Short answer: X’s public documentation describes how media is uploaded, referenced by the platform, attached to posts, and shown to users. It does not disclose the physical systems that store the file bytes or deliver them. A media ID, API object, or image URL is a public-facing reference—not proof of a particular storage provider, data center, or CDN.
What “stored on X” can mean
The phrase can refer to three different things: the media file’s bytes, the application-level record that identifies or associates the media, and the URL or playback experience a user sees. X documents parts of the second and third layers, as well as some upload mechanics. Its public materials do not establish where the underlying bytes reside or how X operates its storage and delivery infrastructure.
- File bytes: The original or processed image, GIF, video, or audio data. X’s reviewed public documentation does not identify the storage vendor, data-center locations, replication approach, retention rules, or cache/CDN topology.
- Media reference: An API media entity, identifier, or URL that lets an application refer to or display media. These references do not reveal the physical storage location.
- User experience: The attachment, image, or playback shown in an X post or feature. The visible result does not disclose the internal format or processing path.
How X media works by type

How a video upload becomes a post attachment
X’s public model separates uploading media from creating a post that refers to it. In plain terms, an application sends an asset through a supported upload route, receives or associates a media reference, and then uses that reference when attaching the asset to a post. The exact workflow depends on the route and the applicable developer documentation.
The historical chunked-upload example
In a 2015 developer announcement, X described a video upload divided into three operations: INIT starts an upload session, APPEND sends file segments, and FINALIZE completes the upload processing step. The resulting media ID is then used when creating a post. This is useful for understanding the separation between uploading a file and attaching it, but it is a historical protocol example—not a complete description of today’s v2 API or all current upload routes.

Why the older media endpoint is not the whole story
X marks the older statuses/update_with_media endpoint as deprecated and directs developers to the media-upload guidance and the separate post creation or update step. That legacy endpoint supported one picture and did not support multi-image posts, GIFs, or video. Its limits and behavior should not be treated as the current platform-wide media model.
Current user-facing video limits depend on account and route
X Help Center specifications accessed on October 2, 2026 describe the following user-facing posting limits. They are route- and account-specific and can change; they should not be assumed to apply to developer APIs or Media Studio.

The limits above are not interchangeable. In particular, Media Studio’s 8 GB maximum is not evidence that all X video uploads share that cap. X says videos uploaded or attached through its desktop or mobile apps also appear in the Media Studio Library; that library is an account-management surface, not a disclosure of the systems behind the media.
A 2015 developer announcement cited a 15 MB maximum and a 30-second duration. Those figures describe launch-era conditions and are not current upload specifications.

Where are X photos and videos physically stored?
X’s public media URLs and API fields show how applications can refer to media, not where the media is physically kept. The public materials described here do not identify storage vendors, server or data-center locations, replication and backup arrangements, transcoding details, CDN footprint, total capacity, or a general retention schedule. No authoritative public figure is established here for X’s total media volume or storage capacity.
The same boundary applies to Spaces: an API representation proves that a Space can be accessed as an API object, but it does not establish where live audio or recordings are stored, whether recordings are retained, or for how long. It would be unsupported to assume that Spaces audio uses the same storage and playback path as an attached video.

What the Media Studio Library tells you
X describes Media Studio as a library where account-associated images, GIFs, and videos can be viewed and managed. Its documentation also says media uploaded or attached through desktop and mobile X apps appears in that library. This is useful for understanding an account-facing management surface; it should not be mistaken for a map of X’s backend storage or for a universal set of upload specifications.
