How to Write Prompts for Consistent Blog Featured Images

A reusable house-style brief helps keep blog featured images visually coherent while each prompt changes to fit its article. Use this template and workflow to direct, review, and refine results.

For a consistent set of blog featured images, reuse the same short visual brief in every prompt and change only the article-specific scene. Keep the medium, palette, lighting, level of detail, and composition rules stable; vary the subject, action, and setting to fit each post. This improves direction, but it cannot guarantee identical results from one generation to another.

What makes a featured-image prompt consistent?

A useful prompt states what the image is for, what it should show, and how it should look. Treat it as two parts: a reusable house style and a description of the individual article. OpenAI’s image-generation guidance recommends describing the purpose, subject, action, setting, style, and relevant framing or constraints. Its API prompting guide likewise emphasizes visible details rather than relying on vague mood words.

  • Keep stable: visual medium, palette, lighting, texture or detail level, and recurring composition preferences.
  • Change for each post: the main subject, what it is doing, the setting, and details that help communicate that article’s point.
  • Specify as needed: aspect ratio, placement, crop-safe space, and elements to exclude.

These are editorial choices, not a universal best style or a special syntax that guarantees a match. OpenAI notes that effective prompts can be short; use labeled sections when a more complex request benefits from them.

Build a reusable prompt template

Save a house-style brief with your team’s prompt library, then fill in the scene and layout for each article. Keep the style wording consistent instead of reinventing it every time.

Create a [blog featured image / editorial illustration / photo] for an article about [topic]. The image should communicate [reader takeaway].

Scene: Show [main subject] [action] in [setting]. Include [two or three concrete visual details].

House style: Use [medium], [palette], [lighting], and [texture or detail level]. Keep these style choices consistent with the supplied reference image(s), if present.

Composition: Use [aspect ratio or dimensions]. Place [subject] [position]; leave [area] uncluttered for cropping or optional headline placement. Keep the main subject inside the crop-safe area.

Constraints: Preserve [brand or visual traits that must remain]. Do not include [unwanted elements]. Do not render text unless the exact wording is [quoted wording].

This template is a practical synthesis of official prompting guidance, not a required format or model-specific formula. Adapt it to the image generator and publishing destination you actually use.

Example: a home-composting article

Here is one way to fill in the template:

Create a wide editorial illustration for a blog post explaining how home composting works. Show a kitchen counter compost caddy beside a small bowl of vegetable scraps, with a garden planter visible through the window. Use a clean, textured digital illustration style, muted leaf green and warm cream, soft morning light, and restrained detail. Keep the palette, lighting, and simple shapes consistent with our style reference. Use a landscape crop; place the caddy on the right and leave the upper-left area simple. No words, logos, border, or watermark.

This example illustrates the method; it does not promise a particular result in every image tool.

Use references without muddling the brief

If your generator accepts reference images, choose a small, curated set and explain what each one is meant to guide. For example, identify one image as the palette reference and another as the composition reference. Do not assume the tool will infer which qualities to borrow. OpenAI’s guidance on image generation recommends using visual references and making their roles clear.

Generate, inspect, and revise one issue at a time

  1. Write the house-style brief. Record the recurring visual choices your publication wants to maintain.
  2. Fill in the article scene. Name the subject, action, setting, and a few visible details that make the image specific to the post.
  3. Set composition. State the intended shape or aspect ratio, subject placement, and uncluttered space. Use the generator’s controls as well as prompt wording when available.
  4. Review the first result. Compare it with recent featured images for palette, lighting, framing, and visual density.
  5. Make a focused edit. Change one thing at a time. If the scene is right but the style has drifted, ask for the style correction while telling the tool to keep the subject and composition unchanged.
  6. Check the final crop. Preview the asset where it will appear on the site and confirm that the image represents the article accurately.

For edits, OpenAI’s prompting guide advises identifying both what should change and what must stay the same. That distinction helps make revisions more controlled, though it cannot ensure exact placement or recurring brand consistency.

Handle aspect ratios, text, and tool limits carefully

Aspect ratio and crop

Describe the intended shape and leave important content inside a safe area, but check both the generator’s current output options and the site’s actual crop. The OpenAI image-generation documentation lists technical output constraints for its API and models; those limits are not universal blog-image or CMS requirements. Verify current tool capabilities and your publishing theme before choosing export dimensions.

Text inside the image

When exact typography matters, the most reliable instruction may be to keep words out of the generated image and add copy separately in a design or publishing tool. If text must be generated, give the exact wording, location, and appearance, then proofread it. OpenAI’s Academy guidance and image-generation documentation warn that text clarity and placement can remain difficult.

Consistency is directional, not exact repeatability

Repeating a style brief and using references can make outputs easier to steer, but a prompt is not a guarantee that every post will have an identical look. Inspect each image and make targeted revisions; the final result still needs editorial review.

Choosing an image generator for this workflow

No generator is established here as the best choice. Compare candidates on the same sample prompt and reference material, using criteria that match your publishing needs:

  • How well it follows a repeated style brief across different subjects.
  • Whether it accepts reference images and supports targeted edits.
  • How much control it offers over composition and aspect ratio.
  • How it handles text, if you need words in the image.
  • Its current workflow cost and usage limits.

OpenAI’s prompting guide recommends evaluating image quality on the intended workload. Feature availability, plans, and usage rules can change, so confirm them with the provider. Canva’s prompt guidance recommends clear descriptions and notes that its image-generation features use a shared AI allowance.
