The Xbox is only passing the external video through; it does not provide channels, decode a subscription, or replace the cable or satellite receiver.
What the Xbox One HDMI-In setup does
The Xbox One can sit between an external television source and a display. In the documented arrangement, a set-top box supplies the television signal, the Xbox receives that signal through HDMI-In, and the console sends the picture onward through HDMI-Out.

| Connection | Plug this end into | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Source HDMI cable | Set-top box or other HDMI-output source → Xbox One HDMI IN | Brings the television source into the console |
| Display HDMI cable | Xbox One HDMI OUT → television HDMI input | Sends the received picture and audio to the TV |
| Optional A/V receiver | Xbox output and receiver output, following the receiver’s labeled inputs and output | Routes audio and video through compatible home-theater equipment |
This arrangement is useful when you want the Xbox and a television source in one HDMI chain, or when the television has fewer convenient HDMI inputs. It is not a tuner. The console cannot create live channels when nothing is connected to HDMI-In.

- An Xbox One console with a rear HDMI-In port. These instructions are for Xbox One hardware, not Xbox Series X or Series S.
- A cable, satellite, or other source device with an HDMI output. Microsoft’s documented example is a set-top box.
- A television with an available HDMI input.
- Two suitable HDMI cables: one for the source-to-console connection and one for the console-to-TV connection. Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable, but an Xbox-branded cable is not required; a suitable cable you already own can be used.
- An active television service and compatible receiver when the channels are paid, encrypted, or otherwise supplied by a provider. The Xbox does not authenticate or decode that service by itself.
- If your installation includes an A/V receiver, a receiver with an appropriate HDMI input/output arrangement and HDMI-audio support.
Look at the labels rather than relying on the position of a socket. The receiver’s output must go to the Xbox port labeled HDMI IN. The television must be fed from the Xbox port labeled HDMI OUT. Reversing those two connections is the most common setup error.

How to connect a cable or satellite box to Xbox One
- Identify the source. Find the HDMI output on the cable or satellite receiver. This is the box that actually receives your subscribed channels. Do not use a loose HDMI cable as a substitute for the receiver.
- Locate HDMI-In on the console. On the rear of the Xbox One, find the port marked HDMI IN. It is the input intended for a set-top box or another external HDMI source.
- Power down if the equipment manuals require it. The archived Microsoft setup instructions advise following the equipment makers’ connection guidance, including turning equipment off before changing cables when instructed.
- Connect the source to the Xbox. Plug one HDMI cable into the receiver’s HDMI OUT and the other end into the Xbox One HDMI IN. The direction matters: source OUT goes to console IN.
- Connect the Xbox to the television. Plug the second HDMI cable into the Xbox One HDMI OUT and connect the other end to an HDMI input on the TV. Note the TV input label or number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Insert an A/V receiver only when appropriate. If your theater system is intended to switch HDMI sources, connect the Xbox to a suitable receiver input and connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. Follow the receiver’s own input/output labels and confirm that it supports the audio format used by the source.
- Turn on the display chain. Turn on the television, Xbox One, source receiver, and any A/V receiver. If the manuals specify a different order, use that order.
- Select the Xbox input on the TV. Use the television remote to choose the HDMI input where the Xbox HDMI OUT is connected. Selecting the source receiver’s input directly will not show the Xbox’s HDMI-In feed if the console is the device connected to the TV.
At this point, the physical path is complete: the source supplies video to HDMI-In, and the Xbox supplies the resulting output to the television. You still need to use the console’s installed software to view that HDMI device.
How to view the HDMI source on the console
After choosing the Xbox input on the television, use the HDMI-device viewing control available on your Xbox One software. The exact app name, menu location, and availability can vary by console software version, and a current universal navigation path is not established here. Do not assume that a historical menu route will appear unchanged on every updated console.
OneGuide’s history is important. Microsoft removed live-TV listings from OneGuide in 2021. Contemporary reporting said that viewing HDMI-connected devices could continue even though the listings feature ended. The loss of listings is therefore different from removing the physical HDMI-In port. It does mean you should not expect the console to provide a current channel grid, program metadata, or a guaranteed OneGuide menu on every Xbox One installation.

If you cannot find an HDMI viewing option, first confirm that the TV is showing the Xbox’s HDMI output and that the external receiver is powered and displaying a channel. Then check the console’s current support information and the manuals for the connected devices rather than relying on an old screenshot or an app path from an earlier Xbox software release.
What the Xbox does not do
- It does not supply television service. A cable or satellite receiver, or another compatible HDMI-output source, remains necessary.
- It does not replace a provider subscription. Subscribed or encrypted channels still depend on the provider’s receiver and service authorization.
- It is not guaranteed to accept every HDMI device. The documented setup covers a set-top box. Compatibility with every modern streaming stick, game console, camera, or protected signal is not established.
- It is not guaranteed to pass every resolution. The available documentation does not establish a universal maximum HDMI-In resolution, 4K pass-through support, or a particular refresh-rate limit.
- It is not guaranteed to add zero latency. The Xbox is in the video path, so no claim of zero input delay or unchanged timing should be made without testing the specific source, console software, and display.
- It does not preserve all historical guide features. The 2021 OneGuide change removed live-TV listings even though HDMI-device viewing was reported to remain possible.
Choosing between direct TV connection and the Xbox route
You do not need to route a source through the Xbox if the television has a free HDMI input. Connect the receiver directly to the TV when that is simpler. Use the Xbox chain when its HDMI-In arrangement fits the way you manage the devices or when the TV’s available inputs make the arrangement convenient.
| Consideration | Source connected directly to TV | Source routed through Xbox One HDMI-In |
|---|---|---|
| Physical path | Receiver HDMI OUT → TV HDMI input | Receiver HDMI OUT → Xbox HDMI IN → Xbox HDMI OUT → TV |
| Extra hardware | No console in the signal path | Requires an Xbox One and an additional HDMI connection |
| Guide and listings | Depends on the TV or receiver | Do not expect live-TV listings from OneGuide after the 2021 change |
| Channel source | Still requires the receiver and service | Still requires the receiver and service; Xbox does not create channels |
| Compatibility certainty | Determined by the TV and receiver | Adds Xbox HDMI-In and software compatibility to the chain |
| Best reason to choose it | The TV has a suitable free HDMI port and you want the shortest path | You specifically want the source routed through the Xbox or need to organize the available HDMI connections that way |
There is no documented performance advantage for routing the signal through the Xbox. The choice is primarily about ports, device organization, and whether the additional console step is useful to you.

