Gears of War: E-Day is the franchise’s first Unreal Engine 5 game, and its announced visual feature set includes Lumen, MegaLights and Nanite. Xbox has also announced several PC upscaling and performance technologies, but it has not published verified final PC requirements or independent launch-build benchmarks in the sources available as of October 3, 2026. That means the technology can be explained, but a specific PC’s frame rate cannot yet be predicted reliably.
What Unreal Engine 5 features are in E-Day?
The Coalition and Xbox identify Lumen, MegaLights and Nanite as important parts of Gears of War: E-Day’s visual technology. Epic describes the game’s use of Lumen for lighting and Nanite for film-quality assets; Xbox says E-Day is among the first games to ship with MegaLights. These are descriptions of the game’s technology, not independent performance measurements. Epic’s interview with The Coalition and Xbox’s E-Day announcement describe the features.

Lumen: lighting that responds to the environment
Lumen is the game’s global-illumination technology: it is intended to make light and indirect illumination respond across the environment, supporting E-Day’s dramatic shifts between darkness and light. NVIDIA describes E-Day’s Lumen implementation as ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. Neither source supplies a measured frame-rate cost or a controlled comparison showing how much better it looks than a different lighting mode. NVIDIA’s feature overview explains its characterization of the implementation.

MegaLights: more dynamic light and shadow
Xbox connects MegaLights to dynamic shadows and the game’s horror-tinged use of light and dark. NVIDIA says the implementation can render ray-traced shadows from up to 100 light sources. That “up to” figure is NVIDIA’s description, not an independently verified count for every scene or a performance benchmark. NVIDIA’s overview provides the vendor’s figure.

Nanite: detailed assets and environments
Nanite is Unreal Engine’s system for rendering highly detailed geometry. NVIDIA claims E-Day’s Nanite raises object detail and fidelity by up to 100X compared with Gears 5. Separately, Kate Rayner, then Studio Technical Director at The Coalition, told Xbox Wire in 2024 that E-Day would have “over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5.” These are developer and vendor comparisons, not a universal measurement of every asset or a promise of a particular image-quality or frame-rate gain. The Xbox Wire interview gives Rayner’s statement; NVIDIA’s overview gives its separate claim.
Destruction, effects and set pieces
NVIDIA also attributes real-time destruction, broader volumetric effects and particles, and larger set pieces to E-Day’s engine advances. Those descriptions help explain the intended scope of the visuals, but the cited material does not quantify their hardware costs.
What PC graphics and performance options has Xbox announced?
Xbox describes E-Day as built on Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12, with hardware ray tracing and PC optimization. Its July 2026 announcement lists NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Super Resolution and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, NVIDIA Reflex, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, Intel XeSS, and Advanced Shader Delivery on supported PC storefronts and systems. Xbox’s PC feature announcement is the source for this announced feature set.

- Upscaling: DLSS Super Resolution, FSR, TSR and XeSS are announced options for rendering at a lower internal resolution and reconstructing the image. Which is available depends on hardware and support in the game.
- Frame generation: Xbox lists DLSS Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. Its presence does not establish a particular frame rate, image quality or latency in E-Day.
- Latency: NVIDIA Reflex is announced, but no measured input-latency result is published in the cited material.
- Shader delivery: Xbox says Advanced Shader Delivery can reduce load times and eliminate first-run shader stutter on compatible systems. This is the publisher’s stated effect, not an independently measured result.
- Ray tracing: Hardware ray tracing is announced, but the sources do not specify a game-wide performance cost or a GPU recommendation.
There is not yet a supported basis to rank the upscalers, say which gives the best image, estimate frame rates, or identify the best-value GPU. A meaningful comparison would need to test image quality, frame rate with and without frame generation, latency, hardware compatibility, and loading or first-run shader behavior on the released game.
What performance target has Xbox stated?
Xbox’s June 2026 product description says E-Day is “Built for modern performance with 4K resolution and up to 60FPS across Campaign and Multiplayer.” This is Xbox’s stated product target, not a benchmark guaranteeing 4K at 60 frames per second on every PC, in every scene, or with every graphics setting. The announcement does not establish equivalent performance across PC configurations. Xbox’s announcement states the target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do the Unreal Engine hardware guidelines tell you what PC you need?
No. Epic’s UE5.8 documentation lists graphics-card families compatible with engine rendering features including Lumen and MegaLights: AMD RX 6000-series or newer, Intel Arc A-series or newer, and NVIDIA RTX 2000-series or newer. This is engine-feature compatibility guidance, not an E-Day minimum requirement, recommended specification, or assurance of a particular resolution or frame rate. Epic’s hardware and software specifications cover the engine, not E-Day’s game-specific requirements.

Are E-Day’s final PC requirements known?
Not in the official material cited here. The E-Day open-beta FAQ, published August 3, 2026, explicitly says the beta specifications are not the launch specifications and that final specifications would be provided ahead of launch. Do not treat beta specs as final requirements. As of October 3, 2026, Xbox’s announced October 6 launch is still upcoming, and the cited sources do not establish verified final PC minimum or recommended requirements or independent launch-build tests. The official beta FAQ states that its PC specifications are not final. Epic’s general engine guidelines do not fill that gap.
What to check when the PC version is available
Once final requirements and launch-build testing are available, use them rather than extrapolating from UE5 feature support or the console-oriented target. For a useful PC comparison, look for results that specify the GPU, CPU, resolution, graphics settings and upscaling mode, and that separate frame-generation results from rendered frame rate. Also check whether the test reports latency and whether Advanced Shader Delivery applies to the storefront and system being used.
