Final Fantasy XIV is a capable portable experience on Nintendo Switch 2, but its performance depends on how you play. One August 2026 review reported an unlocked frame rate that varied in handheld mode, with a 60 fps target, while docked play tended to sit closer to 30 fps. These are reviewer observations—not results from a controlled benchmark or a performance guarantee.
How well does FFXIV run on Switch 2?
The available review describes a game that is enjoyable to play on Switch 2, particularly in handheld mode, with some compromises in visual effects and performance consistency. Reviewer Alejandro Castillo of MeriStation called image quality solid while noting that effects are reduced compared with PS5 or PC. The review also praised handheld play and touch input, while pointing out less precise cursor control in mouse mode and some stability rough edges. Castillo’s review used a Switch 2 code provided by Ziran, so its findings should be read as one reviewer’s experience, not as an independently reproducible test.

The game supports handheld, tabletop and TV play according to Nintendo’s US eShop listing. The same listing gives the download size as 109.3 GB; check available system storage before installing. A compatible storage expansion may be useful if space is tight, but the listing does not make one a requirement.

Is FFXIV 60 fps on Switch 2?
Not consistently, based on the cited review. Castillo says the default frame rate is unlocked, with a target of 60 fps, and fluctuates in handheld mode. He reports that Switch 2’s variable refresh rate (VRR) display makes those changes less noticeable in handheld play. That describes the reviewer’s experience; it is not an official frame-rate specification.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
In TV mode, the review says performance tends to hover around 30 fps and notes that the game offers a 30 fps cap. It does not provide frame-time captures, resolution measurements or a controlled comparison with other platforms, so the reported figures should not be treated as guarantees or as a precise head-to-head result.
Does it run better handheld or docked?
For smoother-feeling play, the review favors handheld mode: frame rates still vary, but VRR helps make that fluctuation less noticeable. Docked play is described as closer to 30 fps. Players who prefer a steadier ceiling can try the in-game 30 fps cap, though the review does not provide a measured comparison of frame pacing with the cap on and off.
In practical terms, choose handheld if you value portability and the display’s VRR behavior; choose TV mode if you prefer a larger screen and are comfortable with performance the reviewer found nearer 30 fps. These observations apply to the review’s experience, not every area, duty or future software build.

How does the Switch 2 version look and control?
MeriStation characterized image quality as solid, while observing reduced visual effects relative to PS5 or PC. The review praises handheld play and touch input. It is less positive about mouse mode, where cursor handling was not precise enough for the reviewer, and it mentions some stability rough edges without documenting a reproducible fault.
That makes the Switch 2 version a more compelling fit for players who are happy with controller or touch interaction than for someone expecting mouse-mode precision. The cited review does not establish a specific resolution or quantify visual differences between platforms.
Was the launch loading issue fixed?
Square Enix reported prolonged loading on certain fades to black in instanced duties, particularly when entering a duty surrounded by many characters. In a notice updated August 7, 2026, the company said processing optimizations addressing the issue were applied during maintenance that day. This is a reported fix; there is no basis here to claim that the issue still affects the current build.

Can you use your existing character?
Yes. Square Enix says existing players can sign in with their Square Enix account and use the same character. To carry over HUD layout, gear sets, macros and other settings, the company recommends backing them up with its Server Backup Function before moving over. If you do not use the backup function, you can configure those settings again manually. See the Square Enix Support Center’s existing-character FAQ for the transfer guidance.
