It is not a separate physical drive, and the image alone is not a complete virtual machine.
How a virtual hard drive works
The host computer stores the disk image on physical storage, such as an SSD or hard drive. Software presents that file as a disk to the host or to a virtual machine. In a virtual machine, the guest operating system sends disk reads and writes through the virtualization software, which redirects them to the image file. Microsoft describes VHD files as disk images, and Oracle explains how VirtualBox redirects guest disk operations to an image.

The image can contain a file system—Microsoft lists NTFS, FAT, exFAT, and UDFS among the possibilities—so the system using it can store and retrieve files in the usual way. The virtual disk is only one component of a virtual machine: running a VM also requires virtualization software and the VM’s configuration and other devices. Mounting a disk image makes its contents available as storage; it does not launch a virtual machine.

VHD, VHDX, VDI, and VMDK: what the names mean
These extensions identify disk-image formats, not a guarantee that every program can open them. Check the documentation for the operating system or hypervisor that will use the image.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- VHD (.vhd): Microsoft’s virtual hard disk format, which stores a disk in a file for use as a virtual disk.
- VHDX (.vhdx): Microsoft’s newer VHD format, designed for modern storage configurations. Microsoft recommends VHDX in its Windows management guide.
- VDI and VMDK: Other formats listed in Oracle’s VirtualBox documentation. VirtualBox supports VDI, VMDK, and Microsoft’s VHD, but support in one product does not establish universal compatibility.
How virtual disks use storage space
The format and the disk’s allocation type are separate choices: the allocation type describes how the backing file uses host storage, while the format describes how the virtual disk is represented. For VHDX, Microsoft documents three allocation types:
- Fixed: The host file is allocated to the virtual disk’s full configured size. That space can be occupied even when the virtual disk contains less user data.
- Dynamic: The host file starts smaller and grows as data is written, up to its configured virtual capacity. The guest-visible capacity is therefore not the same as the file’s current size on the host.
- Differencing: The child image stores changed blocks relative to a parent image. It relies on that parent, so keep the parent and child chain together when moving or backing up the disk.
Microsoft’s VHDX specification documents these types. The exact options available when creating a disk depend on the software you use.

How to create, attach, or detach a VHD in Windows
Microsoft’s Disk Management guide covers Windows 10, Windows 11, and listed Windows Server releases. The documented procedure requires administrative privileges. In Disk Management, creating a VHD involves choosing its location and file name, setting its virtual capacity, and selecting fixed or dynamically expanding allocation; Microsoft says the VHD is initialized when created. For the exact controls and sequence, use Microsoft’s VHD management instructions.
Attach an existing image
In Disk Management, choose Action > Attach VHD, then select the existing VHD file. Attaching makes the disk available to Windows for disk and file operations.

Detach an image without deleting it
In Disk Management, right-click the VHD’s disk entry and choose Detach VHD. Detaching makes the disk unavailable to Windows; it does not delete the VHD file or its data. To remove the image itself, you would have to delete its backing file separately, taking care not to delete a file you still need.

Microsoft describes VHDX as optimized for modern storage hardware. A separate Microsoft overview for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 states that VHDX supports capacity up to 64 TB and describes metadata logging, alignment improvements for large-sector disks, and trim-related efficiency. That 64 TB figure belongs to that historical, platform-scoped documentation; it is not a universal capacity limit or a guarantee for every current operating system, hypervisor, or deployment. Check the documentation for the software and version you actually plan to use. Microsoft’s Hyper-V overview provides the Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 context.
