A video link may point to one downloadable media file—or to a player that assembles a stream from a manifest and many smaller media segments. That difference explains why a video can play in a browser without appearing as a single file you can save.
What a video link can point to
A link is an address, not a guarantee that the video exists as one finished MP4. Depending on how the site serves its content, the link may lead directly to a media resource, or it may open a webpage whose player finds and requests the video another way.

- Direct media resource: The address identifies a media file that a browser or another supported client may be able to request as a single resource.
- Player page: The address identifies a webpage. Its player may make additional requests to locate and play the media.
- Streaming manifest: The player may use a manifest—a file describing available media segments and playback details—and request the segments it needs.
Apple’s documentation describes HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) as delivering audio and video over HTTP, with an M3U8 playlist usable as a video source. MDN explains that HLS and MPEG-DASH manifests identify media segments and provide relevant playback information. What happens after you click
The browser or player makes HTTP requests to obtain the page or media. With a direct file, a request may retrieve the media resource itself. With adaptive streaming, the player can retrieve a manifest, choose among the available playback options, and request media segments in sequence. The precise sequence depends on the site and its player; a link does not reveal it by itself.

- The browser opens the destination. It may display a webpage, hand a media URL to a player, or request a media resource directly.
- The player identifies the playback source. That may be a single media file or a manifest describing a stream.
- For a segmented stream, the player requests the listed media pieces. It uses the manifest’s information to select and play the available segments.
- The player presents the result. Playback can be smooth even though the browser has received multiple responses rather than one complete file.
MDN’s guide to the HTML video element explains the browser’s video element and media sources. Playback support and the ability to save a stream as one file are different capabilities.

These are process differences, not a ranking of download tools. Apple documents HLS delivery over HTTP and M3U8 playlists; MDN describes manifest-based adaptive streaming; yt-dlp’s FAQ and documentation describe service-dependent request context, protocol support, and merging separate formats.

Why a playing video may not download as one file
Playback does not prove that the browser has been given a standalone file. For an adaptive stream, the player can assemble playback from manifest-listed segments. The browser may not expose those pieces as one obvious download, and a separate downloader has to understand the stream arrangement and protocol.
Some services also make audio-only and video-only formats available separately. In that case, obtaining a complete audiovisual file can require downloading both formats and combining them. The yt-dlp documentation describes format selection and merging with FFmpeg. The appropriate output depends on the formats provided by the service; the presence of a playable stream does not guarantee a particular file format or a one-step download.

Why a separate downloader may need the original request context
A media address copied from a page may work only in the context of the session that obtained it. Depending on the service, requests may need to come from the same IP address and include the same cookies or HTTP headers. These are service-dependent conditions, not universal requirements for every video URL. The yt-dlp FAQ explains that an extracted video URL may require the original request context.
This is why copying a media URL into another browser or device can fail even when the video played on the original page. The address may have expired, or the service may expect session information to accompany the request. A downloader that supports the relevant protocol and can make the necessary requests may handle the stream differently from a browser’s ordinary download action. Browser playback alone does not establish that a browser supports the protocol as a direct download.

What to do if you are allowed to save the video
- Check the service’s own options. Use an official download or offline-viewing feature when one is available.
- Confirm permission. Save the video only where you have permission to do so. Applicable rules and service terms vary; the technical behavior described here does not determine what is permitted in a particular region or under a particular service’s terms.
- Identify what the link opens. A direct media resource, player page, and adaptive-stream manifest are different starting points. A working player is not proof of a single-file download link.
- If using a permitted downloader, check its documented support. Confirm that it supports the site’s stream protocol and any separate audio and video formats it may need to combine.
