An overseas handheld console is not automatically a bargain, and an “international warranty” label does not guarantee repair service in the United States. Since August 29, 2025, covered shipments valued at $800 or less from any country generally cannot use the former de minimis duty-free treatment. Customs charges depend on the shipment’s value, country of origin and other factors, while warranty service depends on the exact model, original sales region and the manufacturer’s terms.
Before ordering, calculate the complete landed cost, identify who will handle entry and duty payment, and obtain written confirmation that the manufacturer will service that specific regional model in the United States. Those checks matter more than the seller’s advertised price.

Import rules and warranty rules are separate decisions
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) decides how an incoming console is treated at the border: whether an entry is required, what duties or fees may apply, and whether other government requirements must be satisfied. The manufacturer decides whether it will repair or replace the device, in which country, for how long and under what conditions.

A package can clear customs and still be refused warranty service. Conversely, a manufacturer may offer international service while customs charges still make the purchase more expensive than a domestic unit. Evaluate both tracks independently.

What changed for low-value console shipments
The former $800 de minimis assumption no longer works
CBP’s mailed-goods guidance says that, effective August 29, 2025, covered shipments from all countries valued at $800 or less are no longer eligible for duty-free treatment under the de minimis provision in 19 U.S.C. § 1321(a)(2)(C). International mail is included in that guidance. A low-value handheld parcel can therefore be subject to applicable duties, taxes and fees.
This is not a single “handheld-console rate.” CBP says assessment depends on factors including the declared value and country of origin. The product’s tariff classification and the facts of the transaction also matter. No reliable total can be calculated from the console’s retail price alone.
Do not confuse country of shipment with country of origin
A seller may dispatch a console from a warehouse in one country even though the device was manufactured or substantially transformed in another. Ask for the product’s country of origin and keep the seller’s answer with your invoice. Origin can affect the customs assessment; the shipping address by itself does not establish it.
“Free shipping” is not the same as prepaid import costs
A listing can include transportation to the United States while leaving duties, taxes, brokerage or carrier disbursement fees to the recipient. Ask whether the quoted price is delivered with import charges paid, and ask who is responsible if CBP or the carrier requests additional money. Get the answer in writing before payment.
Entry steps for a personal purchase
Most personal entries are informal, but a filing deadline still applies
CBP’s guidance for personal goods bought overseas and shipped to the United States says the recipient generally must file an entry within five working days after arrival. CBP says a 25-day extension may be requested when the entry cannot be filed within that period.
Personal importations are generally cleared informally, meaning no bond is required. That is a general process description, not a promise that every parcel will be released without additional documentation. The port director can require formal entry for admissibility enforcement, revenue protection or efficient conduct of CBP business.
Documents to retain
- Commercial invoice or seller receipt showing the price, currency, item description and seller.
- Shipping record, bill of lading or air waybill.
- Tracking information and any carrier notice about an entry, hold or payment.
- Evidence of the console’s model, region and country of origin.
CBP’s personal-goods article specifically tells recipients to bring the bill of sale and bill of lading or air waybill for the described entry process. Keep digital and paper copies until the parcel is released and any return or warranty period has ended.
What happens if you do nothing
CBP warns that failing to file an entry can result in transfer to a bonded warehouse and potentially a later public sale. That is a stated procedural consequence, not a prediction that an ordinary console parcel will be sold. If a carrier or CBP sends instructions, respond promptly rather than allowing the deadline to pass.
When formal entry and a broker may be relevant
The $2,500 procedure is a warning threshold, not a universal rule
CBP publishes a formal-entry help article for goods valued at $2,500 or more. It advises contacting the relevant port or import specialist with the commercial invoice, obtaining tariff-classification and duty-rate information, and asking about other requirements. The article does not establish that every shipment above $2,500 receives identical treatment, nor that shipments below that value can never require formal entry.

A high-priced multi-unit order, a commercial purchase, a shipment with classification questions or a transaction CBP selects for additional review can require more work than a normal personal parcel. Ask the port or carrier which procedure applies to your specific shipment.
A customs broker is conditional help
CBP describes licensed customs brokers as people who can handle paperwork and arrange a bond in the formal-entry process, for an additional fee. A broker is not an automatic requirement for every consumer buying one console. Consider one when the carrier says formal entry is required, the value or classification is uncertain, or you cannot complete the requested filing yourself.

