A page navigation finishing does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven changes are complete.
Why an element can still be loading after navigation
Selenium navigation waits for a configured document readyState; the documented default is complete. That describes the document and its HTML-defined assets, but JavaScript can continue adding elements or changing their visibility after navigation returns. Selenium’s Waiting Strategies guide recommends waiting for the particular application state needed before the next command.
Wait for the state you need
An explicit wait polls a condition until it succeeds or the timeout expires. It is targeted to a step, and continues as soon as the condition is met. Choose the narrowest useful condition rather than waiting for a fixed amount of time.
Python example: wait until an element is visible
The following uses Selenium’s documented Python expected-condition pattern. The 10-second timeout is an illustrative value, not a universal recommendation; choose a timeout appropriate to the application and execution environment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

# The element is now visible; continue with the action that needs it.
Selenium’s official example uses a two-second demonstration timeout and waits for visibility of an element located by ID. Adapt both the locator and duration to your page. See Waiting with Expected Conditions for the documented condition examples. Binding APIs can differ; that page notes that .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4, so verify the syntax for your language and version.
Choose the right expected condition
| Condition | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Presence | The element needs to exist in the DOM, but visibility is not yet required. |
| Visibility | The element may already exist but must be displayed before the next step. |
| Text present | A particular text value signals that content has updated. |
| Staleness | An old element reference should become detached during a page or component update. |
| Clickable | The next step is a click and the binding provides an appropriate clickable condition. A wait cannot fix an incorrect locator or an application failure. |
These are documented expected-condition use cases. The condition should express what must be true for the next command, not merely that some time has passed.

Explicit wait, implicit wait, or sleep?
| Method | What it waits for | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit wait | A supplied condition becomes true. | Applies to the step where it is used; proceeds when the condition succeeds, or times out. |
| Implicit wait | An element can be located. | Global setting for element-location calls. It does not establish visibility or another readiness condition. Selenium documents its default as zero. |
| Fixed sleep | A fixed duration passes. | Can waste time when the page is ready sooner and still be too short when it is slower. |
Do not combine implicit and explicit waits. Selenium warns that doing so can produce unpredictable total wait times: its example combines a 10-second implicit wait with a 15-second explicit wait and shows a timeout after 20 seconds. That is an illustration of the interaction, not a recommended configuration.
Troubleshoot a wait that times out
A timeout means the specified condition did not become true before the deadline. It does not, by itself, show that the page only needs a longer timeout. Check these likely causes:

- Locator mismatch: confirm the locator matches the element in the current page state.
- Wrong condition: presence can succeed for a hidden element; use visibility when the next action requires it to be displayed.
- Context changed: check whether the element is inside a frame or whether the page opened a different window.
- Element replacement: a component update may detach the old reference; wait for the relevant update or staleness before locating the replacement.
- Application did not reach the expected state: inspect the page and the expected signal rather than extending the timeout without evidence.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a page screenshot rather than interact with it through Selenium, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API: one GET request can return an image or PDF. This does not replace Selenium when your task requires browser interactions or application-specific waits. The API can accept a consent banner and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing. Each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
Example cURL request (replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
