Fold dry knitwear for storage rather than hanging it. Those steps prevent the lengthwise pull, shoulder bumps, felting and loss of shape that happen when a saturated knit is handled like a woven shirt.
Start with the care label, not the fiber name
“Wool,” “cotton,” “cashmere,” “acrylic” or “blend” describes material, but it does not by itself tell you how a particular sweater was knitted, finished, lined or stabilized. Two garments with the same fiber content can have different safe washing and drying instructions. The sewn-in care claim takes priority.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission requires covered apparel to carry regular care instructions. Those instructions identify washing or dry-cleaning methods and, where relevant, drying directions. GINETEX’s international care-symbol system likewise bases the maximum treatment temperature and process on the label rather than on fiber content alone. The regulatory details differ by country, so readers outside the United States should use the symbols and wording required in their market.
| What the label says | What to do | What not to substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Dry clean only | Take the garment to a cleaner that can follow the stated process. | Do not replace professional cleaning with a basin wash, even if the fiber seems washable. |
| Hand wash | Use a basin, the label’s temperature, and gentle movement. | Do not assume a mesh bag or a delicate machine cycle makes it machine-safe. |
| Machine wash | Use only the cycle, temperature and load conditions permitted by the claim. A wool or delicate cycle is suitable only when the label allows it. | Do not choose a hotter or more vigorous program because the garment is “just wool” or “just acrylic.” |
| Do not tumble dry or dry flat | Follow that drying direction exactly; lay the garment flat when instructed. | Do not hang a wet knit merely to save space or speed drying. |
| Tumble dry permitted | Use the stated heat or wool/delicates setting. Woolmark identifies low heat or a wool/delicates setting for garments with an explicit tumble-dry claim. | Do not generalize this permission to other sweaters. |
When a label is missing, illegible or contradictory, pause before washing. The safest choice is to ask the maker or use a professional cleaner rather than guess from the fiber label.

Prepare the sweater before it touches water
Preparation reduces the pulling and abrasion that often cause distortion before washing even begins.
- Read every line of the label, including temperature, cycle, bleach, drying and ironing symbols.
- Empty pockets. Remove belts, brooches, detachable collars, jewelry and other accessories. Woolmark specifically advises removing these items before washing or storing because their weight can create sagging or bulges.
- Close zippers and fasteners if the label or garment construction calls for it, and turn wool garments inside out. Woolmark recommends turning wool items inside out before washing.
- Separate dark, bright and light colors, and check a new or strongly dyed item for color transfer according to the maker’s directions.
- Measure the garment while dry if you are concerned about a valuable or precisely fitted piece. Measure body length, chest width and sleeve length; these reference points make it easier to reshape the garment accurately afterward.
Hand-wash a permitted sweater without pulling it
Hand washing gives you direct control, but it is not risk-free. The damaging actions are rubbing, twisting, wringing and lifting a waterlogged garment by one edge.

- Set up the basin. Use a clean sink, tub or basin and water at the temperature printed on the care label. If the label specifies a neutral, mild wool detergent, use that product at its stated dilution. Woolmark recommends a neutral, mild wool detergent for wool garments that are labeled washable.
- Fully wet the knit. Lower it into the water and press it down gently so the fibers wet evenly. Do not scrub high-soil areas against themselves. Let the detergent solution do the work for the time stated by the label or detergent directions.
- Move the water, not the sweater. Press the fabric gently through the bath with open hands. Avoid pulling sleeves, rubbing cuffs or agitating the garment in a way that makes loops slide against one another.
- Rinse at the label’s temperature. Drain and refill with clean water as directed. Support the entire garment when lifting it; never pick it up by the shoulders, neckline or a single sleeve.
- Remove water by pressing. Press the sweater against the basin or between clean towels. Do not twist or wring it. Woolmark’s guidance is to press excess water out carefully and bring the garment back into shape.
- Transfer it as a supported bundle. Slide a towel underneath, or cradle the knit with both hands, so its own weight does not stretch it on the way to the drying surface.
Machine-wash only when the label permits it
A machine can be appropriate for some wool and knit garments, but the care claim must authorize it. Woolmark recognizes machine washing for suitable wool items; it does not make every wool sweater machine-safe.