Troubleshooting an Xbox One HDMI-In connection
No picture on the television
- Check the cable direction: the source’s HDMI OUT must connect to Xbox HDMI IN, and Xbox HDMI OUT must connect to the TV.
- Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input connected to the Xbox, not an unused TV input.
- Confirm that the cable or satellite receiver is powered and producing a picture on its own output.
- Inspect both HDMI plugs and reseat them firmly. If the equipment manuals specify a connection or startup order, follow it.
- If an A/V receiver is installed, verify that the Xbox is connected to the receiver input you selected and that the receiver’s output is connected to the TV.
The TV shows the Xbox interface but not the source
This usually means the display connection is working while the HDMI-In viewing function has not been opened. Confirm that the external receiver is on, then use the HDMI-device viewing control available in the installed Xbox software. Because current menu availability is not uniform across software versions, consult the console’s present menus and support documentation instead of assuming the old OneGuide path remains.

Picture appears briefly and then disappears
Recheck every connection and the selected TV or receiver input. A source may also be using a signal format that the particular Xbox, receiver, or TV combination does not accept. The available setup documentation does not establish universal support for every resolution or protected HDMI signal, so check the manuals for all three devices before assuming the console is defective.
Video works but audio does not
Check whether the television or A/V receiver is selected as the active audio destination. In a receiver-based installation, verify that the receiver supports HDMI audio and that its output is connected correctly. If the source has audio-format settings, compare them with the capabilities listed in the receiver and TV manuals.

Subscribed channels are unavailable
The Xbox cannot authorize a cable or satellite subscription. Make sure the provider’s receiver is connected as the HDMI source, is signed in or authorized as required by the provider, and can display the channel when used with its normal output. If the receiver itself cannot show the channel, routing it through Xbox HDMI-In will not create access.
The listings guide is missing
That may be expected. Live-TV listings in OneGuide were removed in 2021. The physical HDMI-In connection and the listings feature are separate, and the absence of a channel grid does not by itself prove that the HDMI wiring is wrong. Look for the HDMI-device viewing control available on your installed software, with the understanding that its exact location is not guaranteed.

The documented example is a cable or satellite set-top box. A different HDMI-output device may require a signal format or protection method that the Xbox path does not support. Check the source, Xbox, television, and any receiver manuals for compatibility information. Do not assume that a streaming device, another console, or a protected video source will behave exactly like the documented set-top box.

HDMI cable guidance
A suitable High Speed HDMI cable is sufficient for the physical source-to-console link when it meets the requirements of the connected equipment. Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable, according to Xbox Wire’s Xbox One S display guidance, but that does not make an Xbox-specific cable mandatory. You may already have an appropriate cable; buy another only if you need the length, connector condition, or quantity required by your installation.
Cable labeling alone cannot guarantee that every source format will pass through the complete chain. The source, Xbox, A/V receiver, and television must all support the signal being used. If a picture fails, verify the connections and device specifications before treating the cable as the only possible cause.
Important model and software boundaries
- These steps concern the original Xbox One family’s HDMI-In hardware. They should not be presented as instructions for Xbox Series X|S, whose port layout and features differ.
- The archived Microsoft connection instructions date from 2015, and the High Speed HDMI cable statement comes from 2016 Xbox One S guidance. They establish the connection pattern and included-cable detail, not a promise that every current software screen is unchanged.
- The OneGuide listings change was reported in 2021. It explains why older tutorials may show a guide that you no longer see.
- Current app names and menu navigation were not verified for every Xbox One software build. Treat the physical wiring instructions as stable, but check the console’s present interface for the control that displays the HDMI input.
A quick installation checklist
- Confirm the console is an Xbox One with HDMI IN.
- Confirm the source receiver has HDMI OUT and an active channel or input.
- Connect source HDMI OUT to Xbox HDMI IN.
- Connect Xbox HDMI OUT to the TV, or to a compatible A/V receiver that then feeds the TV.
- Select the TV input used by the Xbox.
- Open the HDMI-device viewing control available on the installed Xbox software.
- If video or audio fails, verify cable direction, selected inputs, power, receiver routing, and device-manual compatibility.
Bottom line for this setup
The essential chain is cable or satellite receiver HDMI OUT → Xbox One HDMI IN → Xbox One HDMI OUT → TV. The receiver remains the source of the channels, while the Xbox acts as the pass-through device. OneGuide’s live listings ended in 2021, so use the HDMI viewing control that your current Xbox One software provides and do not assume an old guide menu is still present.
