Wake and restart are different operations. Wake-on-LAN (WoL) can bring a compatible laptop out of sleep, hibernation, or sometimes shutdown by sending a network “magic packet.” It cannot restart an operating system that is already running. A restart requires an authenticated remote-management channel, such as PowerShell remoting, and the laptop must still be powered on and reachable.
For dependable unattended access, verify support on the exact laptop model, use wired Ethernet and AC power when the documentation requires them, test from the precise state in which the laptop will be left, and arrange a secure way to deliver the packet to its local network. A laptop can power on successfully yet remain inaccessible if firmware passwords, disk-encryption prompts, or a remote-access agent that does not start automatically blocks the boot process.

Choose the method by the laptop’s current state
Start by identifying whether the laptop is running, sleeping, hibernating, shut down, or merely unreachable. The correct method depends on that state, the network path, and hardware support.
| Current state | What can work | What must already be configured | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Running and reachable | Authenticated remote restart | Remote-management service, valid credentials, and permission to restart | A restart command is an operating-system action, not a wake packet. |
| Sleep | Wake-on-LAN, where firmware and the network adapter support it | WoL enabled in firmware and the operating system; suitable network connection; power available | Support varies by laptop model and interface. |
| Hibernate | WoL only if the specific laptop and adapter support wake from hibernation | The same hardware and network checks as sleep, tested from hibernation | Do not assume that sleep support also covers hibernation. |
| Shut down | Model-specific WoL, Wake-on-Power, or a tested power-restoration setting | Explicit firmware, adapter, and power support | Shutdown wake is less dependable than sleep wake. |
| Outside the local network | Router-delivered WoL or an always-on relay on the target LAN | A controlled, authenticated path into the local network | A public IP address alone cannot deliver a packet to a powered-off laptop. |
The distinction is documented in setup guidance from TP-Link, Getscreen, and TeamViewer.

Check hardware, firmware, and power before configuring anything
WoL is not a software feature that can be added to unsupported hardware. The mainboard firmware and the network adapter must both implement the required wake behavior. TP-Link specifically lists support from the mainboard and wired adapter as prerequisites. ASUS notes that its documented UEFI setting can be absent on models that do not support the feature; its instructions are therefore model-dependent rather than universal.
Look up the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and answer these questions:
- Does the firmware expose Wake-on-LAN, wake from sleep, wake from hibernation, or wake after shutdown?
- Is support limited to the built-in Ethernet controller, or does the laptop support wake over Wi-Fi?
- Must the laptop remain connected to AC power?
- Does a USB-C Ethernet adapter or docking station retain standby power and pass the wake signal?
- Is a special dock or firmware utility required?
Ethernet and continuous power are common requirements in the cited guidance. A USB-C Ethernet adapter can solve a missing physical port only when the laptop, adapter, firmware, and operating-system driver cooperate; buying an adapter does not create WoL support.
Configure Wake-on-LAN on the laptop
1. Enable the firmware option
- Shut down or restart the laptop and enter its UEFI/BIOS setup using the manufacturer’s documented key or procedure.
- Search the power-management, advanced, or onboard-device menus for a setting named Wake-on-LAN, PCIe wake, Power on by network, or a similar model-specific label.
- Enable the setting only if the manufacturer documents it for your model and intended power state. Some options wake from sleep but not from a complete shutdown.
- Save the firmware change and boot the operating system.
Do not infer support from another laptop in the same product family. ASUS’s instructions explicitly depend on the model, and unsupported systems may not show the setting at all: ASUS support guidance.

2. Enable the network adapter’s wake features
In the operating system, open the properties for the network adapter that will receive the packet. Look for power-management controls that allow the device to wake the computer and for a Wake on Magic Packet or equivalent network option. Names and locations differ by operating-system version and driver.
Use the adapter that will remain connected while the laptop is unattended. If you configure the built-in Ethernet controller but later disconnect it and rely on Wi-Fi, the test no longer represents the planned setup. Wi-Fi wake is not guaranteed merely because wired WoL works.
3. Put the laptop in the intended power condition
Connect AC power if the model’s documentation requires it, connect the Ethernet cable, and disable settings that remove standby power from the adapter. Then test each state separately:
- Put the laptop to sleep and send a wake packet.
- If supported, repeat from hibernation.
- Only after those tests pass, test a complete shutdown.
A laptop that wakes from sleep may still refuse a packet after shutdown. Getscreen’s guidance emphasizes testing from the exact state in which the computer will be left: waking a powered-off computer.

Provide a reliable path for the wake packet
When you are on the same LAN
A device on the same local network can send the magic packet to the laptop’s network interface. Record the laptop’s hardware address and the local network details used by the WoL utility or router. Keep the sender on a trusted network and verify that the laptop’s switch or access point continues supplying standby connectivity.
When you are away from home or the office
WoL is fundamentally a local-network operation. From the internet, use one of two controlled designs:
- Router-delivered wake: use a router that has a documented WoL function and configure it to send the packet to the correct device on the LAN.
- Always-on relay: leave a trusted computer or other always-on device on the target LAN and have it send the packet locally after receiving an authenticated request.
Some vendor documentation describes public-address configuration with port forwarding, but exposing a network service increases the attack surface. Prefer a VPN, a router feature with authentication, or a relay that is restricted to trusted administrators. Do not treat a public IP as proof that a powered-off laptop can receive traffic. The router or relay must know how to deliver the packet inside the LAN. See the network-path explanations from TeamViewer and Getscreen.

