In Figma, use version history to preserve meaningful design states, compare changes before handoff, and agree on which version is approved for implementation. For shared libraries, add a review and release process so updates do not surprise teams using the system.
What UI version control helps a team track
A version history is more than an archive. It helps answer practical questions: How do we track changes to a UI? What changed in a Figma design? Which design is the latest approved version? A useful record connects each meaningful state to its contributor, date, purpose, and review or release status.
Figma’s Help Center says, “Figma saves your work by adding checkpoints to the file’s version history.” Checkpoints help preserve work, but they do not necessarily explain why a change was made. Named versions and concise descriptions provide that context. Figma’s version-history guide describes the history and its use.
How to build a useful version-history workflow
1. Save named versions at decision points
Let automatic checkpoints cover routine work, then save a named version when the team reaches a meaningful milestone: review, approval, handoff, or release. Figma says it records an autosave checkpoint every 30 minutes; that is not a substitute for a human-readable milestone label.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Use a short, consistent label, such as “Ready for review” or “Approved for build,” and describe what changed and why. Add a ticket or milestone reference when it will help someone trace the decision later. Figma’s current help guidance says titles longer than 25 characters are clipped and recommends descriptions under 140 characters for at-a-glance reading. Version records can include a unique ID, UTC creation time, label, description, and creating user, according to the Figma REST API documentation.
2. Compare before handing work to developers
Before implementation begins, compare the approved design with the state developers are inspecting. Figma Dev Mode’s Compare changes view can identify edited, added, and deleted layers, show versions side by side or as an overlay, and expose changed properties and generated code. This makes the scope of a change clearer than a message that simply says “updated.” See Figma’s Compare changes guide.

Record intentional differences between the approved design and implementation—for example, a platform constraint or a change made after approval—so the next reviewer does not mistake them for accidental drift. Dev Mode is described by Figma as a workspace for inspecting design properties, code, assets, comparisons, and handoff. Its current documentation says it is available on paid plans and requires a Full or Dev seat; confirm current plan and seat requirements with Figma before budgeting. Figma’s Dev Mode guide explains the workspace and handoff features.
3. Make shared-library changes reviewable
When components or foundations are used across teams, avoid changing the shared source without a visible review path. Figma’s design-system training describes working on a branch, reviewing proposed changes, and merging approved work into the main system. This keeps a proposal separate from the version consumers currently rely on. Figma states that branching and merging are available on Organization and Enterprise plans; check current eligibility before choosing a plan. Figma’s branching and merging guidance covers this workflow.

Pair review with a changelog. For each release, state what is new, what changed, what was fixed, and the version identifier. A consistent version scheme gives teams a stable reference for tickets, review discussions, and implementation notes.
4. Set governance that matches the team
There is no single ownership model for every design system. Figma describes centralized, federated, and hybrid governance. A practical hybrid arrangement can give a core group ownership of foundations and shared tokens while product teams propose or maintain local patterns within written guardrails. Clarify who owns each layer, who can propose changes, which changes need review, and where decisions are recorded. Figma’s governance guidance discusses the models.

- History and recovery: How far back are versions retained, and can a team view, copy, or restore an earlier state? Figma describes Starter/Drafts history as limited to 30 days; retention and access differ by plan, so check the current help page for the team’s plan. Figma version history.
- Context: Can reviewers identify the contributor, timestamp, purpose, ticket, and milestone? Figma’s API documentation describes the fields available in a version record.
- Visibility: Can reviewers see changed layers and inspect property or code differences, rather than relying on memory? Compare changes in Dev Mode.
- Isolation and approval: Can teams propose and review a change without silently altering the shared library? Figma branching and merging.
- Design-to-code connection: Does the workflow connect design states with tickets, components, and implementation tools? Figma lists Jira, Storybook, and GitHub among Dev Mode integrations. Figma Dev Mode.
- Access and cost: Who can view, label, restore, or approve versions, and which plan and seat entitlements are needed? Verify the current plan details with Figma before relying on feature availability.

Capture an interface as a visual checkpoint
Design-file history explains how a design evolved; a browser screenshot can preserve how a page actually rendered at a particular point. That can help document a release, compare a live interface with its approved design, or attach a visual reference to a review. A screenshot is a record of the rendered page, not a replacement for editable design history or a changelog.
For repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request, and its options include full-page capture, selector-based capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, viewport and device settings, wait conditions, and hiding selected elements. See ScreenshotNeo for the service details.
Or skip the browser setup
Use a single request to capture a URL. Get an API key first, then substitute it for YOUR_API_KEY; the endpoint parameters and options are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
