You can watch live TV online without a cable subscription through free, ad-supported services such as The Roku Channel and Pluto TV. They offer live channel guides, but their lineups are not a replacement for every cable channel or local broadcast station. If local over-the-air stations are your priority, an HDTV antenna is a separate option; it receives broadcasts rather than streaming them over the internet.
Start with a free live-TV service
Free, ad-supported streaming services are the simplest place to begin if you want live programming on a phone, computer, or compatible TV. The Roku Channel advertises 500+ free live channels, with categories including news, weather, sports, food and home, reality, and kids’ programming. Pluto TV says its website streams 100+ live channels. These are the services’ own current channel-count claims, and catalogs can change.

| Option | What it offers | Useful to know |
|---|---|---|
| The Roku Channel | Roku advertises 500+ free live channels, including a range of genres and some local streaming news options. | Roku’s cited pages do not establish that every local broadcast affiliate or paid cable network is included. Check the current guide for a specific channel. |
| Pluto TV | Pluto TV says viewers can stream 100+ live channels in a web browser and also lists mobile, streaming-device, smart-TV, and desktop options. | Its channel count and supported-device examples may change and may vary by region. Check the current official information for your location and device. |
Neither advertised count tells you whether a service carries the exact channel you want. A stream with a familiar network name or similar programming is not necessarily the same as that network’s full paid channel feed.

Check the device and the channel before settling in
Both services can be watched through supported devices, but the exact options differ. Pluto TV lists browser viewing as well as apps for categories of devices such as phones, smart TVs, and streaming devices. Confirm the current compatibility list for your particular model and country rather than assuming every app is available everywhere.

- Choose a service: Visit the official Roku Channel or Pluto TV page and check whether it is available where you live.
- Open its official site or app: Use the service’s own website or a supported app. An unofficial stream’s availability does not establish that it has rights to show the content.
- Search or browse the live guide: Confirm that the specific channel is listed now; catalogs and schedules can change.
- Test playback on your device: If the app is not offered for your device, try another supported device or a browser option where the service provides one.
Know what “free” means
These services can show ads. Roku describes The Roku Channel’s live channels as free, while Tubi explicitly says advertising pays for content on its service. Tubi’s cited official pages establish a free, ad-supported service for movies and TV shows, not live television, so it is not included here as a live-TV option. Its Help Center describes Tubi as “a 100% free, 100% legal streaming service”; that statement applies to Tubi itself and does not certify unrelated sites.

If you specifically want the local stations broadcast over the air in your area, an HDTV antenna may be a better fit than a streaming channel guide. It is not an internet-streaming option and reception depends on where you are and how the antenna is positioned.
