How Would Rovers Explore the Moon’s Lava Tubes?

No rover is documented as having entered a lunar lava tube. NASA concepts show how future robots could descend, map underground terrain, and relay data.

No lunar rover is documented in the cited NASA sources as having entered and explored a lava tube. Instead, NASA has studied robotic cave-exploration concepts, and its CADRE project is developing cooperative rover technology that could be useful for future lunar cave missions. A cave-rover mission would first assess an entrance, then deploy robots inside, map the space with cameras and other sensors, and relay data through a planned communications link.

Why lunar lava-tube exploration needs a different rover plan

A rover driving across an open lunar plain can, in principle, communicate with a lander or Earth through a direct radio link. A rover inside a deep opening may be out of that line of sight. It also has to get down a steep, possibly rocky entrance and navigate a place where the route back may be difficult to find or traverse. Access, communication, mobility, power, and recovery therefore have to be designed together—not as separate add-ons.

That is why the current examples are proposals and technology development rather than reports of completed cave exploration. NASA’s 2012 Spelunker report lays out one possible architecture for reaching and studying skylights, lava tubes, and caves. CADRE, meanwhile, is a planned cooperative-robotics technology demonstration; NASA describes cave exploration as one potential future application, not its primary destination.

The aim of a first mission would be to establish what is physically accessible and what can be measured safely. A rover could produce images and maps, estimate the shape of an opening, and gather subsurface data where its instruments allow. The available sources do not establish the dimensions, resources, or habitability of any particular lunar tube, so those should not be assumed as outcomes.

How would a rover get into a Moon cave?

1. Identify and assess a candidate entrance

Orbital images and other remote observations can identify candidate pits or skylights. Before dispatching a rover, mission planners would need to understand the rim’s shape and stability, the slope and rubble below it, the route a robot could take, and whether the opening appears to lead into a void. NASA’s Spelunker report treats skylight reconnaissance and modeling as mission-enabling work: the landing and deployment plan depends on knowing enough about the entrance to approach it safely.

Reconnaissance is not just a matter of picking the largest-looking opening. A useful site would need to offer a feasible landing area near the rim and a way to lower or otherwise deploy equipment without losing the robots or their data link. The sources do not give a universal safe slope, opening size, or terrain threshold; those limits would depend on the particular site and vehicle.

2. Establish the route down

In Spelunker’s proposed design, the spacecraft would land safely at a skylight rim and lower a power-and-communications hub on a tether. Small autonomous robots would then explore below it. The report describes hybrid driving-and-hopping robots, an approach intended for challenging cave terrain. These are elements of a mission concept, not hardware demonstrated in a lunar lava tube.

A separate NASA discussion considers a multi-agent arrangement in which one rover enters a tube while surface robots remain available to relay data. That approach may help preserve a communications path, but NASA notes uncertainty about whether the cave explorer could return. The design question is therefore not only how to descend: a mission also needs to decide whether the robots are expected to climb back out, remain in the cave, or prioritize sending useful measurements before communication or power is lost.

3. Navigate and build a map

Once underground, a rover would need to estimate where it is and how far it has moved while avoiding hazards and building a useful map. Stereo cameras can provide three-dimensional visual information, and navigation sensors can help estimate movement. These data could support local route planning as well as a record of the cave’s visible geometry.

Ground-penetrating radar could add a different kind of information by investigating beneath the surface. NASA describes distributed radar measurements from multiple rovers as a way to combine observations collected at different positions and build maps at different depths. This is not a promise that radar will reveal every feature: what it can resolve would depend on the instrument, the material being examined, rover position, and operating conditions.

How would a rover communicate underground?

A deep cave can block a direct radio path to a lander or the lunar surface. A rover should not be assumed to have continuous contact with Earth from inside a tube. Instead, the communications architecture would need to carry information from the cave to a reachable surface or lander connection, while accounting for gaps in coverage.

Spelunker proposes a tethered hub that supplies power and communications into the cave. NASA’s CADRE design takes a different approach for its surface technology demonstration: three rovers communicate with one another over mesh radios and connect to a base station on a lander. A base station can combine and redistribute information. NASA’s cave-exploration discussion also identifies the communication range between cave explorers and surface robots as an important consideration.

  • MARS ROVER – 2 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 3.67" x 3.35" x 2.34"

These approaches solve related problems but are not interchangeable. A tether can carry power and communications down the entrance, but the tether and hub must be deployed and managed along the route. A relay rover or mesh network avoids relying solely on a cable, but the robots must maintain useful links through their positions and the cave geometry. A cave mission’s exact arrangement would depend on the entrance, route, robot count, and power plan; the cited sources do not provide comparative performance figures that would identify one design as best.

What sensors and autonomy would the robots need?

Imaging and navigation

Stereo cameras can provide depth-aware, three-dimensional imagery useful for recognizing terrain and constructing a local map. Navigation sensors help estimate movement, which matters when a rover cannot depend on frequent commands from Earth. Images, motion estimates, and observations from other robots could be shared so the team can build a more complete picture than a single vehicle’s viewpoint allows.

Subsurface measurements

Ground-penetrating radar is the key subsurface sensing capability highlighted in the CADRE material. Multiple rovers could take readings from separated locations, then share those observations for distributed mapping at different depths. That makes the group’s position and data-sharing plan part of the measurement strategy, not merely a communications feature.

