, open Setup & User Guides and find the applicable Maintenance and Service Guide or Hardware Reference Guide. HP’s 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd0000 support page is one example of a model-specific guide location; its specifications should not be assumed to apply to other HP laptops.

- Open Task Manager.
- Select Performance, then Memory.
- Note the total memory, memory speed, and number of memory slots in use shown in the right pane.
These details describe the current configuration. They do not, by themselves, establish the laptop’s maximum supported capacity or which replacement modules are compatible.

Confirm whether your model supports a RAM upgrade
In the guide for your exact product, check the supported memory type and speed, maximum memory capacity, and model-specific installation instructions. Compare those specifications with the current total and the number of slots in use that you noted in Task Manager. The guide, not a generic “HP laptop RAM” label, is the basis for deciding whether a particular memory module will work.
- Memory type: Match the type specified for your exact laptop.
- Speed: Check the guide’s supported memory speed.
- Capacity: Confirm both the laptop’s maximum and the amount currently installed.
- Slots: Use Task Manager’s slot count alongside the guide’s configuration details.
- Installation constraints: Follow any model-specific requirements in the guide.
There is no single RAM type, capacity, speed, module size, or preferred configuration that applies to HP laptops as a whole. If the product guide does not clearly resolve a compatibility question, do not guess at a module specification.

- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
Find the correct installation procedure
Use the Maintenance and Service Guide or Hardware Reference Guide for your exact laptop to locate its memory-upgrade procedure. HP laptops differ, so one set of case-opening, battery-disconnection, or module-removal directions cannot safely be treated as universal. Follow the model’s instructions rather than opening the computer based on a procedure for a different HP laptop.
