How Top MSSPs Turn Industry Recognition Into Revenue

MSSP rankings can strengthen a sales story when providers connect recognition to customer value, use it in buyer comparisons, and measure funnel results carefully.

Top managed security service providers (MSSPs) can use rankings and awards to support sales, but recognition is not a revenue formula. It works best as third-party validation of a clear customer-value story: show what the provider does, connect it to outcomes prospects care about, and measure whether the recognition campaign is associated with stronger pipeline or conversion. MSSP Alert’s October 2, 2026 article captures the distinction in Will Lassalle’s advice: “Use it as third-party validation, not as the core sales message.”

What an MSSP ranking actually tells a buyer

Before placing a badge in a proposal, understand what the recognition measures. MSSP Alert’s 2025 Top 250 drew on its ninth annual worldwide MSSP survey, conducted from May through November 2025, as well as editorial coverage and research. Its criteria included annual recurring revenue, profitability, business growth, cyber-professional headcount, managed security services offered, MSSP Alert editorial coverage, and third-party honors from organizations including Gartner, Forrester, IDC, and Canalys. That makes the list a composite signal of commercial scale, business health, service capacity, visibility, and external validation—not a pure measure of customer outcomes. Recognition also depends on the list’s audience and categories. CRN’s 2026 MSP 500 separates providers into the Elite 150, focused on broad on-premises and off-premises portfolios weighted toward midmarket and enterprise; the Pioneer 250, focused largely on SMB managed services; and the Managed Security 100, focused on cloud-based security services and expertise. A provider should explain why a particular ranking is relevant to a prospect rather than treating every “top” label as interchangeable. CRN’s 2026 MSP 500 categories show how much the definition can vary.

MSSP Alert describes its Top 250 as an annual fall snapshot of provider growth, service trends, SOC operations, technology priorities, and customer demand. As of October 3, 2026, its Top 250 page said the 2026 list was available through an event first-look, with its PDF and webcast forthcoming. How to put recognition to work in the sales process

1. Build the customer proof first

Document the outcomes, delivery practices, expertise, and lessons that make the provider valuable to customers. A recognition badge is more credible when it validates a story prospects can already understand; it cannot substitute for the story.

2. Use the credential where buyers compare providers

Include relevant rankings or awards in proposals and RFP responses, where prospects are weighing competing providers and perceived risk. Present the recognition as supporting evidence for a specific capability or trust claim, not as the claim itself.

3. Connect the badge to a customer-relevant outcome

Explain what the service does for a customer and why that matters. For example, a provider might describe its monitoring and response capabilities, then show how its operating model supports the customer’s security and continuity needs. The ranking can lend context to that explanation; it does not demonstrate that a particular customer achieved a particular result.

4. Extend the announcement across channels

Reuse recognition in digital campaigns, sales enablement, customer communications, and thought leadership. Adapt the message to each audience and point it back to customer value instead of simply repeating the award name. Will Lassalle, CIO at JLS Technology USA, put the visibility challenge this way in MSSP Alert’s October 2, 2026 article: “The market cannot recognize what it never sees.”

5. Track funnel movement without claiming causation

Compare qualified inbound opportunities, proposal conversion, sales-cycle velocity, and win rates around a recognition campaign. Treat a change as an observed association unless the provider has credible attribution evidence that isolates the campaign’s effect. MSSP Alert’s article recommends these indicators but reports no controlled evidence or MSSP-wide uplift proving that recognition caused additional revenue.

Why the badge cannot replace delivery

MSSP business models often combine direct service delivery with partner relationships. MSSP Alert’s 2024 report describes MSPs adding security services, tooling and platform providers offering partners SOC-as-a-service, EDR, and MDR, and MSSPs supplying advanced security while an MSP retains the customer relationship. In such arrangements, a provider should be clear about who owns customer communication, which services are delivered by partners, and how responsibilities are governed. A ranking does not establish that a particular provider’s partner model will work for a prospect.

CRN’s 2026 MSP 500 overview describes providers growing organically and through acquisitions, while customers seek guidance and professional services alongside managed operations. Blue Mantis senior vice president of services Adam Caponigro highlighted the governance behind consistent delivery: “But what often gets overlooked is the governance around it like client success managers, security advisers, technical account managers and service desk leadership. All of that is about putting the client at the center and making sure we’re delivering consistently and effectively. We want to be a trusted adviser at every level.” The quote appears in CRN’s 2026 MSP 500 overview.

What industry figures can—and cannot—prove

MSSP Alert and CyberRisk Alliance’s 2024 edition reported that Top 250 survey participants expected approximately 18% year-over-year revenue growth. That was a survey expectation, not an audited realized result and not growth attributed to recognition. The same edition estimated average MSSP revenue at $41.5 million in 2024, compared with $35.1 million in 2023, while warning that very large providers skew the mean. These figures describe the surveyed group and should not be presented as typical-provider revenue or evidence of award-driven growth. The historical report is available as the Top 250 MSSPs 2024 Edition.

That report also said 89% of respondents reported their MSSP business was profitable in 2023, and 92% expected profitability in 2024. Those are survey responses, not universal industry rates or independently audited results. The report’s service menu spans offerings such as managed vulnerability services, incident response, MDR, compliance reporting, security awareness training, fractional CISO services, 24/7 monitoring, XDR/EDR, SOC-as-a-service, firewall management, threat intelligence, cloud posture management, penetration testing, mobile threat defense, backup and disaster recovery, and secure gateways. Service adoption is not itself proof of customer outcomes.

How to assess a recognition program

Providers choosing where to pursue or promote recognition should compare the program with their intended buyers and the evidence they can substantiate. Check:

  • Methodology: What data and criteria determine inclusion or rank?
  • Audience and geography: Does the list reach the customers and regions the provider serves?
  • Category definitions: Is the provider being compared with peers that have a similar service model and target market?
  • Evidence requirements: Does the program rely on provider submissions, surveys, editorial judgment, outside honors, or a combination?
  • Publication cadence: Is the recognition current enough for the sales conversation?
  • Independence of measures: If the ranking considers revenue or growth, do not later treat the ranking itself as independent proof that recognition increased those same measures?

MSSP Alert Live and peer gatherings can also offer occasions to contribute expertise and learn how providers are approaching staffing, automation, AI, delivery, and margins. Their value to a sales process lies in relationships and learning; event participation should not be presented as a guaranteed source of leads or revenue.
