It is not a promise of higher sales, and it does not mean disclosing everything. The practical goal is to give each audience the information it needs to make decisions and a way to ask questions or raise concerns.
How does transparency benefit a business?
Transparency is a deliberate practice of sharing relevant information, the reasons behind decisions, and the trade-offs involved in language stakeholders can understand. Its value depends on usefulness and follow-through, not the volume of information released.

- Customers can assess a product or service with more confidence when a business shares objective information about performance and responds candidly to feedback.
- Employees can better understand organizational priorities and decisions when leaders explain what is changing and why.
- Managers can identify operational problems sooner when people can report concerns safely and expect a fair response.
- Stakeholders can evaluate company practices when disclosures address issues they consider important, such as environmental impact.
These are plausible business benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. A company should connect each transparency effort to a specific decision or risk rather than assume disclosure alone will improve performance.

Customers are more able to judge a business when it provides objective, relevant information instead of relying only on promotional claims. A 2018 Business Horizons study abstract reports that customer-facing performance transparency increased customer trust and willingness to pay. The accessible abstract does not provide methods or effect sizes, so it does not establish a universal sales lift or a predictable return on investment. Read the study abstract.

PwC’s 2024 U.S. survey offers a related but different kind of evidence: 46% of consumers said they purchased more at companies they trust, and 28% said they paid a premium. These are respondents’ reports, not proof that a particular disclosure caused a purchase or premium. In the same survey, 93% of business executives agreed that building and maintaining trust improves the bottom line; that figure reflects executives’ belief, not a measured causal estimate. See PwC’s 2024 survey.
Useful customer-facing transparency answers questions customers actually need to make a choice: what a product does, what its limitations are, how a service performs, or how the company handles feedback. A raw data dump or vague claim of openness does not help customers assess those things.

Why is transparency important for employees?
Employees need context, not simply more announcements. Explaining the reasons for decisions, goals, and workplace practices can make organizational intent easier to understand. Deloitte’s 2024 discussion of workplace transparency emphasizes straightforward sharing of information, motives, and decisions that matter to workers. It also stresses that trust and transparency are related but not interchangeable.

Use workforce data to help workers, not just monitor them
Responsible use of workforce data can inform performance, safety, career development, innovation, and agility, Deloitte says. But the purpose and safeguards matter. Deloitte reports that workers confident their organization uses workforce data responsibly were 35% more likely to trust it; 37% of workers surveyed said they were very confident in responsible use. Those are reported survey relationships, not evidence that data collection by itself produces trust.
Before collecting or sharing workforce data, explain why it is collected, whose data is visible, who can access it, and how it may benefit workers as well as the business. Set limits on use, control access, protect privacy, and give workers input or choice where possible. Transparency that exposes sensitive personal information or turns data into unexplained surveillance can undermine the trust it is meant to support.

How can transparency help with governance and risk?
Internal reporting channels give employees a way to raise suspected misconduct or other concerns. Transparency International says robust reporting mechanisms can help organizations identify misconduct and limit legal, financial, and reputational harm. A reporting channel is a risk-management measure, not a guarantee that every incident will be prevented. It also cannot substitute for fair investigation or management accountability.
Tell employees how concerns are received, who reviews them, and how the organization acts on reports. A channel that collects complaints without a credible response process is not meaningful transparency. See Transparency International’s guidance on internal reporting systems.

What do stakeholders expect businesses to disclose?
PwC’s 2024 U.S. survey suggests a gap between the importance respondents place on environmental disclosures and what executives say their companies disclose. In that survey, 45% of employees and 41% of consumers said environmental-impact disclosure was very important, while 36% of executives said their companies disclose that information. For climate risks, 40% of employees and 39% of consumers said disclosure was very important; 31% of executives said their companies disclose those risks. These figures describe survey responses, not the disclosure practices of every U.S. company or the requirements that apply to a particular business. Review PwC’s survey findings.
The practical implication is to identify which information matters to the audiences a business serves, then make disclosures accurate, understandable, and appropriately timed. Legal disclosure duties vary by jurisdiction and industry; companies should check the current rules that apply to them rather than infer legal obligations from survey results.
How can a business become more transparent?
- Name the audience and decision. Decide whether customers, employees, investors, or another group needs information, and what decision or risk the information should help address.
- Choose relevant, objective facts. Share information that answers that audience’s real questions. Include context and trade-offs rather than presenting figures without explanation.
- Use plain language and appropriate timing. Explain what is known, what is changing, and why. Make the information available when recipients can still use it.
- Build a response process. Give people a way to ask questions, correct errors, or report concerns. Assign responsibility for responding and addressing problems.
- Protect privacy and sensitive information. Limit access to workforce data, define its permitted uses, and avoid disclosing details that could expose people or create avoidable business risks.
- Measure the right outcome. Match the measure to the initiative—for example, whether customers can find performance information or whether employees know how to raise a concern. Trust is not captured fully by satisfaction or engagement scores alone.
Steelcase CEO Sara Armbruster told Deloitte, “In many ways, transparency goes hand in hand with that. But if you are going to advocate and implement a high degree of transparency, you need to have systems in place to address any issues that arise.” The point is practical: openness needs systems that make it safe and worthwhile to respond.

Transparency is not maximal disclosure. Personal or workforce information may require privacy protections; sensitive operational details can create safety or competitive risks. The right approach depends on who needs the information, what decision it supports, whether recipients can act on it, and what harm disclosure could cause.
Before publishing or circulating information, consider its relevance and objectivity, clarity and timing, privacy and competitive sensitivity, the recipient’s ability to respond, and the resources required to keep it accurate. For employee-data initiatives, also consider worker agency, access rules, and whether data supports workers or is used to punish them. If a disclosure cannot be maintained accurately or safely, narrow its scope and explain the limits rather than promising unrestricted openness.