Autonomy and shared mapping

Earth-based operators cannot be expected to steer every turn in a hazardous, inaccessible environment. NASA identifies autonomy and multi-agent systems as useful for risky terrain: robots can exchange location and map information and make some local decisions without waiting for step-by-step ground instructions. CADRE’s project manager, Matthew Frost, described the purpose this way: “By increasing autonomy of multi-agent systems, we will reduce the number of times when the rovers have to ‘phone home’ to get ground control instructions.”

Autonomy does not mean a rover is independent of mission control or that every failure can be handled automatically. The practical goal is to let the robots continue useful, bounded tasks when a command cannot arrive quickly, while preserving data and avoiding hazards within the capabilities of the system. NASA’s lunar-surface technology overview identifies autonomy, cave exploration, and related capabilities as areas of interest, but the sources do not specify a complete cave rover’s decision rules or recovery guarantees.

How the main proposed approaches differ

Approach Access and mobility Communications and power What is established
Spelunker Land near a skylight rim; lower a hub by tether; explore with autonomous hybrid driving/hopping robots. The tethered hub is proposed to provide power and communications into the cave. NASA technical report published in 2012; a prototype mission concept, not a flown lunar cave mission. NASA Technical Reports Server
CADRE Three small rovers are designed to cooperate autonomously; the cited material describes a technology demonstration on the lunar surface, not a cave descent. Mesh radios connect the rovers and a lander base station; the base station combines and redistributes information. JPL describes a technology demonstration planned for Reiner Gamma aboard IM-3 in 2026. NASA cites cave exploration as a possible later application. NASA CADRE project; NASA JPL CADRE mission page
Surface relay plus cave explorer One rover could enter while surface robots remain available to relay data; the specific deployment and return method is not established. Surface robots may provide a relay path; NASA also identifies the tethered hub as a relevant alternative. Discussed as a possible multi-agent concept. NASA notes uncertainty over whether the cave explorer could return. NASA CADRE project

The comparison is architectural rather than a measured contest: the sources do not report head-to-head tests, performance rankings, or a selected flight design for exploring a lunar lava tube. An actual mission would have to match access method, terrain, communications, autonomy, and sensors to a specific entrance and objective.

What CADRE could—and could not—show

CADRE is relevant because it is intended to demonstrate cooperative autonomy among three small rovers. NASA and JPL describe mesh communications, stereo cameras, navigation sensors, and multistatic ground-penetrating radar among its capabilities. The planned experiment is intended to operate through the daylight hours of one lunar day—about 14 Earth days—according to JPL. That duration applies to the technology demonstration, not to a hypothetical cave mission.

JPL lists the demonstration as planned for Reiner Gamma aboard IM-3 in 2026. The cited material does not establish a completed lunar cave deployment or report a CADRE rover entering a lava tube. The useful connection is technological: cooperative mapping, local autonomy, and shared radar observations could inform later exploration systems, while cave access, underground communications, and safe recovery remain separate engineering challenges.

NASA’s Sonny Mitchell, program element manager for the Game Changing Development Program, summarized the potential value of robot teams: “Multiple small, autonomous robots could cover more ground, potentially helping us map unexplored regions on the Moon.” The statement describes a potential benefit, not a measured result from an underground lunar mission.

What could make a cave-rover mission fail or limit its findings?

  • Unsafe access: An entrance may have a steep slope, unstable rim, or rubble that prevents a safe descent or deployment. The approach has to be assessed before committing the robots.
  • Lost communications: Once a rover moves beyond the radio path, it may not be able to relay data directly. A tether, relay rover, mesh link, or lander connection must be incorporated into the plan.
  • Limited autonomy: A vehicle may encounter terrain or hazards it cannot safely handle without timely instructions. Autonomy can reduce dependence on frequent commands, but it does not guarantee safe passage or recovery.
  • Power and return constraints: A cave route consumes the resources available to the robots and their support system. The mission must decide what data to prioritize and whether returning to the entrance is required or feasible.
  • Incomplete sensing: Cameras describe visible surfaces; radar offers subsurface investigation but does not imply a complete or definitive map. The coverage and interpretability of measurements depend on where and how they are taken.

NASA identifies access, navigation, hazard avoidance, autonomy, communications, and subsurface sensing as relevant technology areas. The design would need to be tailored to the chosen opening and the mission’s specific objective; there is no single cave-rover procedure or established success rate in the cited material.

What is the status of lunar lava-tube rover exploration?

The documented work here is conceptual and developmental, not an account of a rover already exploring underground on the Moon. Spelunker is a 2012 NASA technical-report concept. CADRE is described as a cooperative robotics technology demonstration planned for a surface site, with cave exploration presented as a potential later use. NASA’s lunar-surface technology page discusses autonomous and cave-exploration capabilities as areas of interest, not as evidence of a completed cave mission.

For a future mission, the core sequence is straightforward to describe but difficult to engineer: identify and model an entrance, deploy a route into it, navigate and map with autonomous robots, and return measurements through a communications and power architecture designed for the cave. Which deployment method, sensors, or relay arrangement is ultimately chosen will depend on the site and mission requirements.