- Choose the approved program. Select the cycle named or represented by the label. A wool or delicate program is appropriate only if the garment’s instructions allow that treatment.
- Set the approved temperature. Use the label’s maximum temperature, not a hotter setting chosen for convenience. GINETEX describes the very-mild-wash symbol as reduced mechanical treatment and says the load should be substantially reduced, with the drum no more than one-third full.
- Use the approved detergent. For washable wool, Woolmark recommends a neutral, mild wool detergent. Do not use a product or additive that the label excludes.
- Keep the load compatible. Wash with similarly gentle items and avoid heavy garments, abrasive hardware or an overloaded drum. The one-third-full limit applies when the very-mild-wash symbol and its reduced-treatment conditions are specified.
- Unload promptly. When the cycle ends, support the knit with both hands. Do not leave it bunched in the drum, where creases and uneven moisture can set its shape.
- Press out water and reshape. A gentle spin permitted by the label may remove some water, but the garment still needs careful handling and flat drying unless its claim authorizes another method.
A fine-mesh wash bag can be a reasonable accessory for a machine-washable delicate, but the official care guidance does not make it a requirement. A bag cannot override a hand-wash-only or dry-clean-only instruction.

Dry the sweater flat and restore its dimensions
Drying is the most important stretch-prevention step. A wet knit is heavy, and gravity acts on every loop while the garment is unsupported. The Woolmark Company states: “Line drying or drying on hangers can cause knitted garments to stretch due to the weight of the moisture contained by the garment, with the result that the garment grows in length and loses its shape.”
Method 1: a clean, lint-free towel
- Spread a pale or white towel that does not shed lint on a flat, water-resistant surface.
- Place the damp sweater on the towel. Do not drag it into position; lift and slide the supporting towel if necessary.
- Gently shape the shoulders, side seams, cuffs, neckline and hem to their normal dimensions. Use your dry measurements or the garment’s matching seams as a guide.
- Smooth folds and align sleeves. Do not stretch the body beyond its original width or length.
- Leave it undisturbed until fully dry. Turn it only if the label or drying conditions require it, supporting the whole garment during the turn.
Method 2: a mesh sweater-drying screen
A mesh drying screen supplies a flat, ventilated surface and can improve airflow around a thick knit. Position the screen securely, distribute the garment evenly, and reshape it just as you would on a towel. It is a convenience, not a necessity; a clean towel performs the same essential job when you have adequate flat space.

Control heat, sun and airflow
- Keep the garment away from direct sun and direct heat such as radiators, heated floors or hair dryers. Uneven heat can distort dimensions and may damage finishes.
- Allow air to circulate around the drying surface, but do not use a fan or vent so forcefully that one section dries much faster than another.
- Do not hang a saturated sweater from a hanger, clothesline or shower rod. Shoulder humps and lengthwise growth are common results.
- If the label explicitly permits tumble drying, use only the stated low-heat or wool/delicates setting. A label-authorized exception does not authorize tumble drying for a different sweater.
| Flat-drying option | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lint-free towel | You need a no-cost method and have a clean, flat surface. | It may hold more moisture and need replacement or repositioning during a long dry. |
| Mesh drying screen | You want airflow beneath a thick knit or have limited towel space. | It requires a stable setup and storage space; it is not required by the care label. |
| Label-authorized low-heat dryer | The individual garment claim expressly permits tumble drying. | It is unsuitable when the label says flat dry or do not tumble dry. |
Why hanging causes problems
Hanging is not automatically wrong for every textile. Woolmark’s concise rule is “Hang wovens, fold knits”: shaped or padded hangers suit woven wool garments, while knitted garments should be gently folded and stored in drawers. A sweater’s loops can lengthen under the combined force of water, gravity and a narrow hanger edge. Even a dry knit can develop shoulder points or a distorted neckline if it remains suspended for long periods.
If a knit must be moved on a hanger briefly, wait until it is completely dry and support it with a broad, smooth surface rather than a thin wire edge. For routine storage, folding is the safer default.

