Some plastics can be chemically broken into smaller molecules that serve as building blocks for new materials. But “unzipping” does not describe every plastic process: depolymerization can recover monomers, while heat-driven routes such as pyrolysis may instead produce oil, gas or fuel. Which route works—and what counts as its useful output—depends on the plastic, the waste stream and the process.
What does it mean to chemically “unzip” plastic?
Plastics are polymers: long molecules made from repeating chemical units. Depolymerization uses chemical treatment to break bonds in a polymer and produce smaller molecules, sometimes the monomers used to make that plastic. Those recovered monomers can potentially be used as feedstock to make plastic again. This is different from simply melting and reshaping plastic.

The analogy has limits. Not every polymer can be efficiently taken back to its original monomers, and a process that breaks plastic down does not automatically produce material suitable for making new plastic. The product’s composition, purity and intended destination matter.
How do the main recycling routes differ?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency groups advanced recycling technologies into conversion, depolymerization and purification. These routes change plastic in different ways; mechanical recycling, by contrast, generally processes plastic without changing its chemical building blocks. The EPA describes the categories in its Advanced Recycling of Plastics overview.

| Route | What happens | Typical outputs | What the output may become |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical recycling | Plastic is sorted, cleaned, shredded and melted without changing its chemical building blocks. | Reprocessed polymer material | New products; material quality can vary with the waste plastic. |
| Depolymerization | Chemical treatment breaks polymer bonds. | Monomers or other smaller molecules | Potential feedstock for making plastic or other products, depending on the output and its specifications. |
| Purification | A polymer is dissolved without breaking the bonds between its monomers; additives or contaminants are separated and the polymer is recovered. | Recovered polymer | The EPA describes the intended output as polymer with the same chemical properties and quality as virgin polymer; that is not a guarantee for every facility or feedstock. |
| Pyrolysis | Plastic is heated in the absence of oxygen. | Pyrolysis oil, hydrocarbon gases and char | Depending on processing and specifications, outputs may be used as fuels or chemical feedstocks. |
| Gasification | Plastic is converted at high temperatures into a gas mixture. | Syngas, mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide | Potential fuel or chemical feedstock. |
The U.S. Government Accountability Office also describes pyrolysis and gasification as advanced plastic recycling technologies, while emphasizing that their outputs differ from recovered polymer. See its 2021 Science & Tech Spotlight: Advanced Plastic Recycling.
Which plastics can be depolymerized?
The polymer’s chemistry helps determine whether depolymerization is suitable. EPA names polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamides and polylactic acid (PLA) as examples. PET depolymerization is also discussed as a route to useful monomers in Rahimi and García’s review of chemical recycling in Nature Reviews Chemistry.

One example is methanolysis: plastic is heated under pressure with methanol and a catalyst to break polymer chains into monomers. That example should not be generalized to all plastics. Conversion technologies, meanwhile, often target polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Whether a waste stream can be processed also depends on sorting, contamination, pretreatment and the quality and quantity of material available.

Pyrolysis and gasification are thermal conversion routes, not the same process as depolymerization. Their outputs are mixtures such as pyrolysis oil, hydrocarbon gases or syngas—not necessarily purified monomers ready to make the same plastic again. Those outputs may be directed to fuel or chemical production. The actual use, not the broad label “recycling,” tells you what happened to the material.

The OECD notes that the energy demand and fuel focus of many thermolysis processes make calling them “recycling” controversial. In a theoretical illustration for polyethylene pyrolysis, the OECD estimates an internal energy demand of 1,328 megajoules per kilogram of polyethylene waste for fuel with a calorific value around 40 megajoules per kilogram of waste. This is a theoretical example, not a universal measurement of operating plants. The discussion appears in the 2022 Global Plastics Outlook.
What determines whether a route is workable?
- Polymer and mixture: The chemistry of the target plastic, and whether it is mixed with other polymers, affects which route can handle it.
- Sorting and pretreatment: Collection, separation and contamination control affect the consistency of feedstock. EPA says expanded collection and sorting can improve recyclers’ access to used plastic; its overview says, “Growth in recycling processes could be realized if the nation’s recycling infrastructure (collection and sorting) is expanded to increase access for recyclers to attain used plastic feedstock and recycle it into new products.”
- Output requirements and destination: A monomer, recovered polymer, chemical feedstock and fuel are different products. Their specifications and actual end use matter when judging what a facility produces.
- Energy and environmental effects: A process’s energy use and impacts depend on the specific technology, inputs and outputs. The cited sources do not establish a single, directly comparable lifecycle or cost ranking across mechanical recycling, depolymerization, purification, pyrolysis and gasification.
- Facility and regulatory conditions: Process feasibility, output quality and compliance need to be assessed for the waste stream and jurisdiction in question; a general description of a technology is not proof of a particular facility’s performance.
What do current recycling figures show—and what don’t they show?
Australia’s 2026 national waste and resource recovery report says 3.0 million tonnes of plastic became waste in the 2024–25 reporting year: 13% was recycled, a further 1.9% was used for energy value, and about 86% was sent to landfill. These are Australia-specific figures, not global rates; see the National waste and resource recovery report 2026.

A separate Australian plastics flows report records 512 kilotonnes of recovery for plastic products and packaging in 2024–25: 442 kilotonnes of recycling and 69 kilotonnes of energy recovery. Its recovery rates include pre-consumer and post-consumer material; it lists selected polymer recovery rates of 38% for PET, 21% for HDPE, 18% for PA and 18% for LDPE. These measures have a different scope from the national waste totals, so they should not be substituted for one another. See the Australian plastics flows and fates report 2024–25.

Neither set of figures establishes how much material was chemically depolymerized or whether a particular advanced process is environmentally preferable. EPA says it has not estimated the amount of plastic waste in the industrial waste stream that is recycled. Process-specific claims about emissions, yields or facility performance require evidence for that process and date.
