In the United States, a common way to get cash without an ATM is to request cash back while paying for a purchase with an eligible debit or prepaid card at a participating retailer. Before approving the transaction, check the terminal or ask the cashier about the amount available, any fee, and whether a minimum purchase is required. A post office may offer debit cash back, and a bank teller may be another option; availability and terms vary by location and provider.
Your best choice depends on the card or account you have, whether you are willing to make a purchase, how much cash you need, and whether the nearby provider serves noncustomers. The options below are primarily U.S.-focused. Retailer policies, branch services, postal arrangements and issuer terms can change, so confirm the details at the point of use.

Choose the option that fits your card and location
The right method depends on what you have with you, whether you are willing to make a purchase, and which providers nearby serve your account or card. The table compares the main options documented for the United States.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | What you need | Purchase required? | Limits and costs | Availability caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retail cash back | An eligible debit or prepaid card and PIN, used at a participating store | Yes | The retailer sets availability, amount limits, minimum-purchase rules, and any fee. The card issuer may also have terms. | Not every store, card, or checkout lane offers it. |
| Post-office debit cash back | A debit card supported by the service at that location | A debit transaction is required | The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reported increments of $10, up to $50, without charge. | That reported service does not establish that every post office or card supports it. |
| Bank teller withdrawal | A bank branch and an account or card the branch can serve | No retail purchase is described | Identification requirements and fees depend on the bank and location. | A branch may not serve a noncustomer; ask before relying on it. |
| Issuer-specific cash at checkout | A card and participating store that support the issuer’s feature | Usually tied to checkout | Terms depend on the issuer and retailer. For Discover’s documented feature, the standard purchase APR applies to the cash received. | This is not a general credit-card benefit, and store limits may differ. |
| Cardless ATM access | An eligible debit card loaded in a supported mobile wallet and a supported ATM | No store purchase, but an ATM is required | Use depends on the card, wallet, and ATM support. | It helps when you lack a physical card, not when there is no nearby ATM. |
Get cash back at a retailer with a debit or prepaid card
At participating stores, you can request cash as part of a qualifying debit or prepaid card purchase. The transaction is authenticated with the card’s PIN. This combines a purchase with a cash withdrawal at checkout; it is not a cash withdrawal available automatically at every retailer.

Before you pay
- Ask whether the store offers debit or prepaid cash back for your card. If you are at a self-checkout, look for a cash-back prompt or ask an employee before starting.
- Check the amount the retailer will allow and whether it requires a minimum purchase. Limits and minimums are store-specific.
- Review the terminal’s prompts for the cash amount and any fee. If the fee or amount is unclear, stop and ask the cashier before authorizing the payment.
- Enter your PIN only after you have confirmed the amount and terms. Keep the receipt so you can check that the purchase and cash amount were recorded as expected.
Ask these questions plainly: “Do you offer cash back on debit?” “What is the maximum?” “Is there a minimum purchase?” and “Is there a fee?” A store can have different rules from another branch of the same chain, and a checkout lane may not display the option until the transaction is processed as debit. Do not assume that a credit-card transaction will be treated the same way as a debit or prepaid transaction.
The retailer’s rules matter as much as the card’s. A card issuer may not charge its own point-of-sale cash-back fee, but a retailer can still impose a fee, set a minimum purchase, or cap the amount. Fees also vary among chains and may change, so an old fee report is not a reliable schedule for today’s checkout.
The CFPB’s 2024 analysis of recorded cash-getting methods across 2017–2022 found that retail point-of-sale withdrawals made up 17% of the analyzed methods for obtaining cash from checking accounts, savings accounts, or prepaid cards. ATMs accounted for 61%, bank tellers 14%, and other methods 8%. Those percentages describe the combined historical period, not current usage or the likelihood that a particular store will offer cash back.
What can make a retail attempt fail?
The card may not be eligible, the store may not participate, or the requested amount may exceed the store’s limit. A minimum purchase can also make a very small cash request impractical. If the terminal shows a fee you did not expect, cancel or ask for clarification before entering your PIN. If the cashier cannot confirm the rules, use another location or another cash-access method instead of guessing.
Retail cash back is most useful when you are already making a purchase and need a modest amount. It is not a guarantee that you can obtain any amount you choose, and it does not eliminate the need to check the total cost of the transaction.
Ask whether a post office can provide debit cash back
The CFPB reports that the U.S. Postal Service offers cash back on debit transactions in $10 increments, up to $50, without charge. Treat this as a possible option rather than a guarantee: the reported terms do not establish that every post-office location offers the service or that every debit card is accepted.

