A window air conditioner cools a room by moving heat outdoors. Its indoor side draws room air across a cold coil; its outdoor side needs airflow across a hot coil to carry that heat away. That designed airflow is different from air leaking through gaps around the unit: seal the installation perimeter, but never block the unit’s outdoor intake or discharge.
How a window air conditioner moves heat
A window AC has two air paths and a sealed refrigerant circuit connecting them. The indoor fan circulates room air over the evaporator coil. Refrigerant in that coil absorbs heat from the air, which then returns to the room cooler. The compressor drives refrigerant through the circuit to the outdoor condenser coil, where it releases the collected heat. The outdoor fan moves air across that coil and carries the heat into the surroundings. The refrigerant then returns to the indoor side and the cycle repeats. ENERGY STAR explains the room-AC heat-transfer process; the U.S. Department of Energy describes the components and refrigeration cycle.

Indoor air and outdoor air do different jobs
The indoor air is circulated through the room and over the evaporator; outdoor air passes over the condenser to receive heat. The outdoor fan is not there to bring fresh outside air into the room. Rather, outdoor airflow lets the unit reject the heat it removed from indoors. If that airflow is obstructed, the condenser cannot shed heat as intended, and cooling performance can suffer.
Why sealing around the unit does not mean blocking airflow
Airflow through the appliance’s designed outdoor openings is necessary. Unintended airflow through gaps around the window installation is not. Leaks can let hot, humid outdoor air into the room, undermining comfort and making the AC work against incoming heat and moisture. Seal gaps around the window and the unit while keeping the outdoor intake and discharge clear. The DOE/NREL homeowner installation guide discusses leakage paths and sealing; NREL Senior Engineer Chuck Booten, Ph.D., puts the principle plainly: “Air sealing around the window and the air conditioner is critical for best performance”

What to seal—and what to leave open
- Seal: unintended gaps between the window frame, sash, and AC installation, using appropriate weatherstripping or sealing materials.
- Leave unobstructed: the unit’s outdoor air intake and condenser discharge, as well as its designed indoor air openings.
- Check the fit: follow the unit’s installation instructions so panels and seals close gaps without covering vents.
Room fit and basic upkeep affect comfort
Airflow is only part of good cooling. ENERGY STAR advises matching room-AC capacity to the room and provides a consumer square-footage chart with adjustment guidance. That chart is practical sizing guidance, not a universal engineering load calculation. An oversized AC can cool a room before removing enough moisture, leaving it cool but clammy. ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guidance also discusses efficiency and design features, including variable-speed compressors.
Keep the filter checked and clean or replace it as needed; ENERGY STAR says this helps the unit operate efficiently. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for filter access and care. Refrigerant is part of a sealed circuit, not a routine homeowner adjustment.
