Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows keeps its clock synchronized through the built-in Windows Time service, W32Time, which uses network time protocols to obtain time from a configured source. On a standalone PC that source may be a manually selected NTP server; on most Active Directory domain computers, it is the domain time hierarchy. Check which setup applies before changing anything: pointing a managed computer at a public server can conflict with organizational policy.
How Windows time synchronization works
W32Time runs as a Windows service and uses time providers to exchange time information with a source. It adjusts the local system clock based on the response. Correct time supports reliable timestamps and network validation; in Active Directory environments, it also matters for Kerberos authentication and directory operations. Microsoft describes W32Time as the service that synchronizes date and time for computers in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Microsoft’s Windows Time overview covers Windows 10 and 11 and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, among other listed environments.

Time synchronization uses UDP port 123. Microsoft notes that the built-in client uses UDP 123 as its source port and that NTP servers typically listen on UDP 123, so local firewall rules, network firewalls, or server-side policy can prevent communication. Identify the computer’s time-source role
| Computer type | Typical source | What to do before changing it |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone Windows computer | A manually configured NTP peer may be appropriate. | Confirm which time servers are suitable for your network and availability needs. |
| Active Directory domain member | Typically follows the domain hierarchy (NT5DS). | Check with the domain administrator before configuring a manual Internet peer; domain policy may control the client. |
| Forest-root PDC emulator | Typically configured to use an external time source. | Follow the organization’s time-source and security requirements. |
These are typical configurations, not guarantees for every device. Microsoft documents the domain hierarchy and manual peer choices in its Windows Time overview and W32Time tools and settings reference.

Inspect the current configuration
Run these commands in Command Prompt. Query commands are useful for investigation; configuration changes generally require an elevated Command Prompt. Remote configuration has additional administrative requirements.

Check the active source:
w32tm /query /source. The result tells you which time source Windows currently reports. -

Inspect active settings and their origin:
w32tm /query /configuration. This is especially useful on a domain-managed device, where policy may define the settings. -
Compare your clock with a named peer:
w32tm /stripchart /computer:<server> /samples:5 /dataonly. Replace<server>with the actual server name; the command reports sample offsets.
The commands are documented in Microsoft’s w32tm reference.

Standalone computer: specify manual peers
For a standalone client intended to use manually specified NTP peers, Microsoft documents this pattern:

- Up to 6000 visits per second
- Local area network synchronization timing accuracy: 0.5-2ms
- Support GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, QZSS NTP v2 (RFC 1119), NTP v3 (RFC 1305), NTP v4 (RFC5905)
- Internally integrated high- timing GNSS satellite receiver
- SNTP v3 (RFC 1769), SNTP v4 (RFC 2030)
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntp1.example.net ntp2.example.net" /syncfromflags:manual /update
The example hostnames are placeholders, not recommended servers. Choose real time sources appropriate to your organization and network. Microsoft recommends three or more servers when multiple peers are configured; if you configure only two, it recommends marking one as fallback-only with flag 0x2. Microsoft’s W32Time tools and settings reference
Domain member: return to the domain hierarchy
If an administrator intends a domain member to use the Active Directory hierarchy, Microsoft documents these commands:
w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update
net stop w32time
net start w32time
Do not apply this or a manual-peer configuration without confirming the intended domain policy. Group Policy can define Windows NTP client settings; when the Configure Windows NTP Client policy applies, a domain member may not use the NtpServer registry value. Inspect w32tm /query /configuration first. Microsoft warns that registry values are critical and invalid settings can cause serious Windows errors, so use supported policy and w32tm tools rather than casual registry editing. Troubleshoot synchronization failures
Start with status and rediscovery
After checking the source and configuration, ask Windows to rediscover sources and synchronize:
Rank #4
- 1. GPS Satellite Time Synchronization: This NTP server receives global time signals from GPS satellites, ensuring nanosecond-level time synchronization accuracy, providing high reliability for your network equipment.
- 2. High-Precision NTP Service: Provides SNTP/NTP time synchronization with Daylight Saving Time (DST) support for finance, communications, and government.
- 3. Low Latency and High Performance: Optimized design with ultra-low network latency, ensuring multi-device sync accuracy to the millisecond level, ideal for applications where time precision is critical.
- 4.Flexible Dual-Power Deployment: Supports either AC power (wide voltage input 110V-264V) or standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af/at).
- 5. Easy-to-Use Web Management Interface: Supports easy installation and remote management. The intuitive interface makes it easy to monitor device status, configure settings, and maintain the system — ideal for IT administrators and technical teams.
w32tm /resync /rediscover
If it reports “The computer didn’t resync because no time data was available,” check the likely causes in this order:
-
Verify the peer name and confirm that DNS resolves it to the intended server.
-
Check whether the request can leave the computer and whether a reply returns over UDP 123. Local and network firewalls or other network policy may block the traffic.

Confirm that the target is running an NTP service and advertising as an NTP server.

If the peer is reachable but does not accept the request, check whether it requires a different request mode.
Microsoft lists an invalid or missing DNS name, blocked UDP 123, and a target not advertising as an NTP server among the causes of this error. A network trace can help distinguish a request blocked locally from one sent without a response, which may point to a network firewall or server-side issue. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for the no-time-data error
Check client-mode compatibility only when indicated
Some non-Windows NTP servers accept client-mode requests only. Microsoft documents using the ,0x8 peer flag to select client mode, followed by restarting W32Time and requesting synchronization. Treat this as a targeted compatibility fix, not a default setting: first confirm that the server requires client mode and that the configured peer is the one being used. Microsoft’s client-mode configuration example

Microsoft states that “Under reasonable operating conditions, you can maintain a 1-ms accuracy with respect to UTC or better” for Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 Anniversary Update domain members. This is a conditional capability statement for those systems and conditions, not a measured guarantee for every PC, network, configuration, or workload. Microsoft’s Windows Time service support boundary
For an organization’s authoritative time server, Microsoft recommends obtaining time from a hardware source. Its guidance also states that synchronization with an Internet time source has no authentication. Whether hardware time equipment or additional controls are appropriate depends on the organization’s accuracy, traceability, and security requirements; the guidance does not establish a need for a particular appliance for an ordinary Windows user.