Before making a trip, contact the location or ask at the counter whether it can provide debit cash back with your card. Confirm the amount available and any conditions before you begin the transaction. If the location cannot confirm service, plan around another option rather than assuming the reported program is available there.
The increment rule matters. If the service is available, the reported amounts are in $10 steps, with a ceiling of $50. It is therefore different from a retailer that might let you request an amount chosen at the terminal. The reported “without charge” wording describes the CFPB’s account of the postal option; still verify the current local process and card acceptance.
Ask a bank branch about a teller withdrawal
A teller can be a cash-access option, but branch access is not universal. A bank may serve its own customers while declining transactions for noncustomers; identity requirements and fees also depend on the bank and location. Do not assume that a branch will hand over cash simply because it is nearby.
- Call or contact the branch and explain whether you hold an account there and what card or account access you have.
- Ask whether it can handle the withdrawal, what identification is required, and whether any fee applies.
- Confirm the branch’s current service availability before traveling.
If you are not a customer, ask directly whether noncustomers can withdraw cash and what conditions apply. The answer is branch- and bank-specific. Even if a bank has a branch in your area, that does not establish that the branch will process a withdrawal from another institution’s card or account.
A teller route can be preferable when you need an amount that a retailer or post office cannot provide, or when you do not want to make a purchase. Its drawback is uncertainty about eligibility, identification and fees until the branch confirms them. Get those details first so a trip does not end in a refusal.

Some issuers offer cash at checkout at participating stores, but this is a specific issuer feature, not a benefit to assume comes with any credit card. Discover documents a feature allowing up to $120 every 24 hours at participating stores. Discover says it charges no transaction, ATM, or bank fee for the feature, but the standard purchase APR applies to the cash received. Participating stores may set different limits.

Before choosing this route, check the issuer’s current terms and the store’s limit. In particular, do not treat “no transaction fee” as meaning the cash is interest-free: the issuer states that the standard purchase APR applies. If the card or retailer does not support the feature, checkout cash is not available through that card.
Compare the cost with a debit cash-back option. A debit transaction may involve a retailer fee or minimum purchase, while the documented Discover feature has no transaction, ATM or bank fee but still carries the standard purchase APR on the cash received. Those are different kinds of cost: one is a checkout charge and the other is the interest rate that applies under the issuer’s terms.
The $120 figure is an issuer-documented limit for Discover’s feature, measured over 24 hours. It is not a universal credit-card limit. A participating store may impose a lower amount, and another issuer may offer no checkout-cash feature at all.
Know when cardless ATM access does—and does not—help
Cardless access can solve the problem of arriving at an ATM without a physical debit card, but it does not remove the need for an ATM. Chase says eligible debit cards loaded into supported mobile wallets can be used at select Chase ATMs by tapping a phone or smartwatch and entering the card PIN. You still need to find a supported ATM and have an eligible card and wallet setup.
If your issue is that you cannot find an ATM nearby, look instead at retailer cash back, a post office, or a branch that confirms it can serve you. Cardless access is relevant only when the obstacle is the missing physical card and a supported ATM is available. A mobile wallet by itself does not turn an ordinary store checkout into an ATM or guarantee access at every machine.
Compare the real cost, limit and effort
Evaluate each method on six questions: Is your card or account eligible? Must you make a purchase? What fee or interest applies? How much can you withdraw? Is the service available close by? Will the provider serve you if you are not a customer?

