It depends on the round. In the first round, a Game 3 is the deciding game: the loser is eliminated. In the semifinals and Finals, a team can lose Game 3 and stay alive because those series are longer. For 2026, the first round is best of three, the semifinals best of five, and the Finals best of seven.
How do WNBA playoff series work?
The top eight teams qualify for the WNBA playoffs, regardless of conference, and are seeded by regular-season record. Each matchup is a series: teams keep playing until one reaches the number of wins required for that round.

“Best of” does not mean every scheduled game must be played. A series ends as soon as one team reaches the required number of wins: two in the first round, three in the semifinals, or four in the Finals. If a team wins the first two games of a first-round series, it has swept the matchup, so Game 3 is not played.

Only in the first round. If the teams split the first two games, a first-round Game 3 is played to decide the series. The winner advances; the loser is eliminated. Under the current schedule, the higher seed hosts that deciding game.

In a semifinal or the Finals, Game 3 is not automatically decisive. If the teams were tied 1-1 before it, losing Game 3 leaves the team trailing 2-1, with the series still in progress.
What happens after a Game 3 loss?

These outcomes assume the teams entered Game 3 tied 1-1. The key distinction is the round: first-round Game 3 decides the matchup, while a Game 3 in the longer rounds changes the score but does not end the series.

Which WNBA playoff format applies in 2026?
The WNBA’s 2026 playoffs page and 2026 postseason FAQ list the current round formats. The first-round 1-1-1 home-court sequence and best-of-seven Finals took effect in 2025, as announced by the league in October 2024. Older league pages may describe an earlier schedule or a five-game Finals, so check the season when consulting historical format information.
