For most personal laptops being sold, donated, or recycled, use the operating system’s built-in erase option after backing up and checking your files. A factory reset removes personal data for ordinary handoff, but the label alone does not prove that every storage location has been sanitized against every recovery method. If the data is regulated or highly sensitive, use the sanitization procedure required for the device and storage media—not a generic reset.
Factory reset and secure data erasure are not the same thing
A factory reset is an operating-system recovery feature. Depending on the platform and the option selected, it reinstalls or restores the system and removes user files, apps, or settings. Secure data erasure describes a goal: making access to target data infeasible for a particular level of effort.

NIST’s glossary distinguishes sanitization actions such as Clear, Purge, and Destroy. Its definition of Clear concerns logical techniques over user-addressable storage, intended to resist simple, non-invasive recovery through the ordinary interface. A factory-reset menu may be an example in applicable circumstances, but that does not mean every reset on every device reaches the same assurance level. See NIST’s sanitization definition and its definition of Clear.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMicrosoft is explicit about the limits of Windows’ consumer option: “The data erasure functionality is targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” That makes it useful for a typical consumer handoff, but not a compliance certification or promise of forensic-grade erasure. Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance explains the available choices.

Which wipe option should you choose?
| Choice | Purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Keep my files / repair reset | Troubleshoot while keeping personal files | Windows reinstalls while preserving personal files and removing apps and settings. It is not appropriate for selling or transferring the laptop. |
| Remove everything / factory reset | Fresh start or ordinary handoff | The operating system is reinstalled or restored and user data is removed according to that platform’s behavior. Back up first; details differ by OS. |
| Built-in clean or erase option | Make ordinary recovery harder during consumer handoff | Windows Clean data is aimed at consumers and does not meet government or industry erasure standards. Apple’s erase workflow is limited to supported Macs and its assurance depends in part on hardware and prior encryption. |
| Media sanitization under policy | Higher-sensitivity or regulated data | Choose a method matched to media, data classification, and required assurance, following current standards, vendor instructions, and organizational policy. |
Before wiping: protect files, accounts, and other storage
- Copy important local files to a separate destination, then open a sample of the copied files to verify the backup. Cloud-synced and external files behave separately from the laptop’s local storage.
- Make sure you can access the accounts and credentials you will need afterward. If Windows uses BitLocker, locate the recovery key before starting.
- Check whether the laptop is personally owned or managed by an employer or school. A managed device may need administrator or mobile-device-management handling.
- Disconnect external drives and memory cards you do not intend to erase. Check internal volumes and removable media separately; do not assume a system reset covers every attached drive.
- Keep the laptop connected to power and allow the reset or erase process to finish. After a handoff reset, leave it at the initial setup screen for the next owner rather than signing in again.
Microsoft’s Windows backup guidance and Google’s Chromebook reset instructions cover platform-specific preparation.
How to wipe a Windows 11 or Windows 10 laptop
- Back up your files and confirm your BitLocker recovery key is available if the device is encrypted.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Choose Remove everything for a sale, donation, or recycling handoff. Do not choose the keep-files option.
- When offered, enable Clean data to make removed files harder to recover. Microsoft cautions that this consumer feature does not meet government and industry data-erasure standards.
- Choose Cloud download for a fresh Windows copy downloaded during the reset, or Local reinstall to use files already on the PC; local reinstall may not include the latest updates.
- Follow the prompts and leave the device at the first-run setup screen when it completes.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that release; this is separate from how its reset options work.

How to erase a Mac
Supported Macs: Erase All Content and Settings
Apple’s Erase All Content and Settings workflow requires macOS Monterey 12 or later and either Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. Follow Apple’s current instructions for the Mac’s version of macOS. Once erased, the Mac activates and restarts into Setup Assistant; for a transfer, stop there and turn it off so the recipient can set it up. Apple’s erase and factory-reset instructions describe eligibility and the handoff state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Older Macs need a hardware and encryption check
The same assurance should not be assumed for every older Mac. The UK National Cyber Security Centre notes that on Macs without T2, if encryption was not enabled before first use, it cannot be guaranteed that a secure erase removes all sensitive data so it cannot be recovered. For these machines, model and encryption history matter; use guidance appropriate to the hardware and sensitivity of the data.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
How to reset a Chromebook
Google’s consumer reset instructions say a factory reset erases user data stored on the Chromebook, including files in Downloads, but does not erase files in Google Drive or on external storage. Sync or copy anything you need first. A work- or school-managed Chromebook may not be reset by its user; contact the administrator.
Powerwash clears cryptographic keys protecting locally stored user and enterprise content, which can make that local content inaccessible. Google’s enterprise documentation also warns that Powerwash does not necessarily remove every trace: examples include the ChromeOS copy, some encrypted temporary files, device health and diagnostic information, enterprise-domain or re-enrollment information, and cloud-synced data. Local user data, device information, and off-device copies are distinct things. Google’s Powerwash and data-erasure explanation discusses those limits.

When a consumer reset is not enough
NIST frames sanitization by the effort required to access target data, rather than by a reassuring-sounding menu label. The publication page for NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 records it as published on December 17, 2014, and updated May 7, 2026; the CSRC glossary now cites Rev. 2. Because revision and method details matter, consult the current full publication before specifying a procedure or making a compliance claim.

The NCSC’s device-erasure guidance says, “The methods described here will prevent almost everyone from recovering data,” but immediately qualifies that determined experts using specialist techniques may recover some data in some circumstances. For an absolute-zero-recovery requirement, it points to secure sanitisation guidance and notes that some methods are destructive and can make a device unusable. Its guidance was published June 29, 2021, reviewed May 13, 2025, and targets cyber security professionals, large organisations, and the public sector; it is useful for risk framing, not a blanket requirement for every consumer.