- Eligibility: Retail cash back generally calls for an eligible debit or prepaid card and PIN. Postal and teller services may accept only particular cards or customers. Issuer-specific checkout cash requires the issuer’s feature and a participating store.
- Purchase requirement: Retail and checkout cash are tied to a transaction. A teller withdrawal does not describe a retail purchase, while cardless access still requires an ATM.
- Fees and interest: Retailers may charge a fee even when the issuer does not. The reported postal option is in $10 increments up to $50 without charge. Discover’s documented feature has no transaction, ATM or bank fee, but its standard purchase APR applies to the cash.
- Amount: Stores set their own limits. The postal amount reported by the CFPB is up to $50. Discover documents up to $120 every 24 hours, subject to participating-store limits.
- Location: Participation is local. A nearby store or post office may not offer the service, and a branch may have a different policy from another branch of the same bank.
- Customer status: Teller withdrawals are especially dependent on whether the branch serves noncustomers. Ask directly rather than relying on the bank’s name or location alone.
Make the decision without a surprise fee or failed trip
- You have an eligible debit or prepaid card and are already shopping: ask about retailer cash back and verify the terminal amount, fee, and purchase minimum before approval.
- You want a no-fee possibility outside a store: ask whether a post office offers the reported debit cash-back service at that location; do not assume the service is universal.
- You can reach a bank branch: call first, especially if you are not that bank’s customer, to confirm service, ID requirements, and fees.
- You have an issuer with a checkout-cash feature: verify the participating-store limit and whether interest applies; for Discover’s documented option, the standard purchase APR applies to the cash.
- You lack your physical debit card but can reach an ATM: check whether your card and wallet work at a supported cardless ATM. This does not help if no ATM is nearby.
Use a simple pre-transaction checklist
- Identify the card: debit, prepaid or a credit card with a documented checkout-cash feature.
- Identify the provider: retailer, post office, bank branch or issuer-participating store.
- Confirm the maximum amount and any minimum purchase.
- Confirm every cost, including a retailer fee or applicable credit-card interest.
- Confirm eligibility, PIN or identification requirements and whether noncustomers are accepted.
- Approve the transaction only after the terminal or staff member has stated terms you understand.
Keep the receipt and compare the recorded purchase and cash amount with what you requested. If the amount or fee is different, ask the provider to explain it while the transaction details are still available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get cash back at a store without using an ATM?
Often, yes. Participating retailers may let you request cash during a purchase made with an eligible debit or prepaid card and PIN. Ask about the amount, fee and minimum purchase before authorizing the transaction; participation is not universal.
Can I get cash at a post office?
The CFPB reports a U.S. Postal Service debit cash-back option in $10 increments up to $50 without charge. Confirm that the specific location and your debit card support it before traveling.
Will a bank give cash to someone who is not a customer?
Possibly, but do not assume it. Branch policies differ, and identification, card acceptance and fees depend on the bank and location. Contact the branch and ask specifically about noncustomer withdrawals.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is cash back on a credit card the same as debit cash back?
No. Some issuers have a specific cash-at-checkout feature. Discover documents up to $120 every 24 hours at participating stores, with no transaction, ATM or bank fee, but its standard purchase APR applies to the cash. Other credit cards may not offer the feature.
Best Value
Does cardless ATM access work when there is no ATM nearby?
No. Cardless access addresses the lack of a physical card, not the lack of an ATM. Chase says eligible debit cards in supported mobile wallets can work at select Chase ATMs by tapping a phone or smartwatch and entering the PIN.
How do I avoid an unexpected cash-back fee?
Ask the cashier or post-office staff first, and read the terminal prompt before entering your PIN or approving the transaction. Retailers set their own fees and limits, and fee policies can change.
How much cash can I get from a retailer?
There is no single universal amount in the documented options. The retailer sets the cash-back limit and may require a minimum purchase. Confirm the exact amount at that store before paying.
Are the 17% retail and 61% ATM figures current?
No. They are shares from the CFPB’s 2024 analysis of combined 2017–2022 data: retail point-of-sale withdrawals 17%, ATMs 61%, tellers 14% and other methods 8%. They describe that historical dataset, not current usage or a guarantee for any store.
The Bottom Line
If no ATM is nearby, start by asking a participating retailer whether your eligible debit or prepaid card can receive cash back with a purchase. Confirm the amount, minimum purchase and fee before approving. A U.S. post office may offer debit cash back in $10 increments up to $50, a bank teller may help after confirming branch policy, and an issuer-specific credit-card feature may work at checkout but can carry interest. Cardless ATM access only helps when an ATM is available and the problem is your missing physical card.
