How to walk uphill on a steep trail
Choose a pace that lets you check where each foot will land. Shorter steps make it easier to place your feet carefully and adjust when the ground shifts.

A National Park Service field-monitoring protocol suggests leaning slightly forward, turning the feet outward, and using as much of the inside of the foot as possible on uphill or sandy ground. That is context-specific field guidance, not a rule for every slope or surface; prioritize stable footing and a posture that feels controlled. National Park Service field-monitoring protocol

How to walk downhill without slipping
Slow your pace and shorten your stride so you can test each foothold before committing your weight. Walk, rather than run: the NPS field protocol says, “Walk – never run down slopes.” On slippery or loose ground, that same protocol recommends bent knees, a slight backward lean, and keeping most of your weight on your heels. Treat these as recommendations for the described field conditions, not a universal posture for every descent. National Park Service field-monitoring protocol

- Quick Lock Mechanism - Designed with rugged terrain in mind. Easily adjust your trekking poles from 26”- 54” without breaking your stride.
- Cork Grip with Extended EVA Down Grip - Ergonomic cork grip helps reduce vibration from uneven terrain. Extended EVA down grip provides additional hand placement options for steep climbs and varied trail conditions.
- All-Terrain Accessories - Includes tungsten carbide tips for year-round use, plus rubber snow and mud baskets, boots, and tip covers designed for different trail conditions.
- Portable Design - Lightweight poles collapse for easy storage in a hiking pack or backpack and include a travel bag for transport on day hikes, backpacking trips, or long-distance treks.
When traversing a steep area, look at the terrain ahead and consider where you could land if you lost your footing. Keep a hand free on rocky slopes when it could help you use a solid handhold. Avoid grabbing loose rocks or vegetation that may give way.
What to do on loose or unstable terrain
Check each foothold and move deliberately. If trees or solid rocks offer safe handholds, use them where appropriate; do not rely on a hold you have not assessed. NPS backcountry guidance advises avoiding known hazards and choosing a safer route or aborting when conditions are too dangerous. Do not continue onto a slope that is beyond your ability simply because you have poles or suitable footwear. National Park Service backcountry safety guidance

Can trekking poles help you keep your balance?
Trekking poles are optional. NPS backcountry guidance mentions poles as an aid to stability and balance in some settings, but does not establish that they prevent falls or make hazardous ground safe. Use them only if they help you move in control, and keep your hands available for secure handholds when the terrain calls for it. National Park Service backcountry safety guidance
Footwear and trail conditions
Mount Rainier National Park recommends sturdy footwear with non-slip tread and ankle support. This is park-specific guidance, not a guarantee against slipping or injury; footwear should suit the trail and your needs. Check local trail signs and current conditions, and do not treat boots or poles as a substitute for choosing a safe route. Mount Rainier National Park hiking safety

Passing other hikers and pack stock
NPS general trail-etiquette guidance gives uphill hikers the right of way, but local signs and rules may differ. When yielding to pack stock, it advises stepping calmly off the trail to the downhill side. Stay on the trail unless stepping aside is necessary to yield. National Park Service hiking etiquette
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to change your route or turn back
Reassess as conditions change. If a section is unstable, exposed, or beyond your skill, choose a safer route or turn back rather than trying to force your way through. Mount Rainier National Park specifically advises against attempting stream crossings that appear unsafe or exceed your skill level; the same safety-first judgment matters when deciding whether to continue on steep ground.
