How World Models Could Help AI Predict and Act in the Physical World

World models could help AI predict the consequences of actions in physical environments. Current systems show promise in interactive generation, robot planning and driving simulation, but remain specialized and need stronger evidence of long-range planning and real-world reliability.

World models are AI systems designed to predict how an environment changes and how actions affect it. That makes them a promising frontier for robotics, simulation and other tasks where physical cause and effect matter. But current systems are specialized demonstrations, not proof that language models are obsolete or that general-purpose physical intelligence has arrived.

What are world models?

A practical definition is a learned representation of an environment that predicts what may happen next, potentially given a particular action. A system might use observations such as images or video to estimate the current state, predict how that state will change, and help choose what to do. The scope of the term is unsettled: some systems generate interactive scenes, others predict future video representations, and others are designed to support planning or simulation.

The useful distinction is not simply whether a model produces realistic images. A model can render a convincing scene without reliably representing object permanence, contact, or the consequences of a chosen action. As AI researcher Fei-Fei Li put it in an Associated Press report published June 23, 2026: “A video model that produces gorgeous but physically impossible flames, a language model improvising a playable game, and a physics engine that faithfully simulates combustion all go by the same name.”

Why might AI need more than language prediction?

Language models predict and generate sequences of language. That capability can support explanation, instruction-following and planning in words, but it does not by itself establish that a system can predict what will happen when a hand pushes a cup, a robot grasps an unfamiliar object, or a vehicle encounters an unusual road condition.

World-model research targets that perception-to-action link: representing an environment, anticipating how it may change, and using those predictions to select actions. The challenge includes geometry, motion, contact and cause and effect. Carnegie Mellon computer science dean Martial Hebert told the Associated Press that physical interaction involves “all the geometry of the world, the dynamic of how I move my hand, the physical interaction of the contact with the cup,” and said, “This is much more complex than just predicting the next word in a sentence.”

This is a complementary direction, not evidence that language models will be displaced. Language systems may help interpret goals or communicate plans, while predictive models or simulators contribute information about possible outcomes. The eventual architecture is an open question; no evidence here establishes that one model type or design will serve every task.

How do current world-model approaches differ?

Examples often grouped under “world models” pursue different goals, so their reported numbers are not a like-for-like ranking.

System Main purpose What its publisher reports What that evidence does not establish
Genie 3 Generate navigable, interactive environments from text. Google DeepMind’s August 5, 2025 announcement reports generation at 24 frames per second and 720p, with consistency for a few minutes; it described a limited research preview for a small cohort of academics and creators. It is not established as a general-purpose real-world simulator or a consumer product. DeepMind also identifies constrained direct actions, challenges modeling interactions among multiple agents, imperfect geographic fidelity and limited continuous interaction duration.
V-JEPA 2 Predict future states in learned video representations and support robot planning. Meta’s June 11, 2025 announcement describes a 1.2-billion-parameter model. Meta reports pretraining on more than 1 million hours of video and 1 million images, followed by action-conditioning post-training using 62 hours of robot data. Meta’s training figures are specific to this system, not a guaranteed recipe for other models. Its reported robot results concern selected laboratory tasks, not general-purpose robot competence.
Waymo World Model Adapt world-model techniques to autonomous-driving simulation. Waymo’s February 6, 2026 company post says its system builds on Genie 3 and can generate controllable camera and lidar outputs, including rare or altered driving scenarios. The company description establishes a simulation capability claim, not independent evidence that simulated training gains automatically improve road safety.

The table reflects company descriptions of different research systems, not independent comparative tests. A generator, a predictor used for planning, and a specialized driving simulator can all be useful without sharing an objective or evaluation method.

What has robot-planning research demonstrated?

Meta reports 65–80% success rates for V-JEPA 2 on pick-and-place tasks involving new objects in unseen environments, with visual subgoals. That is meaningful evidence of planning utility in the evaluated setup. It is not a general robot success rate: the result applies to the selected tasks and laboratory conditions described by Meta.

Meta also reports a gap between human performance and top-model performance on its physical-reasoning benchmarks. On IntPhys 2, current video models were at or near chance at identifying events that violate physics. Together, these results illustrate why a model can be useful for a bounded planning task without demonstrating robust, human-like intuitive physics.

How far ahead can a world model help an agent plan?

A model’s ability to generate a coherent sequence is not the same as its ability to choose actions that achieve a distant goal. A September 30, 2026 study, “The Planning Limits of Latent World Models,” tested action-conditioned predictors on Meta-World tasks and BridgeData V2 real-robot interactions. For the tested models and five-step imagined rollouts, its indexed abstract reports reliable action ranking over roughly 5–10 control steps, while evaluated goals lay 16–53 steps away. The study also reports that even perfect predictions in its simulator did not remove this horizon effect.

These are results for specified tasks, models and methods, not a universal limit for every world model. They do show why evaluation needs to ask whether predictions remain useful over the distance between the current state and the actual goal, rather than measuring only short-term visual coherence.

What does success mean beyond visual realism?

There is no single score that captures all the capabilities associated with world models. A useful evaluation separates these questions:

  • Visual quality: Does the generated scene look plausible?
  • Physical consistency: Do objects, motion and contact behave coherently over time?
  • Action conditioning: Does the prediction change appropriately when the agent chooses a different action?
  • Planning utility: Do predictions help select actions that make progress toward a goal?
  • Transfer: Does the behavior carry over to unfamiliar objects, settings or real equipment?
  • Operational reliability: Does performance hold up under edge cases and uncertainty in the environment?

These measures answer different questions. A high-quality rendered scene does not establish causal understanding; a successful laboratory task does not establish transfer to every robot or setting. The 2026 world-model landscape report also cautions against a universal ranking of systems designed for different domains and objectives.

What are the main obstacles to real-world use?

The 2026 landscape report identifies long-horizon reasoning, action conditioning, transfer from simulation to reality, scarcity of interaction data and safety under uncertain predictions as unresolved challenges. These problems are related: a small prediction error can compound across a long plan, while a model trained in one setting may misjudge an unfamiliar object or condition.

Simulation can help explore situations that are difficult, expensive or dangerous to reproduce physically. But simulated performance is preliminary evidence, not proof of real-world reliability. The World Economic Forum’s 2026 analysis recommends comparing system performance with real-world outcomes, testing edge cases, monitoring after deployment and allowing independent access to performance evidence. Those safeguards matter especially when a failure could cause harm.

For autonomous driving, for example, generating unusual camera or lidar scenarios may help expose a system to more varied conditions. That capability alone does not show how a deployed vehicle performs on roads. The relevant evidence must connect simulation results to measured outcomes in the actual operating environment.

So, is the next frontier for AI world models?

World models are an important research frontier because they address a gap between recognizing or describing a scene and predicting what actions will do within it. Their potential is most direct in settings where the environment changes in response to an agent and outcomes can be checked—such as robot manipulation or simulation for training and evaluation.

The evidence supports a growing family of approaches, not a settled category with one definition or a demonstrated successor to language models. Genie 3 illustrates interactive environment generation; V-JEPA 2 reports bounded predictive-planning results; Waymo describes a driving-focused simulation adaptation. Their capabilities should be judged by action-aware prediction, useful planning horizons, real-world transfer and independently verified outcomes—not by the label “world model” or visual realism alone.
