Water droplets can model selected membrane behaviors, but they do not recreate a complete living cell. In a droplet interface bilayer (DIB), lipid-coated aqueous droplets meet and form a thin bilayer at their shared boundary. Researchers can use that interface to study transport, membrane properties and electrical activity in a controllable setup.
What is a droplet interface bilayer?
A DIB is a membrane-like bilayer formed where two aqueous droplets coated with lipids touch. The droplets remain separate compartments, while the lipid layers at their contact form a shared interface. Depending on the experiment, one droplet can act as a donor and the other as an acceptor, allowing researchers to quantify molecular transport across the bilayer.

DIBs are one kind of model membrane. A 2022 perspective notes that they can better mimic some features of cell membranes than traditional models such as liposomes and black lipid membranes, but also concludes that “the perfectly biomimetic, yet bespoke, model membrane has yet to be built.” Stephenson, Korner and Elvira, Nature Chemistry (2022)

The value of a DIB is that it makes selected membrane processes experimentally accessible. Depending on its composition and setup, researchers can investigate how molecules move between compartments, measure electrical behavior, or connect multiple droplets into networks. These are focused measurements of membrane function, not proof that the droplets behave as full cells.

The right model depends on the question. A transport experiment, an electrical measurement and a system for communication among multiple compartments may call for different architectures; the cited studies do not establish one universally best design.
Why temperature and lipid composition matter
DIB formation depends on experimental conditions, including the lipid mixture and temperature. In a 2021 microfluidic study using naturally derived phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) formed DIBs only above their phase-transition temperatures under the tested conditions. The study also reported that formation in a bespoke formulation usually occurred above the highest transition temperature of any single lipid in that mixture.

Those findings describe that study’s microfluidic platform and lipid formulations; they should not be treated as a universal temperature rule for every DIB recipe. Korner and Elvira, Soft Matter (2021)
How DIBs differ from other artificial-cell models
“Artificial cell” refers to several experimental architectures, not one standard design. These examples arrange compartments differently and demonstrate different functions; they are related to membrane research but are not interchangeable with a DIB.

A historical example of electrical output
A 2009 National Institute of Standards and Technology account described a simplified model cell: a salt-containing water droplet enclosed by lipid. When two such droplets contacted, the lipid arrangement formed a double bilayer. A difference in salt concentration could drive electrical output through a circuit connected to electrodes. This illustrates how droplet systems can be used to explore biophysical principles; it is not evidence of a practical battery product. NIST account (October 2009)
