A scheduled time can make funds eligible to finish, but the escrow is delivered only when an EscrowFinish transaction succeeds. To verify a specific escrow, inspect its XRPL ledger entry and compare its time conditions with the latest validated ledger close time; use Ripple’s reports for dated company-level holdings context.
What an XRP escrow release means
An XRPL escrow is a ledger object that holds XRP for a destination under rules set when the escrow is created. Those rules can be time-based, condition-based, or combine both. An escrow’s existence, its eligibility to finish, and the actual delivery of its XRP are distinct states.

- Created: The sender submits
EscrowCreatewith an amount, a destination, and any applicable time or condition rules. - Eligible: A time-based escrow with
FinishAfterbecomes eligible only after the relevant validated-ledger close time passes. A condition-based escrow also needs matching fulfillment data. - Finished: A successful
EscrowFinishdelivers the XRP to the destination and removes the escrow object. - Canceled: If a
CancelAftertime is set and expires before the escrow is finished, the escrow can no longer be finished and may be canceled back to the sender.
XRPL documentation describes time evaluation in relation to validated-ledger close times, rather than promising release at an exact wall-clock second. Ledger closing can make practical timing vary by about five seconds. A calendar date arriving is therefore not, by itself, confirmation that XRP has been delivered.
In plain language, an “unlock” usually refers to a point when an escrow may be finished under its rules. It does not necessarily describe a completed transaction. Even after the time condition has passed, an escrow may still exist on-ledger until a valid finishing transaction is submitted and succeeds. This distinction is useful when reading headlines or tracker schedules that label a date as a release.

How the escrow rules work
Time and condition fields
FinishAfter specifies the earliest time at which an escrow can be finished. If the escrow has a cryptographic condition, the finishing transaction must also include fulfillment data that matches it. The XRPL Escrow ledger-entry documentation describes the fields stored on the ledger.
CancelAfter sets a later point after which cancellation is permitted. Under the documented XRP escrow rules, an escrow with no CancelAfter does not expire and cannot be canceled. If cancellation is available and used, the funds return to the sender rather than going to the destination.
The fields answer different questions: FinishAfter controls when a time-locked escrow may be finished, while CancelAfter governs when it may be canceled. A condition is a separate requirement for finishing. Where a condition is present, passing the time threshold alone is not sufficient; the matching fulfillment must also be supplied. For a particular escrow, read the actual ledger fields instead of assuming every object follows the same schedule.

Who can finish or cancel
The transaction submitter does not have to be the destination account: any account may submit an eligible EscrowFinish. Likewise, any account may submit EscrowCancel once the cancellation time has passed. The transaction must still satisfy the escrow’s protocol rules. See the XRPL documentation for EscrowFinish and EscrowCreate and escrow conditions.
This means a date becoming eligible does not identify who will submit the next transaction, or establish that a transaction has already occurred. The ledger state and the result of the relevant transaction are the evidence to check.

Ripple’s monthly escrow program: unlock is not a sale
Ripple’s December 16, 2017 explanation, authored by David Schwartz, described an original arrangement of 55 billion XRP — Ripple, 2017, placed into 55 independent contracts of 1 billion XRP each — Ripple, 2017. The contracts had monthly expirations over 55 months. Ripple said unused amounts would be placed into later escrow contracts. These are figures about the original setup, not a live measure of XRP available on the market or a complete description of today’s escrow ledger.
Schwartz wrote: “The amount of XRP actually released into circulation will likely be much less than this.” The distinction matters because an escrow becoming eligible to finish does not mean its full amount is sold, distributed to the public, or added to market supply. XRP not used from a release can be placed into escrow again.
Ripple’s Q1 2025 report says remaining released XRP is put back into escrow and reports 37,130,000,005 XRP subject to on-ledger escrow as of March 31, 2025 — Ripple, 2025. That is a company-reported quarter-end snapshot, not a live balance. The report distinguishes escrowed holdings from XRP available in wallets and discusses transfers to third parties, including investment products; those reporting categories do not establish a specific market outcome.
The historical monthly schedule and the quarter-end report serve different purposes. The first describes the original program’s design; the second provides Ripple’s reported holdings context at a stated cutoff. Neither should be read as a complete, live inventory of every escrow object or as a promise that the same amount will enter the market on a particular date. Later re-escrows and disclosures matter when interpreting the program over time.
No price-impact percentage or net market-supply figure follows from the unlock amount alone. The relevant primary sources do not quantify a monthly release’s price or market impact, so it would be misleading to infer one from a scheduled escrow amount. Ripple’s reporting categories, including transfers to third parties, are disclosures about how holdings are described; they are not evidence of a particular price response or market outcome.

