UV patterns on flower petals may help shape the bacteria living there, but a 2021 study did not show that petal “windows” universally change total microbial abundance. Instead, it found that bacterial growth and UV tolerance varied by position along the petals of one plant species, while a second species with uniform UV patterning did not show the same positional pattern.
What the study examined
Hayes, Rebolleda-Gómez, and colleagues studied bacteria on the ray petals of two co-flowering plants in the Asteraceae family: Helianthus tuberosus and Verbesina alternifolia. They characterized bacterial communities using culture-independent methods, then isolated bacteria and tested functional traits, including growth and tolerance to ultraviolet (UV) exposure. The paper was first published on February 3, 2021, in MicrobiologyOpen.

The plants differed in petal UV patterning. H. tuberosus petals varied in UV absorption along their length; V. alternifolia petals had a more uniform pattern. The paper does not establish “petal windows” as a formal scientific term.

In H. tuberosus, bacterial growth rate declined with position along the petal. Isolates collected from the UV-absorbing base had lower UV tolerance than isolates from the UV-reflecting tip. The researchers did not find a comparable positional pattern in V. alternifolia.

The communities on the two host plants were broadly similar; differences were associated with rare, phylogenetically distant taxa. The study’s abstract also reports that 75% of bacterial families were represented in the culturable epiphyte community. That figure describes these study samples, not flower microbiomes in general.
What the results do—and do not—show
The results are consistent with environmental filtering: conditions that differ across a petal may favor bacteria with different traits in different locations. As the authors put it, “Important bacterial functional traits, such as growth and UV tolerance, varied along the ray petal length, illustrating for the first time that the function of the microbiome varies at the within-petal level.”

That finding is about the spatial distribution of bacterial traits, not proof that UV patterning alone caused every difference. Nor does it establish that petal patterns reliably increase or decrease the total number of microbes. The study compared two plant species and found a positional pattern in one, not a universal rule for flowers.
Why the distinction matters
A flower can host bacteria with different characteristics in different places without having more bacteria overall. To claim that a petal feature changes abundance, researchers would need direct evidence about microbial counts and a basis for attributing those changes to the feature. The reported results instead show that the growth and UV tolerance of cultured isolates varied by petal position in H. tuberosus.
