For the current Owlet Dream Sock, turn off the sensor and remove it from the fabric sock. Keep the sensor out of soaking water: gently brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a little diluted mild laundry detergent, then rinse the brush and brush away residue. Wash only the fabric sock in the solution. Let both pieces dry completely before using them. The method depends on the model: Owlet says the Smart Sock 2 sensor is not washable.
Check which Owlet model you have
Do not apply one generation’s cleaning instructions to another. Owlet’s Smart Sock 3 FAQ distinguishes the Smart Sock 2 sensor, which Owlet says is not washable, from the Smart Sock 3 sensor and fabric sock, which can be washed according to that model’s instructions. The current Dream Sock washing guide gives a separate procedure: brush-clean its sensor without submerging it, and wash the fabric sock.

If you have an older model or are unsure which instructions apply, check the model name and use its own Owlet guide. An older official product manual describes a different sensor-cleaning method, so do not combine that procedure with the current Dream Sock instructions.

What you need for a Dream Sock
- Mild laundry detergent, preferably the same mild detergent you use for the baby’s clothes.
- A clean, soft-bristled toothbrush.
- A clean, dry towel.
- A sink or basin and cool-to-lukewarm water.
Owlet advises against hand soap, antibacterial soap, and dish soap for this cleaning procedure. Its current guide says these can be too drying or irritating with prolonged contact against a child’s skin. Use only a small amount of detergent and rinse it away thoroughly.

How to clean a Dream Sock sensor and fabric sock
- Prepare the wash water. Mix a small amount of mild laundry detergent into cool-to-lukewarm water in a clean sink or basin.
- Turn off and separate the sensor. Follow the instructions for your Dream Sock to turn off the sensor, then remove it from the fabric sock. Confirm that the sensor light is off before cleaning.
- Keep the sensor out of the basin. Submerge only the fabric sock in the detergent solution. Do not submerge the sensor.
- Brush the sensor gently. Dip the toothbrush bristles in the solution and tap off excess water. Brush the sensor gently in a circular motion. Rinse the toothbrush under running water, tap off excess, and brush the sensor again to remove detergent. Repeat as needed, rinsing the brush frequently, until dirt, oils, and detergent residue are gone.
- Dry the sensor fully. Press it gently into a dry towel to absorb moisture, then lay it on the towel to air-dry completely. Do not place a wet sensor on the Base Station, use it damp on your baby, or dry it with direct sunlight or heat.
- Wash and rinse the fabric sock. Gently wash the sock in the detergent solution, then rinse it under running water until all soap is removed. Blot it with a towel and lay it flat or hang it to dry completely.
- Wait before using it again. Use the sensor and sock only when both are completely dry.
These steps follow Owlet’s Dream Sock washing instructions.
How often to wash it, and when to replace parts
Owlet recommends washing the Dream Sock sensor and fabric at least every two weeks. Its guide says dirt, oils, and bacteria buildup, harsh or drying soap, and soap left on the parts after washing can contribute to irritation under the sensor. Thorough rinsing matters; this is a manufacturer care recommendation, not a measured health outcome.

Replace the sock or sensor if the sock has stretched or is separating, the fabric or sensor windows are ripped, warped, or otherwise damaged, or the hook-and-loop fastener no longer latches properly. Owlet also advises replacement if multiple cleanings do not remove visible stains or dirt. See the Dream Sock washing guide for the listed wear and replacement conditions. Owlet’s approximately 2023 official product manual describes washing a sensor under running water and mentions an optional shutoff. That guidance differs from the current Dream Sock guide, which says not to submerge the sensor and specifies brushing it clean. Because instructions vary by generation, use the manual or support article for your exact product rather than mixing methods. Owlet’s general sock-care page also recommends hand washing and complete drying, but the Dream Sock guide provides the detailed sensor procedure above.
