Fold clean, fully dry sweaters for storage; for wool, sealed storage can also help keep moths out.
Start with the care label and fiber
Do not assume that every sweater can be washed the same way—or that every wool sweater can go in a washing machine. Follow the garment’s care instructions for washing and drying. A hand-wash or dry-clean-only instruction is not interchangeable with a machine-wash setting. Check the fiber content as well as the care symbols or wording. Woolmark’s recommendations below apply to wool garments, not automatically to cotton, acrylic, cashmere blends or every knit. If the label’s instructions differ from general advice, follow the label.

Wash the sweater using the method its label allows
For machine-washable wool
Turn the sweater inside out, or place it in a fine-mesh laundry bag if you have one. Use a mild, neutral detergent—Woolmark prefers a Woolmark-approved detergent—and select the wool cycle. If the machine has no wool setting, use cold water or a delicates cycle, as Woolmark advises in its wool sweater washing instructions. A laundry bag is optional, not a substitute for a label that permits machine washing.

For hand-wash-only wool
Woolmark’s hand-washing guidance is to turn the garment inside out, soak it in clean lukewarm water with mild detergent for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly—first in lukewarm water and then in cold water. Handle the sweater gently throughout. Do not rub, twist or wring it; rough handling can distort a wet knit.
Decide when washing is needed
There is no universal wash schedule for sweaters. Woolmark notes that wool resists odor, stains and creasing naturally and may need less frequent washing. Let wear, visible soil, odor and the label guide the decision rather than washing after every use.

Reshape and dry it flat
After washing, support the sweater’s weight instead of hanging it while wet. Woolmark recommends laying knitwear flat in the shade, on a clean pale or white towel, and gently shaping it to its usual dimensions. A flat mesh drying screen is another option, but not essential. Hanging or line-drying wet knitwear can stretch it out of shape.
Keep wool away from direct sunlight and direct heat, including radiators. Woolmark’s guidance is: “After washing your wool sweater, it is recommended the sweater is carefully dried flat, unless your sweater’s care claim states it can be tumble dried.” Some wool garments may be tumble-dried if their care claim permits it; use the low-heat or wool/delicates setting specified by the garment’s instructions. Fold sweaters for storage
Fold sweaters for everyday storage and when putting them away for the season. Hanging can stretch knitwear, especially heavier sweaters. Before long-term storage, make sure each garment is clean and fully dry. The American Cleaning Institute’s sweater-care advice notes that some soils attract insects and that stains left hidden can darken over time.

Food stains and body oils can attract moths to wool, so store clean garments. Woolmark recommends airtight bags or containers for long-term wool storage; Penn State Extension also advises cleaning infested textiles and storing them in airtight containers or bags to help exclude clothes moths. Moths feed on animal-derived materials, including wool. See Woolmark’s wool-care guidance and Penn State Extension’s clothes moth guidance (updated May 12, 2026). Do not put moth repellent directly on garments.

Sealing is a moth-barrier option for wool, not a requirement for every sweater or storage situation. The American Cleaning Institute recommends a cool, dark, dry, well-ventilated storage area and cautions that plastic bags or bins can trap moisture. Store only fully dry garments, and keep the storage location clean and dry; choose airtight storage when moth exclusion is the priority.

A quick routine before putting fall sweaters away
- Read each sweater’s care label and check its fiber content.
- Wash only when needed, using the method and temperature the label permits.
- Reshape wet knitwear and dry it flat away from direct heat and sunlight, unless its care claim permits a different method.
- Confirm each sweater is clean and completely dry before storage.
- Fold sweaters; for wool that needs moth protection, consider a clean airtight bag or container in a dry storage area.