Confirm the broker’s fee, who remains responsible for the accuracy of the entry and whether the fee includes duty advances or carrier charges. A broker can explain a transaction; it cannot turn an ineligible product or an unpaid duty into a duty-free shipment.
Product safety and admissibility still apply
Import treatment is not limited to collecting money. Federal law provides for refusing admission of covered consumer products that fail applicable consumer-product safety requirements or lack required certificates or labels. This is a general statutory requirement, not evidence of a blanket prohibition on ordinary handheld consoles.
Do not assume a special permit is required without device-specific evidence. Instead, buy from a seller able to identify the exact model and provide ordinary product documentation. If CBP, a carrier or another agency asks for information, follow that agency’s instructions for the particular shipment.
Build the real landed-cost comparison
Compare a domestic and an overseas offer using the same cost categories. The available guidance does not establish a universal duty rate or current price for a named console, so any precise savings claim without a classification and origin determination would be speculative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Cost or risk | Domestic purchase | Overseas purchase shipped to the U.S. |
|---|---|---|
| Advertised console price | Usually shown in U.S. dollars; verify sales tax and seller fees. | May be converted from another currency; verify exchange-rate and payment fees. |
| Customs duty, tax and carrier charges | Normally built into the retailer’s domestic supply chain. | May be assessed on arrival; the amount depends on value, origin and other factors. No universal rate is established. |
| Entry work | Usually handled before consumer delivery. | Personal entry is generally informal, but CBP states a five-working-day filing period after arrival and allows a possible 25-day extension. |
| Broker fee | Not normally a separate consumer charge. | May apply if formal entry or broker assistance is needed. |
| Return shipping | Often domestic, subject to the retailer’s policy. | Could require international shipping, customs paperwork and another import transaction. |
| Warranty service location | Depends on the seller and manufacturer’s U.S. terms. | Depends on the exact regional model, original market, covered countries and manufacturer approval. |
| Repair parts and turnaround | Ask the manufacturer or seller; not automatically guaranteed. | Parts, procedures, fees and timing can vary by country and may require shipment to the purchase country. |
The overseas option is financially attractive only if the final total remains acceptable after all applicable charges and the support path is workable. Treat an advertised price as an input, not the answer.
How international warranty language really works
Eligibility can depend on two countries and one exact product
ASUS’s international-warranty material for gaming handhelds illustrates the conditions a buyer must verify. Service may be available when both the country where the product was purchased and the country where service is requested appear on the manufacturer’s covered-country list, and when the product has the applicable warranty entitlement.
The same material warns that procedures differ by country, parts may be unavailable, fees or other restrictions may apply, and the service center may require proof of purchase or proof that the product was properly imported. An “international warranty” label therefore does not by itself promise U.S. repair.

Warranty duration is not the same as warranty eligibility
A unit can still be within its stated warranty period yet fall outside the service region, lack acceptable purchase documentation or be a model the U.S. service center does not support. Ask about the exact model number and serial number, not merely the product family name.

Normal-use defects versus customer-induced damage
ASUS’s official ROG Ally customer-induced-damage FAQ, updated December 17, 2024, states: “The warranty only covers technical hardware issues during the Warranty Period and in normal use conditions.” The FAQ lists customer-induced damage exclusions and notes that a chargeable repair may be offered for excluded damage. This describes ASUS’s stated criteria for that product line; it is not a universal rule for every handheld manufacturer.
Water exposure, impact, unauthorized modification, cosmetic damage or misuse may be treated differently from a component that fails during normal use. Read the warranty card supplied with the exact unit and preserve it with the invoice.

- What is the exact model and regional variant? Request the full model number, hardware revision and intended sales market.
- Where was it manufactured and where was it first sold? Country of origin and country of purchase can affect customs and warranty eligibility.
- Does the price include every import charge? Ask specifically about duty, tax, brokerage, carrier disbursement and any delivery surcharge.
- Who is the importer of record? Confirm whether the seller, carrier or you will file entry and pay an assessment.
- Will the manufacturer service this unit in the United States? Send the model, serial number, original-sale country and planned U.S. service location to the manufacturer before buying.
- What documents are required? Confirm acceptable proof of purchase, import records, warranty card and identity information.
- Where does a failed unit go? Ask whether repair must occur in the purchase country, who pays outbound and return shipping, and whether customs paperwork is your responsibility.
- Are parts available locally? A technically valid warranty is less useful if parts are unavailable or the repair must wait for an overseas shipment.
- What is the seller’s return window? A seller return may be the practical remedy for an early failure if manufacturer service is uncertain.
What to do when a shipment is held
First, identify who issued the request
Read the notice from the carrier, CBP or another agency. It should identify the shipment, the missing information and the deadline. Do not send sensitive information through an unrelated link or pay an invoice that cannot be tied to the tracking record.
Then assemble a consistent file
- Invoice matching the payment record.
- Accurate description such as the console model and whether accessories are included.
- Country of origin and country of purchase.
- Air waybill or tracking number.
- Any manufacturer documentation requested for product identification.
Inconsistent values or vague descriptions can delay classification. Never ask a seller to understate the value or misdescribe the product; that can create additional customs and warranty problems.
Escalate when the transaction is beyond a routine parcel
For a formal-entry request, a classification dispute or a high-value order, contact the port, an import specialist or a licensed broker. Ask what filing is required, what information supports the classification and which charges are payable before release. Keep records of every instruction and payment.
Domestic versus overseas: a practical decision framework
Choose domestic supply when support certainty is worth the premium
A domestic purchase is usually easier to return and avoids making you the party responsible for a personal import entry. It may cost more at checkout, but the difference can represent the value of predictable returns, U.S.-based shipping and clearer regional warranty terms.
Consider an overseas unit only after verification
An imported unit can make sense when the model is unavailable domestically or the seller provides a genuinely lower total cost after all charges. Proceed only when you have confirmed the regional model, landed-cost responsibility and a repair route that you would accept before the purchase.
Use a written yes-or-no test
- Can you state the likely total landed cost without assuming duty-free treatment?
- Can you meet the five-working-day entry instruction if CBP requires a filing?
- Can you absorb an international return or repair shipment?
- Has the manufacturer confirmed service eligibility for this exact unit?
- Would you still buy it if a chargeable repair were the only available remedy?
If any answer is no, the apparent discount is not an established saving; it is an unresolved cost or support risk.
A practical decision rule
Price an imported handheld as a customs transaction and a service transaction, not just as an online purchase. Use current CBP instructions for the actual shipment, retain the invoice and transport documents, and obtain model-specific warranty confirmation before payment. The safest comparison is the one that includes the cost of getting the device repaired, returned or replaced—not merely the amount shown on the product page.
