Open the document in the Google Docs app, tap Edit, tap where the text should go, then write with Pencil in the text field. Scribble converts handwriting to typed text; Google Docs does not need a separate Pencil-writing mode for this workflow.
Write editable text with Apple Pencil

Open the Google Docs app on your iPad and sign in. Google says the app can create, view, and edit Google documents and Microsoft Word files. Google Docs on iPhone and iPad.

Open the document, tap Edit, then tap the text location where you want to write. Google’s iPad editing instructions.

Write in the text field with Apple Pencil. Apple describes Scribble this way: “Write with Apple Pencil in any text field, and Scribble automatically converts your handwriting into typed text.” Apple Support: Enter text with Scribble on iPad.

The result is ordinary typed text in the document, rather than a picture of handwriting. Scribble is an iPadOS text-entry feature, not a Google Docs-specific Apple Pencil mode. Apple notes that available actions can vary by app.

On the iPad, open Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble and check that Scribble is enabled.

Make sure you are writing in an active text field in the document, not trying to draw over the page. Scribble converts writing entered in text fields; it does not make handwriting drawn on the page into editable document text.

Choose the right workflow for drawing or feedback
Apple Pencil can serve different purposes in and around a document. These options produce different results and should not be confused with handwriting-to-text entry.

Insert a drawing object
Google community help describes inserting a drawing, choosing Line > Scribble, and selecting Save & Close. This is community guidance dated 2023, not a current official feature guarantee; menu names or availability may differ by app version or platform. Suggest text changes
For review or editorial feedback, Google documents the More > Suggest changes workflow in the iPad app. Suggestions can be accepted or rejected by the document owner. It is a document-review feature, not a Pencil handwriting mode. Google Docs: Suggest changes in a document.
Markup directly over a page
Whether direct Pencil markup over a document page is available in the current Google Docs iOS app is not established by the official product instructions cited here. A Google Docs community product expert said in February 2026 that markup was unavailable, but that is secondary guidance, not a formal or permanent Google specification. Check the current app rather than assuming a universal markup feature.

What to expect

Google supports editing documents in its iPad app, while Apple provides Scribble for handwriting-to-text input in supported iPad text fields.

Compatibility depends on the iPad and Scribble support; do not assume every iPad, language, or app interaction behaves identically.