Remove unattended-boot blockers
- A firmware password can stop the boot sequence before the operating system loads.
- Full-disk encryption may require a local unlock prompt after power-on.
- A boot-menu choice, recovery screen, or pending firmware update can wait for keyboard input.
- A remote-control agent that launches only after a user signs in will not be available for a headless session.
Test a complete unattended cycle: leave the laptop in its planned state, wake it from another network, wait for the documented boot time, and verify that the remote agent reconnects without a person at the keyboard. Getscreen identifies encryption unlock prompts and other pre-boot gates as reasons a powered-on machine may still be unreachable: its wake guide.
Restart a laptop that is already running
If the laptop is on and reachable, use an authenticated administrative channel that is already enabled. On Windows, Microsoft documents Restart-Computer for local and remote operating systems. A typical PowerShell pattern is:
Restart-Computer -ComputerName 'LAPTOP' -Credential (Get-Credential)
The remote operation depends on the remoting path, credentials, firewall policy, and account permissions. Microsoft’s remote-command documentation explains how to establish and use that channel: Running remote commands. The restart cmdlet reference is at Restart-Computer.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a restart command only while the machine is running and reachable. An SSH or RDP client cannot connect to a laptop that is already powered off, and neither protocol can substitute for WoL. If the command succeeds but the laptop does not return, troubleshoot boot blockers and network reconnection rather than repeatedly issuing restart commands.

Shutdown wake, Wake-on-Power, and special hardware
Waking from a complete shutdown requires explicit support and a test from that state. Some systems remove power from the network adapter when shut down, making a magic packet ineffective. Others expose a separate power-recovery feature.
Supported Surface models
Microsoft documents Wake-on-Power for listed Surface devices. When configured through the supported Surface UEFI tools, compatible devices can automatically start when they are reconnected to power. Microsoft describes the purpose this way: “To improve the manageability of these devices, Wake-on-Power enables compatible Surface devices to automatically start when they’re reconnected to power.” Read the model list and configuration requirements at Wake-on-Power for Surface.
Surface Dock 2 also has a distinct wired WoL path for listed Surface hardware when AC power and the supported dock connection are present: Wake on LAN with Surface Dock 2. Neither feature generalizes to every Surface device or laptop. Confirm the exact model, dock, firmware, and power conditions before relying on it.
Why a smart plug is usually the wrong first choice
A smart plug switches external electrical power; it does not send a WoL packet or control the operating system. It can start a laptop only when all of the following are true:
- The firmware is configured to boot automatically when AC power is restored.
- The laptop actually loses and then receives external power when the plug changes state.
- The internal battery does not keep the laptop running through the power interruption.
- The machine can boot unattended and reconnect its remote-access agent.
Battery behavior makes this approach unpredictable on laptops. A battery may continue powering the computer when the plug is turned off, so restoring the plug does not create the edge from “no power” to “AC restored” that the firmware is waiting for. The cited guidance presents smart plugs as primarily suitable for desktops and mini PCs, with laptop battery and firmware behavior requiring separate testing: Getscreen’s guide. Treat a smart plug as a conditional workaround, not a universal remote-wake method.
Troubleshoot a failed wake attempt
The laptop shows no sign of receiving the packet
- Confirm that the Ethernet cable is connected to the adapter configured for WoL.
- Check that AC power is attached if the model requires it.
- Verify that the firmware option and operating-system adapter settings survived a reboot.
- Send the packet while the laptop is in the same state used during testing; do not compare sleep results with shutdown expectations.
- Check whether a USB-C adapter, dock, switch, or access point removes standby power.
It wakes on the local LAN but not from outside
- Confirm that the router or relay is on the same local network as the laptop.
- Verify that the remote request is authenticated and that the relay is allowed to send the packet.
- Do not assume the public IP points directly to a powered-off machine; the LAN delivery step still has to occur.
- Check whether the internet connection changes its public address and whether the router’s WoL feature supports the required configuration.
The laptop powers on but remote control never returns
- Wait for the operating system to finish booting and reconnect to the network.
- Look for an encryption, firmware-password, recovery, or boot-selection prompt.
- Confirm that the remote-access agent is configured to start before user sign-in.
- Check whether the machine changed network interfaces or received a different address after boot.
Restart works once but not reliably
- Check that the remote-management service remains enabled after startup.
- Confirm that the account still has permission to restart the computer.
- Allow enough time for shutdown and boot before attempting a second connection.
- Inspect whether updates, encryption prompts, or firmware changes are interrupting unattended startup.
A safe unattended-access checklist
- Write down the exact laptop model, firmware version, network adapter, dock or adapter, and operating-system edition.
- Read the manufacturer’s support page and verify WoL or power-on support for the intended state.
- Enable the documented firmware and adapter settings.
- Connect Ethernet and AC power when required; do not assume Wi-Fi or battery-only operation is supported.
- Configure a local-LAN wake test and record the result separately for sleep, hibernation, and shutdown.
- For off-site access, choose an authenticated router function or a trusted always-on relay instead of exposing arbitrary services.
- Configure the remote-access agent to start automatically and test boot without local input.
- Check for firmware passwords and disk-unlock prompts that would stop a headless boot.
- From outside the LAN, wake the laptop, wait for boot, and verify remote control before leaving it unattended.
- Keep a physical recovery plan, because unsupported shutdown wake or a failed network path can require someone at the laptop.
What to expect in practice
The most dependable general pattern is a laptop connected to AC and wired Ethernet, with WoL enabled in firmware and the operating system, a wake packet delivered by a trusted local relay or supported router, and a remote-access service that launches automatically after boot. A remote restart is simpler once the machine is already reachable: issue the authenticated operating-system command, wait for the reboot, and reconnect.
There is no universal setting that makes every headless laptop wake from every power state. Sleep, hibernation, and shutdown are separate tests; Wi-Fi, USB-C adapters, docks, batteries, and encryption prompts introduce additional variables. Validate the complete path on the exact device before depending on it for unattended work.
