Video game soundtracks build tension by shaping atmosphere, musical materials and timing around what is happening in the game. Composers may use ominous ambience, dissonance, repetition or changes in texture and rhythm—but no single scale, instrument or musical trick guarantees suspense. In interactive games, the score must also shift with play and work reliably in the game’s runtime mix.
Start with the dramatic purpose
A composer first needs to know what kind of tension a scene should create: uncertainty, anticipation, approaching danger or immediate peril. Those are different dramatic jobs, and the music can change as the scene moves from one to another. A session on building suspense in Homefront and God of War focuses on creating a high-tension game score, while GDC’s adaptive-music session identifies texture, melody, harmony, rhythm and form as materials composers can shape. Neither source presents a fixed recipe for suspense.

Shape the sound, not just the notes
Use atmosphere to suggest a threat
Music can make an environment feel ominous without literally reproducing its sounds. Composer Winifred Phillips describes this approach as shaping sound to evoke atmosphere rather than requiring realism or a specific source. An unsettling musical layer can function like a clue: it hints that something is wrong before the player sees the danger. In a Game Developer interview, Phillips describes such suspense as escalating “until the monster lurches out of the shadows and strikes.”

Use dissonance and repetition as colors
Dissonant intervals and repeated clusters can make musical material feel less settled. Phillips illustrates the idea in her article on creepy clusters: repeated dissonant sounds can transform the character of a cheerful musical idea into something more tense. This is a compositional option, not a universal rule or a measured guarantee of how listeners will respond.
Control how musical elements evolve
Texture, melody, harmony, rhythm and form give a composer several ways to create or release pressure. A cue might grow denser, alter its rhythmic activity, change its harmonic character or withhold a melodic resolution. The useful choice depends on the dramatic purpose and the surrounding gameplay; the cited GDC session offers these elements as a framework, not a ranked list of techniques.
Let the score respond to gameplay
Unlike a fixed film scene, gameplay can change pace or order. A player may move from exploration into danger, linger in a risky area or encounter a threat that escalates. The music may therefore need to move from a restrained state toward something larger or more foreboding as peril increases. Phillips describes this kind of shift in the Game Developer interview; the transition should feel intentional and support the emotion the game is seeking.

Adaptation is part of composition, not merely a technical layer added after the score is written. As musical material changes with play, the composer must consider whether the shifts preserve continuity and feel like parts of one score. GDC’s adaptive-music session addresses that relationship between changing material and musical integrity.
Make implementation part of the composition process
A finished recording does not automatically become an effective interactive score. Music has to be connected to gameplay, prepared for the game’s runtime mixing system and tested across different circumstances. GDC’s 2006 session on implementing an adaptive, live orchestral soundtrack describes those tasks as at least as important—and difficult—as composing the music itself. Its date makes it useful for the durable production principle, not as evidence of current middleware products or workflows.
That session follows a production path from concept and composition through recording and implementation, and describes trade-offs among budget, schedule and creative ambition. In practice, the score’s intended dramatic changes need to survive the handoff into the game: the transitions should occur when gameplay calls for them, and the combined layers should behave properly in the runtime mix. Testing under different conditions is how teams check that the interactive design works beyond the composer’s original cue sequence.

Define whether the cue should create uncertainty, anticipation, approaching danger or immediate peril.
- What changes in play should change the music? Identify the gameplay shifts that call for a different musical state.
- Does the music remain coherent as it changes? Consider whether new layers or materials preserve continuity rather than sounding arbitrary.
- Can the implementation deliver the intended result? Account for runtime mixing, testing, budget and schedule alongside the creative ambition.