If the sweater is already stretched or misshapen
First identify whether the problem is simply damp reshaping, gradual hanger distortion or severe felting. Woolmark offers a wool-specific recovery method: dip the affected area in water at 30°C to 40°C, gently massage it, then dry the garment flat in its intended shape. This is a corrective attempt, not a guarantee for every fiber, blend, stitch structure or finish.
- Test the method on an inconspicuous section if the garment’s instructions allow wet treatment.
- Wet only the affected wool area with water in the 30°C to 40°C range.
- Massage gently, without scrubbing or pulling.
- Lay the garment flat and ease the area back to its original proportions.
- Let it dry completely while supported.
If a care-label violation caused severe felting, the fibers may have locked together permanently and the sweater may not return to its former size. Do not keep applying heat, force or repeated washing in an attempt to reverse it; those actions can worsen the damage. For a valuable item, ask a specialist cleaner or the maker before trying further treatment.
Fold and store knitwear between wears
Store a knit only when it is clean and completely dry. Residual moisture and body oils create a poor environment for long-term storage, while a damp folded garment can develop persistent creases or odor.
- Finish drying. Check cuffs, collar, underarms and thick seams; these areas often retain moisture after the surface feels dry.
- Remove accessories. Empty pockets and take off belts, jewelry, pins and detachable pieces so they do not create pressure points or bulges.
- Fold along natural lines. Lay the sweater face down, fold sleeves inward without stretching them, then fold the body into a compact rectangle. Keep shoulders and side seams aligned.
- Choose a breathable drawer or shelf. Avoid compressing heavy piles so tightly that the lower garments lose their shape. Place heavier knits below lighter ones only when the stack remains loose enough to lift without dragging.
- Protect long-term storage. Woolmark mentions moth repellent for seasonal wool storage. Keep the repellent in its product container or approved storage format and never place it directly on the garment.
- Inspect before wearing again. Look for odor, dampness, moth damage or new distortion. Air the garment according to its label rather than placing it in direct sun or heat.
Seasonal storage plan for wool and other knits
At the end of the cold season
- Wash or professionally clean each piece according to its own claim; storing an unclean sweater can leave food, skin oils or perspiration that attract pests.
- Dry it completely and reshape it before folding.
- Remove all accessories and empty pockets.
- Place folded garments in a clean, dry drawer, shelf or storage container that does not crush them.
- For wool, use a suitable moth-protection product without allowing it to touch the garment directly.
During storage
- Keep the storage area dry and away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Open a container periodically if its instructions call for ventilation, and check for moisture or pests.
- Refold a garment if a hard crease forms, supporting it rather than pulling one corner.
When the season returns
- Remove the sweater from storage and inspect seams, cuffs, collar and underarms.
- Air it in a shaded, well-ventilated place if the label permits airing.
- Clean it again only if the label requires or allows the chosen method.
- Reshape and dry flat after any permitted washing before wearing or restacking.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
| Mistake | Why it damages shape | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Washing by fiber name alone | Construction, blends and finishes can require different treatment. | Follow the individual care claim. |
| Using a hot or vigorous cycle | Heat and mechanical action can shrink, felt or distort a knit. | Use the label’s temperature and approved cycle. |
| Wringing a hand-washed sweater | Twisting places uneven tension on loops and seams. | Press water out with open hands or towels. |
| Picking up a wet sweater by the neckline | The saturated body pulls downward from one small area. | Support the entire garment with a towel or both hands. |
| Drying on a hanger or line | Moisture weight lengthens the knit and can create shoulder humps. | Dry flat and reshape while damp. |
| Putting a forbidden garment in a dryer | Heat and tumbling can permanently change dimensions and texture. | Tumble dry only when the exact label permits it. |
| Storing knits on hangers | Long-term suspension can distort shoulders and necklines. | Fold knitwear and place it in a drawer or loose stack. |
| Putting moth repellent directly on wool | Concentrated product can contact and mark fibers. | Keep repellent separate from the garment as directed by Woolmark. |
A practical decision checklist
- Before washing: Is the item dry-clean-only, hand-wash, machine-wash or otherwise restricted?
- During washing: Am I using the permitted temperature, detergent and mechanical treatment?
- When lifting: Is the whole wet garment supported rather than hanging from one edge?
- During drying: Does the label allow a dryer, or should the sweater be laid flat and reshaped?
- Before storage: Is it fully dry, free of accessories and folded rather than hung?
- For wool storage: Is moth protection kept off the garment?
Following that sequence preserves the garment’s designed dimensions without relying on a universal “wool setting” or a one-size-fits-all product. The label determines what treatment is allowed; gentle support, flat drying and folded storage prevent the wet knit from being pulled out of shape.
