Water will not flow across the Moon as rivers or streams. Lunar “flow” means individual molecules moving between grains of surface soil, cold patches, and the Moon’s extremely thin exosphere. As the ground warms, some molecules can leave the surface, move to another location, and later settle where it is colder.
What “flow” means on the Moon
The Moon has no thick atmosphere to spread heat around its surface, and there is no ordinary wind or rain to carry water. Instead, water moves molecule by molecule. A molecule attached to a soil grain may gain enough energy as the surface warms to desorb—leave the grain—and make a short hop across the surface. It may also enter the exosphere, the exceedingly sparse layer of particles around the Moon, before returning to the ground.

This exchange can reverse as local conditions change: molecules may leave warmer ground and adsorb onto grains or collect as frost in colder places. It is transport across the surface, not liquid water running downhill.
What observations reveal about lunar water movement
A changing ultraviolet signal
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) carries the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP), which measured ultraviolet signals that vary with local time and terrain. The changes are consistent with water molecules adsorbing onto and desorbing from grains in the uppermost regolith. The peer-reviewed study’s NASA Technical Reports Server record describes the inferred amount as less than 1% of a monolayer in that upper layer; it is an interpretation of the observed signal, not an inventory of all lunar water. The signal did not show the expected decline when the Moon passed through Earth’s magnetotail, where the solar-wind proton source is absent. The study’s authors therefore favored migration as an explanation for the observed distribution over a steady, immediate supply from the solar wind. That supports movement of water, but it does not establish that one mechanism explains every form or location of lunar water.
Cold pockets in rough terrain
Rocks and crater rims cast small, shifting shadows. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory described a model in which frost can persist or accumulate in these cold pockets even while nearby ground is sunlit. As the Sun’s position changes, previously shaded frost may be exposed, enter the exosphere, and settle again in other cold shadows. This is a model for how mobility could work, not a direct observation of individual molecules traveling between named craters.

The temperature contrast helps explain the idea: NASA/JPL gives about −210°C for shaded spots and up to 120°C for nearby sunlit areas. These are illustrative values for sharply different neighboring surface conditions, not a single temperature range experienced uniformly across the Moon. NASA/JPL’s explanation of the shadow model discusses the proposed role of rough terrain.
Water, frost, and hydration are not interchangeable
Reports of lunar “water” can refer to different things: water molecules associated with the uppermost soil, water or hydroxyl chemically bound in lunar materials, or ice and frost trapped in cold regions. A hydration signal does not always tell scientists which form is present. Earlier remote observations could not consistently distinguish hydroxyl (OH) from water (H₂O); NASA says the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) later confirmed H₂O in sunlit areas. Permanently shadowed polar craters are cold enough to provide places where water can remain trapped.

NASA’s 2020 explainer says the Sahara Desert has 100 times the amount of water detected in lunar soil by SOFIA. That comparison refers to the amount detected in the soil by that observation, not to all water reservoirs on the Moon. It should not be read as a global lunar-water inventory. NASA’s overview of water on the Moon explains the distinction between hydration evidence and confirmed H₂O.

The observations and models point to multiple possible forms and routes of movement, including surface hopping, exchange through the exosphere, and frost in small shadows. They do not settle the total amount of lunar water, its exact distribution, its origins, or how much could be extracted. As Björn Davidsson of NASA/JPL put it, “Frost is far more mobile than trapped water.” A mobile surface molecule and ice locked in a persistently cold region are different questions for both science and future exploration.

Lunar Trailblazer was designed to map the forms and distribution of lunar water with a water-sensitive imaging spectrometer and a thermal mapper. NASA/JPL reports that the mission ended on July 31, 2025, after communications were lost following its February 26, 2025 launch; it is not an operating source of measurements.
