Use page.waitForSelector() for an element, page.waitForFunction() for a custom condition in the page, and browserContext.waitForTarget() for a popup or other browser target. If you are about to interact with an element, a locator is often simpler because Puppeteer waits for the action’s preconditions.
Choose the wait that matches what you mean by “target”
| What you are waiting for | Use | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| A DOM element | page.waitForSelector() |
Wait for an element to exist, become visible, or become hidden or absent. |
| A condition in the page | page.waitForFunction() |
Wait for a custom predicate, such as an application state or selector-derived condition. |
| A popup or browser target | browserContext.waitForTarget() |
Wait for a browser Target matching a predicate, such as a specific URL. |
| An element you will act on | page.locator() |
Use for actions such as clicking or filling when you do not need a lower-level element handle. |
Wait for a DOM element with waitForSelector()
page.waitForSelector() resolves immediately if the selector already matches; otherwise, it waits for the element to be added. The documented default timeout is 30,000 milliseconds. Set a shorter timeout for a bounded wait, or set timeout: 0 to disable the timeout. You can also change the default with Page.setDefaultTimeout().

const button = await page.waitForSelector('button.submit', {
visible: true,
timeout: 10_000,
});
if (button) {
try {
await button.click();
} finally {
await button.dispose();
}
}
With visible: true, the element must be present and not hidden by display: none or visibility: hidden. With hidden: true, the wait resolves when the element is hidden or absent; if it is not in the DOM, the result is null. A signal option can cancel the wait. See Puppeteer’s Page.waitForSelector() documentation and WaitForSelectorOptions reference for the installed release’s option details.
When you need an element handle
waitForSelector() returns an ElementHandle when it finds an element. Dispose of the handle when you are finished with it, particularly in longer-running scripts. If your goal is simply to click or fill an element, consider a locator instead.

Wait for a custom page condition with waitForFunction()
Use page.waitForFunction() when readiness means more than the presence of one element. Puppeteer evaluates the supplied function in the page context until it returns a truthy value. Pass values from Node.js as arguments after the options object.
await page.waitForFunction(
selector => Boolean(document.querySelector(selector)),
{},
'.results-loaded',
);
The example waits until the page contains an element matching .results-loaded. The predicate runs in the browser page context, so it can inspect the page’s DOM and state. Consult the Page.waitForFunction() documentation for the API details in your Puppeteer version.

Wait for a popup or browser Target
A Puppeteer Target is a browser-level object, not a DOM element. For a new page opened by an action such as window.open, register browserContext.waitForTarget() before performing the action. Match a property that identifies the target, such as its URL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
const targetPromise = page.browserContext().waitForTarget(
target => target.url() === 'https://example.com/report',
);
await page.click('a.open-report');
const target = await targetPromise;
const popup = await target.page();
if (!popup) {
throw new Error('The matching target is not a page');
}
Setting up the wait first means it is already listening when the click opens the popup. The URL predicate should be specific enough to distinguish the intended target. The BrowserContext.waitForTarget() documentation describes the predicate-based wait.

Prefer a locator when the next step is an interaction
Puppeteer documents locators as its recommended approach for element interaction. A locator automatically waits for the element’s presence and action preconditions, so a separate selector wait is often unnecessary for a click.
await page.locator('button.submit').click();
Use a lower-level wait such as waitForSelector() when you need to inspect or retain an element handle, or when the condition you need is specifically presence, visibility, or hidden state. See Puppeteer’s page interaction guide.

Navigation, timeouts, and choosing a reliable wait
When navigation may replace the document
A page- or frame-level waitForSelector() is the safer choice if navigation can replace the document or its elements: Puppeteer documents Frame.waitForSelector() as working across navigations. By contrast, ElementHandle.waitForSelector() is scoped to the current element and does not work across navigation or after that element is detached. See the Frame.waitForSelector() documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrefer observable conditions to fixed sleeps
When an observable condition is available, wait for it directly: a selector, a truthy page predicate, or a matching browser target ties the wait to the outcome you need. A fixed delay only establishes that time passed; it does not establish that the page became ready.

Check documentation for your installed version
Puppeteer’s API details and defaults can vary by release. Check the version installed in your project and use its matching documentation before copying an example. The documentation pages cited here displayed version labels 25.12.0 for the Page wait APIs, 25.9.0 for BrowserContext.waitForTarget(), and 25.10.0 for Frame.waitForSelector() when consulted; those labels identify the documentation pages, not a claim about the latest npm release.
Troubleshooting common wait failures
waitForSelector()times out: Check that the selector matches the actual page, that the expected navigation or UI action happened, and that the element is not inside a different frame. If visibility is required, verify that the element is not hidden. Increase the timeout only if the page legitimately needs longer; do not disable it without a reason.- A hidden-state wait never resolves: Confirm that the page actually removes or hides the element. With
hidden: true, absence is already a successful result, so a still-visible match usually means the application has not reached the expected state. - A popup wait appears stuck: Start
waitForTarget()before clicking, and make sure the predicate matches the popup’s real URL. A mismatch means the target can open without satisfying your predicate. - An element handle becomes detached: Navigation or page updates can invalidate an element-specific handle. Wait from the page or frame level when navigation may occur, or locate the element again after the update.
- A click fails after a successful selector wait: Presence does not necessarily mean the element is ready for interaction. Use a locator for the action so Puppeteer can wait for its interaction preconditions.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than automate its browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request example is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
