How to Write Effective Prompts for AI-Generated Images and Videos

Build clearer prompts by naming the subject, scene and visual style; for video, describe the action and any useful camera movement, then refine from the output.

To get closer to the image or animation you have in mind, describe the subject and the visual details that shape it. For a still image, specify details such as the setting, pose, style, lighting, color and composition. For video, also describe what moves or changes over time; add a camera direction when it matters. Generate a result, identify the biggest mismatch, and revise the prompt or a relevant setting.

These are practical starting points, not a universal syntax. Adobe’s Firefly guidance offers specific examples and controls, but other tools may interpret prompts differently.

What to include in an image prompt

Start with the subject, then add only the details that meaningfully define the result. A useful scaffold is:

Subject + action or pose + setting + visual style + lighting or color + composition

This is a practical way to organize a prompt, not a required formula. For example:

A small red canoe tied to a weathered wooden dock on a misty lake at dawn, quiet documentary photography, cool blue-gray light, wide composition.

The subject and setting establish what is in the image; style, light, color and framing guide how it should look. If mood matters, describe it with concrete terms. Adobe suggests words such as “gentle” and “playful” for a heartwarming image, or “powerful” and “uplifting” for an inspiring one.

Adobe recommends simple, direct descriptions for Firefly and says to use at least three words. That is Firefly-specific advice, not a minimum that applies to every image generator. More words are not automatically better: include details that clarify the intended result, and leave out ones that do not. Adobe’s Firefly image prompt guide was last updated June 16, 2026.

How to describe movement in a video prompt

A video prompt needs to convey both the scene and what changes. Adobe’s suggested Firefly structure is “Shot Type Description + Character + Action + Location + Aesthetic.” In plain terms, establish the shot, identify the main subject, state what it does, say where it happens, and describe the visual style.

Use an observable action verb, adding pace when it affects the shot: “slowly turns,” “runs across,” or “gradually opens.” A prompt might read:

Wide shot of a paper boat drifting slowly down a rain-darkened street gutter at dusk; the camera tracks beside it; soft, storybook animation, amber window light.

A shot size, angle, camera move, time of day or weather cue can help when it serves the idea. For continuity, say what should remain consistent and what should change. For instance, a character might stay in the same outfit while moving from a doorway into a sunlit room.

Keep the scene focused. Adobe advises using four subjects or fewer in Firefly video prompts because a larger number can confuse the system. This is vendor guidance, not a universal limit across video generators. Its video prompting guide was last updated June 9, 2026. Read Adobe’s video prompt guidance.

When to use settings and reference images

Some generators offer controls that can communicate visual intent more directly than text. Depending on the model and workflow, Firefly image generation includes choices such as aspect ratio, content type, style and composition references, and visual intensity. Use a setting or reference when it matches the decision you are trying to control; do not assume every tool offers the same options. Adobe’s image-generation guide and prompt enhancement guide describe Firefly’s available workflows. As of the latter guide’s June 9, 2026 update, prompt enhancement for Firefly Image 4 and Image 4 Ultra is available only for prompts written in English.

For image-to-video workflows, a start image can anchor the opening frame. Where first and end keyframes are available, they can guide a transition, while the text prompt describes what happens between them. Camera options and feature availability depend on the model and workflow. Adobe says Firefly features may also vary by location, user type and regulatory requirements. A practical prompt revision loop

  1. Generate a first version. Begin with the main subject and the details that define the scene.
  2. Find the biggest mismatch. Compare the result with your intent: is the subject wrong, the action unclear, the lighting off, or the framing unsuitable?
  3. Change the relevant instruction or setting. Revise one or a few details—such as pose, location, style, camera movement or light—rather than adding unrelated description.
  4. Generate again and note the change. Keeping track of what you altered makes it easier to see which directions helped.

Adobe recommends iterative refinement for Firefly images and videos. Rewording or adjusting a setting can help address a mismatch, but no specific number of revisions guarantees a particular result.

Common prompt-writing mistakes to avoid

  • Adding detail without a purpose: prioritize details that change the subject, scene, look or motion you want.
  • Leaving motion implicit: for video, state what moves and how it changes rather than relying on a list of visual adjectives.
  • Overloading the scene: too many subjects or competing actions can make the intended focus less clear; Adobe’s four-subject advice applies specifically to Firefly video prompting.
  • Using camera jargon by default: include a shot size, angle or move only if it helps express the intended clip.
  • Assuming special syntax works everywhere: negative prompts, weights, seeds and other controls vary by tool. Confirm that a specific generator supports them before relying on them.