How to check a specific XRP escrow
- Find the escrow ledger entry. Use an XRPL explorer or query the relevant account with the XRPL
account_objectsmethod. The account lookup approach is covered in the XRPL escrow lookup tutorial. - Confirm the object and parties. Check the owner, destination, amount, and any
FinishAfter,CancelAfter, or condition fields. This helps distinguish the particular escrow from an account’s other objects or a dashboard’s summary. - Read the latest validated ledger close time. Compare that close time with the escrow’s time fields. A
FinishAftertime must have passed for a time-locked escrow to be eligible; aCancelAftertime indicates when cancellation may be submitted. - Convert the timestamp correctly. XRPL escrow time values are seconds since the Ripple Epoch. Convert them for display, but retain the original ledger value when checking the field against ledger data.
- Check for a successful transaction. Eligibility is not delivery. To establish that the XRP moved, verify that an
EscrowFinishtransaction succeeded and that the escrow object was removed. If the escrow was canceled, check for the cancellation transaction instead.
The ledger lookup is more authoritative for the state of an individual escrow than a projected schedule or a calendar date. XRPL’s EscrowFinish reference explains the finish transaction and its timing and condition requirements.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen checking a tracker’s claim, work from the object outward: first identify the escrow entry, then read its parties, amount, and requirements, and finally compare the time fields with validated-ledger time. A projected date can help you find what to inspect, but it is not a substitute for those checks. If the question is whether funds have actually moved, look for a successful finish or cancellation rather than relying on a label such as “unlock” or “release.”
Where to track Ripple’s releases
| Source | Best for | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Validated XRPL ledger or account lookup | Verifying a particular escrow’s fields, status, and time eligibility. | Requires interpreting ledger data and comparing it with validated-ledger close time. |
| Ripple Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report | Ripple’s stated quarter-end holdings context and explanation of its escrow reporting. | Its figures are dated to March 31, 2025, not live. Check the report’s cutoff date when citing any balance. |
| Third-party dashboards | Convenient aggregated views of escrow objects and schedules. | Figures and forward-looking displays are derived and can change. Verify material details against the ledger and Ripple disclosures; a dashboard is not an endorsement by Ripple or XRPL. |
A tracker surfaced by the XRPL tutorial says it follows Ripple-declared accounts and live account_objects data. Treat that kind of display as a discovery aid: the ledger entry is the check for a specific escrow, while Ripple’s report supplies Ripple’s own dated holdings context.
Choose the source based on the question. For an individual escrow’s fields or eligibility, the validated ledger is the direct reference, though interpreting it takes more effort. For Ripple’s stated quarter-end holdings categories, use the company report and preserve its cutoff date. For a quick aggregated view, a dashboard may be easier to scan, but its schedules and totals are a convenience layer and should be verified before being treated as authoritative.
These sources are not interchangeable. An XRPL lookup can show the state of a ledger object; it does not by itself reproduce Ripple’s company-level holdings explanation. A quarterly report gives a dated disclosure rather than live, second-by-second escrow status. A third-party tracker can aggregate data but should not be presented as Ripple- or XRPL-endorsed.

How to interpret a release schedule safely
- Call an amount scheduled to unlock only what the schedule establishes; do not say it “hits the market” merely because a date arrives.
- Confirm ledger eligibility against the latest validated close time, and confirm delivery with a successful finish transaction.
- Keep historical program figures, quarter-end company disclosures, and live ledger observations separate. They answer different questions and have different dates.
- Do not derive market impact or net circulating supply from an unlock figure without evidence that measures those outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do XRP escrow releases work?
An escrow holds XRP under ledger rules. When its requirements are met, an eligible EscrowFinish transaction can deliver the funds to the destination and remove the escrow object. A scheduled time can make an escrow eligible; it does not, by itself, prove delivery.
Does Ripple’s monthly XRP unlock mean Ripple sold one billion XRP?
No. Ripple’s 2017 description covered 55 independent contracts of one billion XRP each, with monthly expirations, and said unused amounts would be placed into later escrow. An unlock amount is not proof of a sale, distribution, or addition of that full amount to the market.
Where can I track Ripple’s XRP escrow releases?
For a specific escrow, inspect the XRPL ledger entry or use the relevant account’s account_objects lookup, then compare its time fields with the latest validated ledger close time. Ripple’s XRP Markets Reports provide dated company-reported holdings context, while third-party dashboards offer convenient but derived views.
How can I tell whether an escrow has actually been released?
Check for a successful EscrowFinish transaction and confirm that the escrow object was removed. A date on a schedule or a passed FinishAfter threshold shows eligibility, not necessarily a completed transfer.
What do FinishAfter and CancelAfter mean?
FinishAfter sets the earliest time a time-locked escrow can be finished. CancelAfter sets a time after which cancellation is permitted. If cancellation is used, the funds return to the sender. Under the documented XRP escrow rules, an escrow without CancelAfter does not expire and cannot be canceled.
Best Value
Are XRP escrow timestamps exact calendar times?
The time fields are seconds since the Ripple Epoch and are evaluated against validated-ledger close times. Ledger closing means practical timing can vary by about five seconds, so a displayed calendar date is not a promise of second-level precision.
Can any account finish or cancel an XRP escrow?
Any account may submit an eligible EscrowFinish, and any account may submit EscrowCancel after the cancellation time. The transaction still has to meet the escrow’s protocol requirements, including any condition for finishing.
What is Ripple’s reported escrow balance?
Ripple’s Q1 2025 report reported 37,130,000,005 XRP subject to on-ledger escrow as of March 31, 2025. This is a company-reported quarter-end snapshot, not a live balance.

The Bottom Line
An XRP escrow’s scheduled date is only one part of the story: verify its ledger fields and validated close time to establish eligibility, then check the transaction history to establish delivery or cancellation. Ripple’s historical monthly program and dated holdings reports provide context, but an unlock alone does not show that XRP was sold or quantify a market effect.
