How to Water Newly Planted Trees During a Mountain Drought

Water newly planted trees based on soil moisture, not a fixed calendar. Check the root ball and nearby soil, water slowly, and widen coverage as roots grow.

Water newly planted trees deeply at planting, then water again when checks show the root ball is beginning to dry. During a mountain drought, don’t follow a fixed weekly schedule: mountain soils, exposure, rainfall and local watering rules vary too much. Check both the original root ball and the soil around it, and apply water slowly enough to soak them without runoff.

Why new trees need close attention during drought

A newly planted tree has a limited root system and is especially vulnerable to drying. Colorado State University Extension says a transplanted tree in Colorado needs at least one year of establishment for each inch of trunk diameter. That is an estimate of how long establishment can take—not a formula for how often to water. Colorado State University Extension’s drought guidance describes newly planted trees as a high priority when water is scarce.

At first, most of the tree’s roots remain within the nursery root ball. That soil can dry out while the surrounding ground still feels moist, so checking only beside the tree can give a false sense of security. As roots grow outward, the area that needs water expands too.

How to water and check soil moisture

  1. Soak the root ball at planting. Water thoroughly so the original root ball is wet. Make sure water enters the soil rather than running off.
  2. Check moisture frequently at first. University of Maryland Extension recommends daily soil-moisture checks for the first two weeks after planting and watering deeply if the top six inches are dry. Treat this as that source’s guidance, not a universal schedule for mountain sites. Check the root ball itself as well, because it may dry before adjacent soil. University of Maryland Extension’s watering guidance was updated May 29, 2026; Iowa State Extension also emphasizes checking the original root ball.
  3. Check below the surface. Use a soil knife, probe or careful hand-digging to assess moisture rather than relying on the surface. Penn State recommends checking the six-to-nine-inch zone; Iowa State describes checking six to twelve inches. These are practical checking depths from those sources, not a claim that every tree’s roots occupy the same depth.
  4. Water slowly over the area that needs it. Direct a trickling hose to the root ball and some nearby soil, or use a soaker hose arranged to wet that area. Slow application helps water soak in and reduces runoff. Move the hose or adjust its layout if one part of the soil remains dry.
  5. Check again before watering more. Allow some drying between waterings; roots also need oxygen, and saturated soil can harm them. If the root ball is still moist, don’t water just because a certain number of days has passed.
  6. Expand coverage as the tree establishes. Gradually water a broader area beyond the original root ball as roots spread. A watering bag can deliver water slowly to the root ball, but may not reach the larger rooting area; it does not replace moisture checks.

Iowa State Extension explains the root-ball issue and watering mechanics in its newly planted tree watering guidance. Penn State describes checking soil moisture with a probe in its watering guidance for landscape trees and shrubs. Iowa State’s separate tree and shrub watering article discusses moisture checks and the risk of overwatering.

Choose a watering method that reaches the roots

Method What it does well What to watch
Trickling hose Can wet the original root ball and nearby soil when positioned carefully. Move or reposition it so water reaches the full area; stop or slow the flow if water runs off.
Soaker hose Can apply water slowly across a broader area when arranged around the root ball and adjusted as roots spread. Check the soil afterward. A hose layout that misses part of the root zone won’t solve dry spots.
Watering bag Provides slow delivery focused on the original root ball. May not wet the expanding root zone. Continue checking both the root ball and surrounding soil.
Soil probe or soil knife Helps assess moisture below the surface. Checks moisture but does not water; inspect the root ball as well as adjacent soil.

Colorado State University Extension’s recently planted tree guidance notes that additional irrigation beyond the original root ball may help keep the rooting area moist in Colorado. The practical target is not a particular device: it is even, slow watering of the soil the tree is currently using, verified by checking moisture.

Use mulch, but keep checking

Mulch can slow moisture loss from the soil. Colorado State University Extension recommends three to four inches in its drought guidance. Follow local practice, keep mulch clear of the trunk and root flare, and don’t let a mulch layer hide whether the root ball or surrounding soil is dry. Mulch reduces evaporation; it does not replace irrigation when checks show the tree needs water.

Why there is no universal mountain watering amount

Elevation alone does not determine how much or how often to water. Soil texture and depth, slope, sun and wind exposure, rainfall, tree size and species all affect how quickly the root ball dries and how well water stays in place. A steep or compacted site may shed water; another site may retain it. Check the tree’s soil and follow local water restrictions and local extension advice.

Published amounts from other places are not interchangeable. For example, the City of Portland gives a range of 10–30 gallons weekly in dry conditions, but that municipal guidance is specific to Portland, not a mountain-region prescription. Portland’s tree-watering page does not establish a rate for your elevation, soil or water district. Don’t combine such figures with Colorado’s establishment estimate to create a watering formula.

Colorado’s climate and drought conditions make its extension guidance a useful regional reference, but mountain sites still vary substantially. When local restrictions apply, follow them; when the site’s soil or drainage is uncertain, a local extension office, nursery or qualified arborist can help assess conditions.
