Xbox Cloud Gaming runs a supported game on a remote Xbox server in Microsoft Azure, then streams the game’s video and audio to your device. Your controller or other input travels back over the internet. That means you can play without a console or gaming PC running the game locally, but you still need a supported device, game, region and internet connection—and usually an eligible Game Pass plan.
What happens when you start a cloud game?
- You choose a supported game. The cloud service must offer that title for your account, plan and region.
- Xbox assigns a server. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes assigning the player an Xbox server from a pool.
- The game launches remotely. The service signs the player into the server and starts the game there. The server renders and encodes the gameplay as a stream.
- Your device sends input and receives the stream. Button presses, touch input or other supported controls travel to the remote session; its resulting picture and sound travel back.
- The session closes and data syncs. When play ends, the game closes and save or session data is synchronized.
Xbox says users connect to a nearby datacenter, but “nearby” does not guarantee a fast or stable route. Distance, routing and network conditions can all affect delay and stream quality.

Cloud Gaming is not Remote Play
With Xbox Cloud Gaming, the game runs on Microsoft’s remote Xbox server. Xbox Remote Play instead streams a game running on your own Xbox console. Both send a video stream to another device, but the machine doing the game processing—and the hardware you need at home—differs.

What you need to play
- A supported region, device and title. Compatibility and availability vary by market and can change. Check Xbox’s current cloud gaming information for the exact device, game and region before relying on a particular setup.
- An eligible plan for most paid-library games. Xbox lists supported free-to-play exceptions, including Fortnite. A free-to-play exception does not mean every free game is available to stream.
- A suitable connection. Xbox recommends 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets for best performance, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are recommendations, not minimums that guarantee a particular result.
- A supported way to control the game. Most games require a connected gamepad. Xbox lists its own controllers as well as partner and selected third-party controllers. Touch controls are available on mobile for some games, and mouse-and-keyboard input is supported for selected titles. Check the game’s requirements rather than assuming one input method works everywhere.
Microsoft has identified browser play, Samsung TVs, Fire TV devices and Meta Quest headsets as endpoints. That does not establish compatibility for every model or market; check Xbox’s live device information before buying hardware for cloud play.

Why streaming feels different from playing locally
Video streaming can buffer before playback; a game cannot predict every next input. A cloud session has to carry your input to the remote game, process it, encode the resulting frame and deliver it back to your screen. Delay in any of those stages can make controls feel less immediate than they do on a local console.
Microsoft describes latency contributions from game processing, encoding and decoding, and device factors. In a March 2025 developer article, Microsoft reported that its Direct Capture optimization reduced input latency by 16–72 milliseconds depending on the game. That figure describes the reported reduction from one optimization, not total end-to-end latency or a result every player should expect.

A 2024 IFIP Networking paper tested cloud-game performance under controlled bandwidth and added-latency conditions. Its results illustrate how constrained bandwidth can reduce image quality or disrupt play, and how latency can affect responsiveness. Those controlled results are not universal Xbox requirements or a prediction for every home connection.
Microsoft reported that Xbox Cloud Gaming streamed 140 million hours of gameplay during October–December 2024. That is a figure for that quarter, not a current annual total.

Why cloud gaming has costs beyond the game itself
What the player may pay
Cloud gaming does not eliminate the cost of internet access. Xbox says internet service provider fees apply, and mobile play may use data subject to a carrier’s charges or limits. Xbox’s pages give connection-speed recommendations, but do not establish a universal data-per-hour figure. Actual data use can depend on the stream and session, so a fixed monthly data allowance cannot be calculated from the published speed recommendations alone.
For most paid-library cloud games, the plan is another ongoing cost. Console ownership can involve a larger upfront hardware purchase instead, while cloud play shifts more of the setup toward a compatible screen, controller, connection and recurring access. Neither option is automatically cheaper: the answer depends on what hardware and service you already have, which games you play, and the current plan and playtime terms.

Why it costs Microsoft to provide
Each active cloud session needs server capacity to run a game and resources to encode and deliver its stream. In a September 3, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels explained the reason for a coming usage model: “We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer.” More users and longer sessions require Microsoft to provide more capacity and streaming resources.

| Game Pass plan | Announced monthly cloud hours |
|---|---|
| Ultimate | 15 hours |
| Premium | 10 hours |
| Essential | 5 hours |
These are announced allowances for the change beginning in November, not a statement that the limits are already in effect. Xbox said it would share the price and purchase options for extra playtime before the change takes effect. The announcement did not provide those prices, so it is not yet possible to calculate the full cost of playing beyond an included allowance. Xbox also cautioned that availability and features may vary by market.
When cloud play may be the better fit
Cloud Gaming is most useful when you want to play a supported title on a device that cannot run it locally, or when you want access to newer-generation games without immediately buying newer console hardware. Microsoft has noted that Xbox One owners can use cloud play for eligible games designed for Xbox Series X|S, subject to the service’s game and plan availability.
A local console avoids dependence on a continuous stream from a remote server, but requires the console hardware and local installation. Cloud play avoids running the game on that hardware, but depends more directly on connection quality, device compatibility and the terms of the cloud service. For a cost comparison, include internet or mobile-data costs, hardware you already own, subscription access and any applicable cloud-hour or extra-playtime charges; do not compare subscription prices alone.
