Its continuing business sells HDDs for cloud and enterprise storage, computers, and consumer use. In fiscal 2026, Cloud brought in 89% of WD’s revenue, making data-center demand—and the purchasing decisions of a small number of very large customers—the central forces behind its results.
What Western Digital sells now
Western Digital describes its continuing business as developing, manufacturing, and supplying data-storage devices and solutions based on HDD technology. Its current reporting consists of a single HDD segment, with sales grouped into three end markets: Cloud, Client, and Consumer. The Flash business became the separate company Sandisk when the separation was completed on February 21, 2025. Western Digital’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K and its separation announcement describe the reporting boundary.

That boundary matters when reading older financial results: WD treats Sandisk’s pre-separation business as discontinued operations in historical periods. Consolidated figures from before the split therefore are not directly comparable with current WD revenue unless the Flash business is excluded.

Where the revenue comes from
WD designs and manufactures HDDs, including recording heads and magnetic media. It sells to hyperscale cloud providers, cloud and enterprise customers, computer makers and other OEMs, resellers, distributors, and retailers. WD says it works directly with customers during system design, testing, and product qualification; some customers have long-term agreements.

|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud | High-capacity enterprise HDDs for public and private cloud and enterprise storage systems, including tiered storage for data kept reliably over long periods. | $11.490 billion; 89% of total revenue | Up 38% |

| Consumer | External HDD storage products sold globally through retail and channel partners. | $703 million; 5% of total revenue | Up 13% |
Revenue figures and growth rates are Western Digital’s reported continuing-operations results for fiscal 2026, ended July 3, 2026. The end-market descriptions are from the company’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K. Consumer external drives are a real product route for individuals, but they are not representative of WD’s main revenue engine: Cloud was nearly nine-tenths of the year’s sales.
How HDD sales turn into revenue
Two measures help explain the business: the volume of storage capacity shipped, measured in exabytes, and the average selling price (ASP) per exabyte. More capacity shipped can increase revenue, as can charging more for each unit of capacity. In fiscal 2026, WD reported $12.919 billion in revenue, up 36% from $9.520 billion in fiscal 2025. The company attributed the full-year increase primarily to a 25% rise in exabytes sold and an 8% increase in ASP per exabyte.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Cloud followed a similar pattern: WD said Cloud revenue grew 38%, as exabytes sold rose 27% and ASP per exabyte increased 8%. These are company-reported annual changes, not a guarantee that shipment volumes or pricing will keep rising at the same rate. The full-year figures appear in WD’s Form 10-K; its August 5, 2026 results release reported fourth-quarter revenue of $3.747 billion, 44% above the year-earlier quarter’s $2.605 billion.

Cloud providers and enterprise customers buy high-capacity HDDs to store large and growing volumes of data. WD says long-term cloud storage growth, AI adoption, and hybrid-data workloads are supporting demand for higher-capacity drives. The company also says those products can be more complex to manufacture and have longer lead times, which helps explain why customers may plan and negotiate earlier. These are WD’s descriptions of its market and customer relationships, not proof that AI alone caused its reported growth.

At its February 2026 Innovation Day, WD said 90% of its revenue was driven by “AI and cloud.” That is a company characterization, not an audited revenue category or a measured causal attribution. The clearer reported comparison is that Cloud accounted for 89% of fiscal 2026 revenue; the two figures should not be treated as equivalent. WD’s Innovation Day announcement also outlined product plans:
- 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD: WD said it was in qualification with two hyperscale customers, with volume production planned for the second half of 2026.
- HAMR drives: WD said qualifications were underway with two hyperscale customers and ramp production was planned for 2027. Its stated roadmap targets up to 60TB for ePMR and 100TB for HAMR by 2029.
- Bandwidth and power technologies: WD claimed High Bandwidth Drive technology could deliver up to twice the bandwidth of conventional HDDs, with a path to up to eight times; Dual Pivot was described as targeting up to twice sequential I/O performance and as being in the lab, with availability planned for 2028. WD also claimed a new power-optimized HDD would use 20% less power.
These capacities, performance figures, and dates are company claims and forward-looking plans announced in February 2026—not confirmation that qualification, production, or availability milestones have since been achieved.

What the Flash separation changes in financial comparisons
Sandisk is no longer part of WD’s continuing HDD revenue. When comparing current results with older periods, use WD’s continuing-operations presentation rather than adding the former Flash business back into the comparison. The split can also make reported earnings look unusual: WD’s fiscal 2026 statement of operations included a $6.498 billion gain on its retained Sandisk interest. That non-operating gain means GAAP net income is not a simple measure of recurring HDD operating performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRisks behind the growth story
- Customer concentration: The ten largest customers accounted for 73% of fiscal 2026 revenue, and three customers each represented at least 10%. A major customer reducing or delaying purchases could have a substantial effect on results.
- Data-center deployment timing: WD says sales depend substantially on large Cloud customers’ deployment patterns and their ability to secure other components needed for data-center builds. Longer agreements may improve visibility but do not remove buildout or execution risk.
- Pricing and industry cycles: Higher ASP per exabyte contributed to fiscal 2026 growth, but demand volatility, pricing competition, macroeconomic conditions, and supply-chain issues can change results. One strong year does not establish a lasting growth rate.
- Roadmap execution: Greater drive capacity brings manufacturing complexity and longer lead times, while ePMR and HAMR production dates remain plans rather than completed milestones.
In its August 5, 2026 results release, CEO Irving Tan said WD entered fiscal 2027 with “continued confidence in the durability of demand” and increasing business visibility. That is management’s outlook, not an independent forecast. In the same release, CFO Kris Sennesael gave first-quarter fiscal 2027 guidance of $4.1 billion revenue, 55.5% non-GAAP gross margin, and $4.00 non-GAAP earnings per share at the midpoint of the provided ranges. Those are management estimates, not reported results. The release provides the guidance and remarks.
