The WNBA’s eight playoff teams are selected from the league-wide regular-season standings, not by conference. Teams are seeded by record, then enter a fixed bracket: the first round is best-of-three, the semifinals best-of-five and the Finals best-of-seven. How many teams make the WNBA playoffs?
Eight teams qualify based on their regular-season records across the league. The WNBA does not use separate conference qualification routes: a team’s place in the full-league standings determines whether it makes the postseason and its seed. Each team played 44 regular-season games in 2026, following the schedule format the league announced in 2024 for the 2025 season. That schedule length is context for the standings, not a separate qualification requirement.

How are WNBA playoff seeds determined?
Seeds follow regular-season records. If teams are tied, the WNBA’s standings page lists these tiebreakers in order for playoff eligibility and home-court advantage:

For a tie among more than two teams, the league applies the criteria to eliminate teams where possible. If one or more teams are eliminated at a step, the process restarts at the first criterion for the teams still tied. What is the WNBA playoff bracket?
The bracket is set by seed, with no reseeding after the first round. The top and bottom seeds meet in one half, while the other four teams occupy the other half:

Winners advance within their assigned half of the bracket; the teams are not paired again according to their seed after the opening round. The league’s format announcement describes the bracket structure.
How long is each playoff series?
The postseason has three rounds. A team advances by winning the required number of games in its series:

The current format took effect in 2025: the first round moved to a 1-1-1 home schedule, and the Finals expanded to best-of-seven. Older descriptions of the Finals as best-of-five refer to the earlier format, not the current one.

The higher seed hosts the opening game of every series and receives more home games if the series goes the distance. The exact order depends on the round:

Not every listed game is played: a series ends as soon as one team reaches the required wins. The WNBA said the first-round 1-1-1 setup was intended to guarantee both teams a home game in that series.
