Wind can move grains, but dune activity depends on whether loose sediment is available and on how plants and crusts alter airflow and hold the ground together. The balance varies by place and over time.
How does wind move sand and build dunes?
Aeolian, or eolian, processes are wind-driven erosion, transport, and deposition. The National Park Service summarizes them as “erosion, transportation, and deposition of sediment by the wind” in its Aeolian (Dunes) Landforms overview. Sand dunes are one result of these processes; wind also transports finer material, including dust and loess.

When wind can move loose grains, some travel in short hops called saltation, while others roll or creep along the surface. Grains may accumulate where the airflow slows or encounters an obstacle. As sand reaches a dune’s crest, or brink, it can pass over the edge and avalanche down the steeper lee slope, called the slipface. Repeated transport and avalanching shift sand and can move a dune downwind, as described in the USGS overview of Eolian Processes.
This sequence explains how dunes change, but it does not imply constant movement or a fixed migration rate. The amount and direction of transport depend on the winds and the sand exposed at the surface.

How does sand supply affect dune formation?
Wind cannot build or maintain a sand dune without loose, transportable sediment. Sand may come from rivers, waves, glaciers, or deposits already present in the landscape; no single source applies to every dune field. The National Park Service’s landforms overview describes these varied sources, while the USGS explains the links among sediment source, climate, vegetation, and dune activity in Our Dynamic Desert.
Supply means more than the total amount of sand in a region: sediment must be accessible to winds capable of moving it. If the supply reaching a field declines, transport and deposition can be restricted. A dune field may become less active or persist as a relict landscape; renewed sediment input can support further movement and deposition. A field’s present appearance therefore reflects both its wind conditions and its sediment history.

Why regional source pathways matter
USGS research in the southwestern United States illustrates how sources differ between regions. The Colorado River supplies sand to at least some major Sonoran Desert dune fields, while locally derived alluvium appears more important to some Mojave dune fields. These findings come from the named areas, not a universal model of desert dunes; see Eolian sand transport pathways in the southwestern United States.

In the Grand Canyon corridor, USGS distinguishes dune fields receiving modern windblown sand from the Colorado River from relict fields that have received little or none since river regulation began in the 1960s. That regional contrast shows why present-day activity cannot be inferred from wind alone. The distinction is documented in Vegetation and substrate properties of aeolian dune fields in the Colorado River corridor, Grand Canyon, Arizona.

How does vegetation stabilize dunes?
Plants can slow or redirect airflow near the ground, adding surface roughness, while stems and roots trap and bind sediment. Biological soil crust can also help stabilize the surface. These effects can reduce sand mobility and erosion, but their strength depends on vegetation structure and on the wind and sediment supply acting on the site.
In drylands, the spacing and shape of woody plants influence airflow and sediment transport. As a result, vegetation does not produce one predictable change in dune shape simply because plant cover increases. A USGS study of transport across the grassland–forest continuum describes the role of woody vegetation structure in A conceptual framework for dryland aeolian sediment transport along the grassland–forest continuum. USGS research on dune mobility also notes that vegetation and biocrust interact with wind variability and sediment supply: Do topographic changes tell us about variability in aeolian sediment transport and dune mobility?.

What dune shapes can tell us—and what they cannot
Dune forms offer clues about wind direction, sediment availability, and vegetation, but no shape is a complete record of one controlling factor. The USGS guide to Types of Dunes describes crescentic dunes as associated with more directional winds and star dunes with winds from multiple directions. Parabolic dunes often have arms held by vegetation even as the sand body can migrate.
Classification also distinguishes simple dunes from compound forms, where dunes are superimposed, and complex forms, which combine dune types. These categories help describe visible patterns; interpreting how a field formed or whether it is active also requires local evidence about wind, sand sources, vegetation, and the period being considered.

It later evolved as a category of motorsports, but the racing vehicle created to run in the desert was collectively called Dune Buggy. The same kind was released from a number of manufacturers, but it was made by B. F. Meyers & Co. based in California. Mayers Munx was made as a competition vehicle, but many young people enjoy street riding. B. F. How to compare two dune systems
A useful comparison asks the same questions of both places rather than assuming that similar-looking dunes share the same history:
- Wind: Is the wind direction relatively consistent, or does it vary? What conditions can move the exposed grains?
- Sand supply: Where does transportable sediment come from, and is it currently reaching the dune field?
- Vegetation and crust: How much of the surface is covered, and what are the spacing and structure of plants or biocrust?
- Setting and time: What local landscape processes affect the field, and does the evidence describe current activity or an earlier period?
Combining these observations gives a more reliable account than treating dune shape, plant cover, or wind direction as a standalone explanation.
