You need to own it, have permission that covers the stream and any archived replay, or have a defensible copyright exception under the law that applies. Repeating a clip does not create rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a broadcast if matched content remains.
Can you loop nature footage on a YouTube livestream?
Yes, if you have the necessary rights to use every visual and audio element. The fact that a video shows landscapes, wildlife, rain, or other natural scenes does not make it free to use. Nor does looping it, making it ambient, or using only a short segment establish permission or a copyright exception.

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the person providing the stream to have the rights needed to exploit its content worldwide. That can include rights for footage, music, ambient recordings, and sound effects. See YouTube’s Terms of Service and its guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Check rights before going live
- Identify the source of every element. For footage you recorded yourself, keep original files and other records that help establish where it came from. If someone else created it, identify the actual rights owner; a repost or a stock library listing alone does not establish what rights you have.
- Read the license or get written permission. Check that the grant covers livestreaming, the archived replay, monetization, worldwide territories, duration, and edits or looping. Permission for an ordinary upload should not be assumed to cover those uses. What a particular license permits depends on its terms and the rights owner.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. If you have licensed third-party material, ask the owner to add your YouTube channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted; restricting the broadcast to territories where you have rights may not prevent the interruption. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Clear audio separately. A nature clip may include music, a separately recorded soundscape, or sound effects with different owners or license terms. Confirm that the permission covers each element.
- Plan to monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube Studio and the live stream for warnings. If YouTube identifies third-party content, address it promptly; continued presence can result in interruption or termination. If the stream stops, check Studio for any strike and follow the instructions attached to the restriction.
What YouTube may do during and after a live stream
While the broadcast is live
YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content. If the material remains, YouTube says the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a livestream. Details are in Copyright issues with live streams.
#1 Best Overall
If the stream is archived
If you choose to archive the broadcast, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the livestream is complete. That timing does not mean the replay is cleared for use: the archive still contains the footage and audio, and the rights and license terms still matter.
Claim, takedown, and strike are different
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or a copyright strike, and a claim is not automatically proof that you lack permission. Review the identified material against your license and records. Do not treat an automated claim as a legal ruling. YouTube explains the distinctions in its copyright claim guidance.

Does fair use let you loop someone else’s nature video?
Not automatically. In the United States, fair use is assessed case by case using four factors, and courts make the final decision. YouTube says Content ID cannot determine fair use. Other countries may have different exceptions and rules. A nature subject, ambient presentation, short excerpt, or repeated loop is not by itself enough to establish an exception. See YouTube’s fair-use guidance and its copyright tips. If you are relying on an exception or are unsure about a license, seek advice from a qualified copyright professional in the relevant jurisdiction.
Do not confuse live Content ID matching with permission
YouTube’s live-stream-specific Content ID matching feature is for certain eligible partners who meet requirements that include global rights and exclusive ownership. It is intended to identify copies of the partner’s own live content; it is not a way for an ordinary creator to obtain permission to use someone else’s footage. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright information.
