How Xbox Backward Compatibility Works for Disc and Digital Games

Xbox backward compatibility supports selected older games. Digital titles use the owning account; disc titles require an inserted disc and a drive-equipped console.

Xbox backward compatibility lets selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games run on newer Xbox consoles—but only titles in the supported catalog. Digital games use the account that owns them; disc games require a supported disc to be inserted, even though the console downloads the game to storage. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical game discs.

Which Xbox games work on newer consoles?

Compatibility is specific to each game, not guaranteed for an entire generation. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. The direction does not work in reverse: an Xbox One game does not run on an Xbox 360 or the original Xbox.

Check the Xbox backward-compatible game catalog for the exact title and your console. The catalog covers selected titles, and features can vary by game. Owning a game that is absent from the supported list does not make it playable through backward compatibility.

How digital backward-compatible games work

Sign in to the Xbox account that owns the digital game. If the title is supported, it should appear in the console’s Ready to Install area, where you can download it. Buying a digital copy alone is not enough if the game is not in the backward-compatible catalog.

Digital access is tied to the account and can also depend on territory and Store availability. If a title is missing, first confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing account and check the current catalog and local Store listing.

How disc backward-compatible games work

  1. Confirm that the game appears in the supported catalog for your console.
  2. Insert the game disc into a console with an optical drive.
  3. Allow the console to download and install the game to storage.
  4. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play; the console uses it to verify access.

The disc is therefore an access check, not necessarily the source of the game data during play. You need a supported title, a usable disc, and a console with a disc drive.

Portal 2 - Xbox 360
  • The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces dynamic characters, fresh puzzle elements, and a larger set of devious test chambers
  • The two-player mode features a separate campaign with unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters.
  • Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game.
  • A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.
  • Players explore areas of the Aperture Science Labs and reunite with GLaDOS, the murderous computer companion.

Can Xbox Series S play disc games?

No. Xbox Series S is digital-games-only and cannot read or authenticate Xbox game discs. If you own a compatible physical game, you need a disc-drive Xbox console to use that disc directly. Check the exact console model before buying, since drive support is the deciding factor for a disc library.

Backward compatibility is not Smart Delivery

Backward compatibility means a supported game from an earlier Xbox generation can run on a newer console. Smart Delivery is a separate feature for eligible games released across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; it provides the appropriate version for the console. Neither feature guarantees that every older game gets a Series X|S edition, an automatic graphics upgrade, or identical features. Microsoft notes that specific features vary by game.

What to check before installing or choosing a console

  • Exact game: Confirm that the title is currently listed for the console you intend to use.
  • Ownership type: Digital ownership uses the purchasing account; disc ownership requires the physical disc during play.
  • Drive: A physical disc requires an optical drive; Series S has none.
  • Expected version: Basic backward compatibility does not necessarily mean a separate enhanced version or Smart Delivery upgrade.

Microsoft described more than 500,000 hours of gameplay testing across four Xbox generations in the year before its October 2020 Series X|S announcement. That is a historical testing figure, not a current total or a guarantee that every Xbox game works. The current catalog is the useful check for a particular title.
