The result was a materials-science experiment—not a consumer gel or a demonstrated wound treatment.
How did UV light make the peptides gel?
The system centered on MAX7CNB, a designed peptide fitted with a light-sensitive photocage. While the cage was attached, the peptide remained unfolded in water and could not self-assemble. Irradiation removed the cage; the uncaged peptide then folded into amphiphilic β-hairpins and assembled into a hydrogel. The study reports irradiation in the 260–360 nm range. The primary study in the Journal of the American Chemical Society describes this sequence as triggered folding and self-assembly.

In the paper’s experiment, a 2 wt % solution of the photocaged starting material was freely soluble and had the viscosity of water before irradiation. The resulting gel had a reported storage modulus, G′, of 1000 Pa. Those measurements describe this specific formulation and experiment, not a general specification for peptide gels.
What did the researchers find about cells?
The team seeded NIH 3T3 fibroblasts onto the gel surface and examined them with laser-scanning confocal microscopy. In that assay, the surface was described as noncytotoxic, supportive of cell adhesion, and permissive of migration. A thymidine-incorporation assay found cell proliferation at a rate equivalent to that on a tissue-culture-treated polystyrene control. The PubMed abstract summarizes these laboratory findings.
#1 Best Overall
- MOISTURE-ENRICHED GEL FOR QUICKER HEALING: This hydrogel wound gel uses hydroxyethyl cellulose and glycerin to keep wounds hydrated while absorbing excess fluids. It creates the perfect environment for healing wounds like diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, and surgical incisions.
- PROTECT AGAINST DRYNESS AND BACTERIA: The hydrogel forms a protective layer to shield wounds from dehydration and bacterial exposure, helping reduce infection risk. This wound gel is ideal for first and second-degree burns, cuts, or abrasions.
- SOOTHING RELIEF FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Oil-free hydrogel for cooling and soothing relief from pain. This wound gel is great for delicate wounds, like post-surgical sites. Ensure comfort and prevent irritation during recovery.
- VERSATILE WOUND CARE FOR MULTIPLE INJURIES: Enhanced with allantoin and schizophyllan to promote cell growth, this hydrogel aids in removing necrotic tissue and speeds healing of partial and full-thickness wounds, from minor cuts to chronic skin ulcers.
- VIVE GUARANTEE: 30-day guarantee so you can purchase with confidence.
These tests involved cells on the gel surface. They do not establish that cells can be safely encapsulated inside it, that the material heals wounds in people, or that it is clinically safe.
Was this a wound treatment?
No clinical treatment was demonstrated in the study. A contemporaneous Chemistry World report from 23 November 2005 discussed possible relevance to tissue engineering and wound treatment, while noting that the team was then trying to develop a version that could incorporate cells within the gel. These were prospective applications and a reported research direction, not evidence of a completed therapy.

- Instant cooling to relieve minor burns - When the hydrogel wound dressing comes into contact with the burned skin, it quickly absorbs and disperses the heat released from the burn area, helping to reduce pain in the burn wound.
- Keep the wound moist to promote healing - The moist environment of burn bandages promote cell regeneration, keep the wound surface moist and relieves pain, which accelerates wound healing.
- Sterile & hypoallergenic - The burn dressing is sterile and latex-free, which effectively reduces the risk of wound infection. It is suitable for people with sensitive skin and provides safe care for wounds.
- Essential for home first aid kit - 4X4 inch hydrogel burn pads are suitable for minor burns, scald blisters, cuts, abrasions and other superficial wounds. Especially for burns caused by daily cooking, steam burns, and hot water burns, hydrogel burn dressings can provide effective help.
- Application steps - Gently apply the moist side and cover the burn or wound. Burn bandage can be covered again with a transparent dressing to strengthen the fixation. The wound dressing is for single use only.
Corresponding author Joel P. Schneider described the material this way: “The hydrogel created from this novel peptide is quite rigid,” as quoted in the Chemistry World report.

How does this approach differ from conventional photopolymerization?
The paper contrasts its strategy with conventional photopolymerization approaches that may use photoinitiators and functionalized macromolecular precursors. Here, light removed a cage to enable a designed peptide to fold and self-assemble. The study establishes that mechanism in its experimental system; it does not show that the peptide method is clinically better or more broadly useful than other gel-forming methods.

- Hydrate Dry Skin and Slough - Dimora Hydrogel can hydrate the dry wound to improve healing by the active ingredients in wound exudate to soften the necrotic tissue in a longlasterd moist environment created by its oil-free hydrogel, it is gentle for the wounds without any pain
- Useful for Burns and Painful Wounds - Hydrogels can be cooling and soothing effect on the skin, which is effective in slight burns, Essentials for a seaside vacation sunburn and some painful wounds
- Professional Care for Elderly - Perfect for elderly care of chronic diseases and daily care of the pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers with slight exudation
- More Flexible for Any Positions - Dimora Hydrogel dressings conforms to the irregular contours of a wound bed and the tiny position, such as cracked fingers and nails gap, tightly fit the joints to support substantial exercise and your little one have fun
- Must Read - Infected wounds should be inquired by doctor before use. It is normal for the dressing to bulge and turn white after absorption, It should be changed after it happened. It is not suitable for wounds with a large amount exudate
What is known about MAX7CNB today?
The cited paper and 2005 news report document the experiment and its original context, but do not establish whether this exact MAX7CNB system later entered clinical development or commercial use. The result is best understood as a research demonstration of light-triggered peptide assembly.
