How Xbox Game Pass Works: Downloads, Cloud Gaming, and Game Availability

Xbox Game Pass provides access to a changing catalog. Check each game’s plan, platform, download and cloud options, and current availability before you play.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox Game Pass gives subscribers access to a changing library of games, not permanent ownership of every title in it. Depending on the game, plan, region, and device, you can download a game to play locally or stream it with Xbox Cloud Gaming. Check the specific game’s current catalog entry to confirm it is included for your plan and supports the way you want to play.

What Xbox Game Pass includes—and what it does not

Game Pass is a subscription to a rotating catalog. Xbox says access to a catalog game lasts while your subscription is active and the game remains available. Canceling or allowing the subscription to expire ends subscription access; a game leaving the catalog also ends access through Game Pass. This is different from buying a game, though select games you own may separately be streamable through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The available plans and benefits depend on your market. On its US plan page, Xbox lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass, with different libraries, supported platforms, launch timing, and included benefits. The page’s advertised library counts when captured on October 7, 2026 were 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate, and 300+ PC games for PC Game Pass. Counts and terms can change and should not be treated as global or permanent. See Xbox’s current US plan details and check the offer available in your market.

How to check whether a game is available to you

  1. Search for the game in the Xbox Game Pass catalog.
  2. Use the catalog filters to select your subscription and intended platform, such as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, handheld, or Cloud.
  3. Open the game’s entry and confirm whether it supports download on your device, cloud streaming, or both. Availability of one mode does not guarantee the other.
  4. If you are deciding whether to subscribe or buy, check again before you act. Xbox says titles, features, numbers, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform.

Downloading a game versus streaming it

Download and play locally

A download installs a supported game on a supported console or PC. The available installation option depends on both the title and your platform; use the catalog filters and game entry to verify compatibility before downloading. Once installed, local play does not rely on a continuous cloud stream, though a game may still require an internet connection for particular features or services.

Stream with Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud gaming runs the game remotely and sends the video and audio to your device over the internet while your inputs are sent back. Xbox lists compatible PCs, phones, tablets, some consoles, and select TVs and VR headsets among supported device types. Supported devices, games, and regions can change, so confirm current availability on Xbox Cloud Gaming and the game’s catalog page.

Some cloud-playable games that you own or buy outside the Game Pass catalog can be streamed, but only select titles qualify; ownership alone does not make every game cloud playable. Xbox also says select free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Other cloud catalog access requires an eligible Game Pass subscription.

What you need for cloud gaming

  • An eligible subscription and game: For subscription-based cloud access, you need an active eligible Game Pass plan and a supported game. Select free-to-play games are an exception.
  • A supported device and region: Cloud gaming is not available on every device or in every location.
  • A compatible controller: Xbox generally requires a controller connected through Bluetooth or USB. Select games offer touch controls.
  • A suitable connection: Xbox lists 10 Mbps as the minimum download speed and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Meeting the listed speed does not guarantee a particular experience. Xbox notes that performance depends on factors including connection, location, and device. Streamed play may also have limits involving video resolution, audio outputs, or cloud-save storage. See the Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ for current requirements.

Cloud gaming time limits announced for November 2026

In a September 3, 2026 announcement, Xbox said monthly cloud gaming limits would begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Xbox said subscribers could buy additional playtime through the Xbox Store, with pricing and purchase details to be shared before the change took effect. Hours from multiple Game Pass subscriptions do not stack; the subscription with the higher allowance applies.

These figures describe Xbox’s announced policy, not necessarily the active terms on the day you read this. Confirm the current allowance and any additional-hour pricing in Xbox’s terms or store. Xbox estimated that 4% of Game Pass subscribers would be affected by the change; that is the company’s estimate, not an independently measured result. In its announcement, Xbox Wire Editor-in-Chief Joe Skrebels acknowledged that the change was significant for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud.
