For a typical one-time payment, the customer checks the payee and amount, then authorizes the transaction using the method supported by their app and bank—usually a UPI PIN. An AI agent may be able to help prepare or explain a payment, but the available NPCI materials do not establish blanket authority for a general-purpose AI agent to approve new UPI payments on its own.
How do UPI payments work?
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) over IMPS infrastructure. It lets people transfer money between bank accounts using participating apps. UPI supports person-to-person transfers and payments to merchants, as well as collection requests. It is not a wallet balance by default: a UPI payment generally moves money from a linked bank account.

A payer can select a payee by using a UPI ID, scanning a QR code, or using other bank and account identifiers supported by the app. The exact screens vary by app, but a typical one-time payment follows this sequence:
- Select the recipient: Choose a payee, scan a merchant’s QR code, or enter supported payment details.
- Enter or confirm the amount: Check that the amount is the one you intend to pay.
- Review the transaction: Verify the recipient and payment details before proceeding.
- Authorize in the app: Use the authentication method supported for that payment flow, commonly the UPI PIN.
NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. That makes checking the recipient and amount before authorization especially important.

Does UPI need a PIN?
Typical one-time payments
NPCI describes the UPI PIN as a user-created, 4–6 digit passcode used to authorize bank transactions. For ordinary UPI functionality, the PIN is the transaction-authentication factor, subject to the documented exceptions and newer optional method below. NPCI’s FAQ says not to share the PIN with anyone.
Optional on-device biometrics
In a circular dated 7 October 2025, NPCI introduced optional on-device biometric authentication, such as fingerprint or face authentication, in lieu of the UPI PIN. The circular describes an initial limit of up to ₹5,000 per transaction. This is not a universal replacement for the PIN: availability depends on implementation by the customer’s app and bank, as well as device and security validation. Where offered, biometrics still involve a customer-controlled approval action.

UPI Lite
NPCI identifies UPI Lite as an exception to the ordinary UPI-PIN authentication pattern. The exception does not make every UPI transaction PIN-free; the applicable flow depends on the feature being used and the customer’s app and bank.

Can UPI AutoPay deduct money automatically?
A mandate is a payment instruction set up in advance with defined terms and a lifecycle. It can allow a later payment to be executed according to that prior instruction; that is different from an AI independently inventing or approving a new payment.

NPCI’s IPO example illustrates the distinction: a customer receives a block-mandate request and enters a UPI PIN, after which funds are blocked pending allotment or release. For recurring e-mandates within the framework described in an RBI circular, a pre-debit notification is required at least 24 hours before the actual charge or debit. The mandate’s terms and applicable flow determine what happens at execution, so a later mandate debit should not be assumed to involve the same fresh approval prompt as a new one-time payment.
| Payment path | What authorizes it | When authorization happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time UPI payment | Usually the UPI PIN; optional on-device biometrics may be available in supported implementations | When the customer initiates the payment | Confirm the recipient and amount before authorizing; NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. |
| UPI Lite | NPCI identifies it as an exception to the ordinary UPI-PIN pattern | According to the UPI Lite flow enabled in the app | Check the app’s flow and which payment source is being used. |
| Mandate execution | A previously authorized mandate, subject to its terms and applicable process | At a later execution point; it need not use the same fresh prompt as a new one-time payment | Review the mandate and applicable notifications, including the RBI framework for recurring e-mandates. |
Can an AI agent make or authorize a UPI payment?
An AI agent may be able to help with tasks such as finding a payee, entering an amount, explaining transaction details, or navigating an app—but only where the app permits those actions. Helping prepare a payment is not the same as authorizing it.

The available NPCI materials describe authentication controls and the roles of the participating app and bank; they do not establish blanket independent UPI payment authority for general-purpose AI agents. An agent’s access to an app, ability to infer a user’s intent, or preparation of payment details does not by itself establish that it can approve a new transaction. For a one-time payment, the supported flow still depends on the customer’s app and bank authentication and approval requirements. A mandate is different: it is a prior instruction that can govern a later execution, not proof that an AI may create new payment authority.
