The request may contain more than the text visible in the chat box: it can include conversation history, attachments, instructions, or information used by enabled features. The exact route and data handling depend on the product, account, and capabilities you use.
What happens to your message after you hit send?
From the interface to a service
You enter text in an app or website and may attach a file or image, or turn on a feature that adds context. The product submits a request to its service. That request is processed with relevant settings and context, a model generates a response, and the service returns it to the interface.

This is a broad description of a hosted AI interaction—not a universal network diagram. The documentation discussed here does not establish one browser-to-model route, transport protocol, tokenizer implementation, or serving architecture for every app. Those details vary and should not be inferred from what a chat window displays.
What the service may handle
Provider documentation describes prompts and responses alongside other data, such as metadata derived from content, files or images, and application state. Depending on the product and feature, a request may involve:

- Instructions, settings, or other request fields.
- Content sent to a tool or outside service when that capability is used.
These are possibilities, not fields guaranteed in every request. Without knowing the specific app, account, and enabled features, it is not possible to say exactly what a particular device sent.
Can anyone besides the model provider receive the content?
Potentially. A tool-enabled request may send information to an outside service, whose own retention rules then matter. OpenAI says data transmitted to third-party services through its API is governed by those services’ retention policies. Anthropic says that when its API is used through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Agent Platform, the cloud provider processes the data under its own retention and compliance documentation. The base model provider may therefore not be the only organization involved.

For OpenAI consumer services, OpenAI says content is stored on its systems and trusted service providers’ systems in the United States and around the world; selected portions may also be provided to service providers for data annotation and safety. The company says limited authorized personnel and service providers may access content for specified needs, including abuse or security investigations, support, legal matters, or model improvement when a user has not opted out. Training use and storage duration are separate questions. A provider may not use data to improve models by default while still retaining it for operational, safety, or product reasons. The answer also changes between a consumer chat product, a business workspace, an API, and individual features.

OpenAI consumer services
OpenAI says content from consumer ChatGPT and other services for individuals may be used to improve model performance depending on the user’s settings. It says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, and the API Platform is not used to improve models by default, although organizations can choose to share data where available. Temporary Chats are excluded from model improvement while temporary, but OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. OpenAI consumer data documentation
OpenAI API
OpenAI’s API data-controls page states that, as of March 1, 2023, API data is not used to train or improve models unless a customer explicitly opts in. That does not mean every API request disappears immediately. Abuse-monitoring logs may contain prompts, responses, and derived metadata; the default retention is up to 30 days, subject to exceptions for legal requirements or what is reasonably necessary to protect services or others.

Application state is a separate category: some API features store it to fulfill a request. OpenAI documents a 30-day default application-state period for the Responses API when the relevant storage conditions apply, including when store is true. Endpoint and feature exceptions apply, so these periods should not be treated as a guarantee for every API request. OpenAI API data controls
Anthropic commercial services and API
Anthropic’s commercial retention policy, dated July 1, 2026, says API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from its backend within 30 days, with exceptions for services with longer customer-controlled retention, an agreement such as zero data retention, policy enforcement, or legal compliance. Commercial products that save and continue conversations retain chats for product continuity. The policy says flagged chats may be retained for up to two years and associated trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven years. Does zero data retention mean nothing is stored?
No. Zero data retention (ZDR) is a bounded control, not a universal promise that data vanishes at every point in a workflow. Anthropic says that under a ZDR arrangement it does not store customer prompts or responses at rest after the API response is returned, for eligible features. The arrangement must be enabled at the organization level, and not every feature qualifies; some stateful or tool features are ineligible.
Anthropic also says flagged chats or sessions may be retained for up to two years and data may be retained where required by law. If Claude runs through Bedrock or Google Cloud Agent Platform, the cloud provider’s policies govern its processing. A ZDR arrangement with one provider therefore does not by itself describe what a connected tool, cloud intermediary, or separately saved application state may retain. What to check before sending sensitive information
- Identify the product and account type. Consumer chat, business workspace, and API policies can differ.
- Review the model-improvement setting. Opting out of training or improvement is not the same as disabling retention.
- Check retention and storage separately. Look for abuse-monitoring logs, application state, saved conversation history, and temporary-chat rules.
- Check enabled features. File uploads, tools, integrations, and cloud-hosted deployments can add data recipients or change eligibility for retention controls.
- Read the relevant provider policy for your deployment. Do not assume that a setting covers every endpoint, feature, intermediary, or legal and safety exception.
If the exact client or deployment is unknown, there is no reliable basis to promise a particular network route or that a prompt is never retained. Treat sensitive material according to the specific product’s documented controls and avoid sending information that the relevant service does not need.
