There is no universal browser event that means every website has finished rendering. Choose a navigation milestone, then wait for the specific page content or state your screenshot needs—usually by asserting that a target element is visible or has the expected value. In Playwright, this app-specific wait is more reliable than an arbitrary sleep or networkidle.
Why page-load events do not guarantee a finished screenshot
Modern pages can continue changing after the browser has reached a navigation milestone. A document may load while client-side code is still fetching data, rendering a chart, revealing a modal, or updating an element. “Finished rendering” therefore depends on what the screenshot is meant to show.

| Signal | What it tells you | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
commit |
A response arrived and document loading began. | That the document, application, or target content has finished loading. |
domcontentloaded |
The DOMContentLoaded event fired. | That later assets or application updates are complete. |
load |
The page load event fired. | That client-side rendering or delayed content has settled. |
networkidle |
Playwright observes no network connections for at least 500 ms. | That the desired visual state is ready; network quiet and application readiness are different conditions. |
Playwright’s current Page API documentation explicitly discourages using networkidle for tests and recommends web assertions to assess readiness. Treat navigation waits as milestones, then wait for the state that matters.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wait for the content your screenshot must show
In Playwright, use a locator assertion or another web-first assertion after navigation. Assertions retry while the condition is not met, so the wait is tied to the target rather than a guessed number of milliseconds.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('capture the rendered report', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const report = page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Monthly report' });
await expect(report).toBeVisible();
await expect(page.getByTestId('report-status')).toHaveText('Ready');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png', fullPage: true });
});
Replace the example URL, heading, and status selector with signals that represent the image you need. If the target is a chart, wait for its rendered container or a meaningful ready state; if the page updates a status label after data arrives, assert its expected text. Waiting for an element to exist is not always enough: choose a condition that reflects usability or the final content, such as visibility and expected text.
For simple captures outside Playwright Test, the same principle applies: navigate, then wait for a locator or condition that represents the desired state before calling the screenshot method. Playwright also automatically waits for element readiness before actions, but screenshot timing still needs to reflect the page-specific visual goal.

Choose a navigation milestone, then an application wait
Use the earliest milestone that lets you begin checking the relevant target. domcontentloaded is often a practical starting point when the target is rendered by application code after the initial document; load may be appropriate when the next step depends on load-event assets. Neither is a substitute for checking the actual target. Playwright supports commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle as navigation wait options.
Do not add a fixed delay as the primary readiness strategy. A delay can waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slower ones. Use one only when a known page behavior has no observable signal, and prefer adding or identifying a meaningful readiness condition where possible.

When the screenshot is a visual regression assertion
For screenshot comparisons in Playwright Test, toHaveScreenshot waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last image with the expectation. This is a visual-stability check for that assertion workflow, not a general semantic detector that proves every page has finished rendering. See the current Playwright PageAssertions documentation.
Animations can make otherwise equivalent captures differ. The screenshot assertion option animations: 'disabled' disables CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations during capture. Finite animations are fast-forwarded; infinite animations are canceled and then resumed. Use it for visual tests when a settled image is the goal, bearing in mind that it changes animation behavior for the capture.

How Selenium waits differ
Selenium navigation commands wait for a readyState determined by the page-load strategy, which defaults to complete. The Selenium Project’s Waiting Strategies documentation cautions that readyState concerns assets defined in the HTML; JavaScript may still change the page afterward. Add an explicit wait for the element or condition your screenshot requires instead of treating navigation completion as application readiness.

- The target is missing even after navigation: Wait for the target locator or expected state after the navigation call. Confirm the page actually contains the selector and that the script is on the intended route.
networkidlenever arrives: A page may keep connections open or continue making requests. Since network quiet is not a universal readiness signal, replace it with an assertion on the content the screenshot needs.- The target exists but is not visible: Assert visibility, not just presence. If it appears only after interaction or data loading, wait for the resulting visible state.
- The screenshot varies between test runs: Check for ongoing animations or transitions. In Playwright Test screenshot assertions, consider
animations: 'disabled'when the intended comparison is a settled frame. - A Selenium screenshot follows a completed navigation but shows stale content: Add an explicit wait for the relevant element or condition; the navigation
readyStatedoes not establish that JavaScript-driven updates are done.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-request capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its API removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
Install the Python dependency with pip install requests, then run this complete example (replace the URL as needed). See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
