ExpressVPN lists Hulu as a compatible streaming service and provides troubleshooting steps for U.S. users, but it cannot guarantee access on every device, account, or connection. Hulu’s own U.S. eligibility, location, and Home network rules still apply. Use the steps below if you are eligible to use Hulu and need help setting it up or diagnosing a connection problem.
Before you connect: check Hulu’s location and Home network rules
Hulu says subscribers must be located within the U.S.; Hulu + Live TV is available in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using a VPN does not make a person eligible for Hulu or remove the service’s location restrictions. [Hulu plans]

For Hulu + Live TV, the Home network is important for local channels and living-room devices. Hulu says you must set it using the internet connection you intend to designate as Home. A mobile or shared Wi-Fi network cannot be used to set it, and a VPN or anonymous proxy can prevent Home network setup. Hulu says subscribers must set a Home network within 30 days of signing up for a Live TV plan. [Hulu Help: Manage your Home network for Live TV] [Hulu + Live TV]

How to connect using the ExpressVPN app
- Confirm the device supports both services. Hulu lists Fire TV and Fire TV Stick among its supported devices for Hulu + Live TV. ExpressVPN documents an app for Fire TV and Fire TV Stick running Fire OS 6 or later, as well as Vega OS. [Hulu + Live TV] [ExpressVPN Fire TV setup guide]
- Install and open ExpressVPN. Sign in to the app on the supported device and connect to a server location that matches the country where you are physically located. ExpressVPN’s general streaming guidance recommends this approach; it does not promise that every connection will work with Hulu. [ExpressVPN streaming guidance]
- Open Hulu. If you changed ExpressVPN locations while the Hulu app was open, force-close Hulu and reopen it before trying again. [ExpressVPN Hulu troubleshooting]
Apple TV and other device options
Apple TV with tvOS 17 or later
ExpressVPN documents a native Apple TV app for tvOS 17 and later. Install and use that app to connect on a supported Apple TV. [ExpressVPN Apple TV setup guide]
Older Apple TV or devices without an ExpressVPN app
For Apple TV models that cannot run tvOS 17 or later, ExpressVPN describes MediaStreamer and a router running ExpressVPN as alternative setup paths. They are not interchangeable: MediaStreamer is DNS, not a VPN, while router-based VPN use depends on a compatible router and its configuration. How the setup paths differ
| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN app | Runs the VPN on a supported device. | Verify that your device and operating system support the app; Fire TV and newer Apple TV have documented paths in ExpressVPN’s setup guides. |
| Router running ExpressVPN | Routes connected devices through the VPN connection. | ExpressVPN documents compatible Asus, Linksys, or Netgear routers, but support and configuration depend on the particular model. [ExpressVPN router guidance] |
| MediaStreamer | Provides a DNS service for streaming, not a VPN connection. | It does not encrypt traffic, provide VPN privacy or security benefits, or let you change locations. [ExpressVPN MediaStreamer guidance] |
Why Hulu may not work with ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN lists Hulu as compatible and publishes troubleshooting for U.S. users, but compatibility is not a guarantee for every account, server, or network. Hulu’s location and Home network requirements also remain in force, and a VPN may interfere with setting up the Home network. [ExpressVPN Hulu troubleshooting] [Hulu Home network guidance]
